With due respect to you, my attitude has nothing to do with these tragic situations.

I agree with you on the respect for oneself as well as that of others. Further, all of the great virtues such as treat others as you desire to be treated is great. I don't know how old you are, but I'm in my mid 50s and back in the early days (60s/70s) it was certainly a time where people would defend themselves when bullied, even if it led to a fight, because people would fight with their fists and then it would be over. However, kids of today are not into just fighting. It often turns tragic because they use knives and guns and other weapons (such as extreme social privacy invasions) which is simply not worth it in my opinion. There are countless families that experience this tragedy each and every year. And for those who just walk away and let the bullies continue to make their lives seemingly unbearable, its also tragic. I believe that parents need to teach the kids to respect each other, as we both agree, but also, they need to be taught to walk away and be safe. And SPEAK out! Don't sit back and suffer in silence. Speak up and speak out to the adults, to the parents, to whomever will listen. Children should be taught that it is okay to do so and to do so immediately so that the bullies can be dealt with. There are many other things that should be done, much more than I'd care to address here, but this is a start.

That all sounds pretty nice but it just doesn't work that way. Telling someone not to fight, just speak out is setting them up to have to wait for a hero instead of being their own hero.

I believe in both speaking out and standing up for yourself. Just walking away (like bullies can't follow you) and speaking out rarely stops things before they escalate. That's because adults rarely want to get involved. So they take their time doing it.

You ask any teen whose been bullied if they told anyone and you'll get a "yes, but" answer. Because while adults are trying to figure out how or if they should be involved, the kid is still getting attacked and abused while waiting.

Yes, kids should speak out, but if someone dares to put their hands on them (to push them into locker or throw them on the ground) that kid should not wait for a hero. They should fight.

You bring up the weapons now in schools. I believe one of the reasons kids have taken to weapons is because kids are lazy and we have made everything easy for them. That includes fighting.

Why learn how to use your fists when you can use a knife and do more damage and half the work? Our society no longer teaches the honor found in fighting on a level playing field and protecting yourself. We no longer teach the meaning behind "fighting fair."

That's why kids don't fistfight anymore. Because stringent rules and the passivity taught by so-called enlightened adults have raised kids that can't do anything for themselves. That includes fighting.
