Is it an epidemic? Its four students in like four weeks. But how many teens commit suicide usually? Bullying is not an epidemic. Its the oldest form of dickery to exist.

I don't know. I think its good to call attention to it but the way its being handled kind of makes me sigh.

Bullying will never stop. As long as their are weak people there will be bullies.

How about teaching kids to toughen up? Yeah, I know. Its jerkish to say. But my mom always said if someone puts a hand on you, kick their ass.

They throw you into a locker. Pick up a lock and knock the shit out of them. Bet it won't happen anymore.

It is an epidemic. My mother worked with teens dealing with suicide. It's shocking how much have either killed themselves or tried. I've lost 3 or 4 friends who have killed themselves.

I do agree that bullying will never stop though. However, violence solves nothing. That's like saying it was okay for the Columbine killers to shoot up the school because they were bullied.

I'm not saying murder people. I'm saying protect yourself. Assert yourself. Dont' stab them and shoot them. But if they keep coming, you fight them with all you have. You should never let someone treat you like trash. Always fight them.

This no violence teaching is crazy and leads to people being weakened and treated like lambs to the slaughter.

There's nothing wrong with fighting off a bully. Holding it all in is the killer.

It's only an "epidemic" because it's becoming a trendy social issue for celebrities, and now special interest groups to latch on to.

Again, most of these people here miss the mark completely. Other than Muhney. Bullying is not something dependant on sexual orientation. The Phoebe Prince, Hope Witsell, and Megan Meiers of the world need the same attention and help given to them. Bullying is not a gay exclusive issue.

I agree with you Drew. This is a people issue not solely an issue based on what kind of person one is attracted to romantically.

It had been a wonderful evening and what I needed now, to give it the perfect ending, was a little of the Ludwig Van.

There are zero-tolerance policies in regards to violence enforced in most if not all schools. There should be a zero-tolerance policy for bullying as well.

Thanks for posting Casey.

ETA: I, too, believe that bullying is an epidemic. Now there are many outlets in which the bullying can occur. Online social networking sites for example. It's just ugly.

It's hard though when most of these attacks are now occurring online.

The problem is a lot of people don't report because they have no proof. If someone says garbage about you and no one else is in earshot, it is their word against yours. Been through that nightmare, and not much you can do in those situations as if you tell you may end up with even a larger target on your back.

So everyone who is bullied is weak? Does that mean bullies are "strong" individuals? I would say that so long as certain children are dickheads, and certain adults (like their parents) excuse their behavior, there will be bullying.

And what happens when the "weak" kid "toughens up", kicks some ass, and goes to jail? Because that could definitely happen. As someone else pointed out, most school have a zero tolerance policy regarding violence. Society has changed, and beating someone up, even if they are bullying you, can have serious consequences.

Sadly, fighting back doesn't always work anyway. Yeah, you beat up the bully on Monday, if they're popular, they could just show up on Tuesday with several of their closest friends and beat the crap out of you in return. Violence isn't the solution. I don't think there is any simple solution, because you are right about one thing, there will always be creeps who feel the need to bully others.

Who's to say that they didn't fight them? Maybe they did fight and the jerks continue to bully them anyway. Why assume that the victim is some how to blame, that they allowed themselves to be bullied?

I can relate to what those poor kids are going through.I was targeted by bullies when I was growing up.I somehow survived it and I am now a much stronger person. These days I don't tolerate anyone treating me with disrespect.

I feel for the families who have lost children because they were bullied.

Bullying will never stop. It's a horrible endless cycle, and people are going to get hurt from it. People and schools can try all they want but as long as their has been people there has been bullying going on. It's not just something we can stop that easy, we don't live in Utopia. There are things we can do to try to help it, but it's not as affective. I've lost some very close friends to bullying and it's a horrible experience. I don't even want to go there.

I wouldn't call bullying an epidemic since it's been around forever, but gay suicide has been an epidemic for 30+ years, only now it the media picking up on it.

I'm not saying start a fight. I'm saying if someone puts their hands on you, you should make sure that person knows you won't stand for it. You might have to fight everyday of your life until you figure out a better solution, but its better than letting it build up and slitting your wrist.

Bullies tend to to pick on those who they deem weaker than them. If you let someone put their hands on you under the guise that youdon't want to get in trouble then you are giving away your power.

Yes, every action has a reaction. And you may suffer reprecutions for your actions. But being suspended is better than being abused. And some of the zero tollerence rules wouldn't hold up in court if someone sued on the grounds that they are asking me to go to a place everyday and get my ass kicked.

I understand not every instance of bullying deserves a reaction. But physcial attacks do. A person should never be too scared to protect themselves. You should respect yourself more.

And that's what we should be teaching kids respect for themselves and others. You don't bully. But respect yourself not to stand for anyone bullying you.

I agree that bullying should be addressed overall, not just because of sexual orientation. I remember hearing about one particular story about a girl who was involved with a guy and sent him some inappropriate pictues via text and when they broke up he forwarded them to all his "friends". It got all over school, kids were making fun of her and calling her names, etc and she committed suicide as a result. Broke my heart. Just as the story about the young man from Rutgers broke my heart. It's knowing that they must've felt so alone and totally humiliated and couldn't see a light at the end of the tunnel.

I also feel for their families. I had a close family member commit suicide and the pain that the family feels is indescribable. As if the pain of losing a loved one isn't enough, the constant questioning of yourself and what you could've done or what you should've seen can be unbearable.

My heart goes out to all those affected by this...

So everyone who is bullied is weak?
In terms of perceived norms, yes.

Quote:

Does that mean bullies are "strong" individuals?

No. They're looking for someone to have power over to fill their own insecurities.

Parenting is 90% of the problem.

I see two issues here that dovetail together.

The first is the lack of tolerance of homosexuality, or hell, anyone who is different that was is supposedly the norm.

The second is how extreme bullying has become. It always existed, but thanks to the internet (I won't get into parenting issues), it can be taken to an extreme and even provide the 'bullies' with a certain amount of automony and allow them to be true cowards by doing this all behind someone's back and not having to face up to it.
