I just read an article that said that there were 32 of our active service people committed suicide in June alone!! It's not just one segment of the population that this is affecting. Why didn't more people catch on that fact and start talking then? |

I agree with Aliaron, stick up for yourself and the bully will find a weaker target. Kids today are soft and pampered, they can't take it if someone picks on them. The schools don't help because now, we are so PC that you can't even have a normal schoolyard fight without getting arrested, having to go to anger management bs, and expelled. The online attacks are the simplest imo, to avoid, just don't go to the site or block the person so you can't read their crap. If your friends tell you what is being said about you, get new friends. |

That's easy to say, but when you have an entire online burn book dedicated to you, or pictures of yourself gone viral on the internet it's really another story. |

Your answer to this problem, violence, is why more than half of black population is locked up in prison. The "you touch me I'm going to kick your ass" shit is not the solution and mothers who teach that are not mothers at all in my opinion. There's a better word befitting of them and their actions that breed this hatred. |

:eyeroll: :eyeroll: :eyeroll: So whites, latinos, asians, and other races don't do the same thing? And no, half of the black population is not in prison. Edited by Rick, Oct 9 2010, 01:01 PM.

It happens in all races so don't fucking play a race baiting with me. But I can tell you this as a Black man who grew up in the hood, nearly every family had this front stating their baby would fight and beat the crap out of anyone for any reason for which they felt slighted. That's your ignorance. There are better solutions to resolving conflicts than fighting and killing like savages. Those are what good parents should be advocating for ALL kids of any race. |

No you are ignorant, half of the black population is not in prison. And not every black person results to violence. Maybe you did have to fight in the ghetto, but then again not every black person grew up in the ghetto and even if they did some have the sense to walk away from confrontation. |

I think we're talking apples and oranges! I don't mean someone should kill because someone looked at them wrong or other "slights"! On that, I agree with you! But fighting back against a person who is physically abusing you is a different kettle of fish(mixing metaphors)! I've seen people murdered for "mad dogging" or other bullshit! But the only way I got through childhood was fighting back and when it was someone bigger or more than one person, fighting dirty! |

There IS a disproportionate number of Black people behind bars! I am not Black, but I grew up in the ghetto and there are only so many times you can walk away! |

Not disagreeing with that, but the notion that half of the population which about 18-20 million is behind bars just sounded ignorant and ill conceived to me. Blacks are portrayed as violent and ghetto in the media, but that doesn't mean that is how it is in real life with every person of color. |

I'm so sick of seeing this phrase misused. Come on, Nelson, you're a friggin writer! It should have been "in light of," not "in lieu of." If he wanted to use "in lieu of" properly, he could have said, "In lieu of our usual Friday reporting of soap news, we have instead decided to dedicate our column to this growing epidemic and have asked several soapers to share their thoughts. |

Grandpa Hughes, you're correct. I didn't mean that half of the population as whole, but rather that more than half of the population that is incarcerated is Black. |

I'd say your attitude is part of the reason why these teens sit there quiet while they get jumped on and attacked at school. My mom raised five boys. She told them and me never to start a fight but never let someone disrespect you by laying a hand on you. None of them are in prison. All of them have an education. And all of them have respect for themselves. Respect. That's what you teach kids. Respect for others and respect for yourself. And you know what goes with that, you teach them that some things are worth fighting for. Like yourself. Words come and go. But bullies rarely stop at words. Is fighting the only answer? No. But removing it from the table is tying these kids' hands behind their back while they get pummeled by bullies. Edited by Aliaron, Oct 9 2010, 10:03 PM.
