wow...GH has had two awful weeks....losing a lot of viewers....and Days lost virtually the number they gained last week, that is why I would rather see very slow gains over a period of weeks than see 114K gain this week and then have to lose it the next. The demos are flat, very minimal gain in one after a loss last week and then the other one stays the same...I wonder how Kenny feels now being told that Safe would bring in the ratings...Ejami might not help, but neither does Safe (at least not the way they have been written). I have no hope for Jennifer's return taking these ratings up either. Hopefully they will try Ejole and see what happens, then they need to end the sarcophagus NOW, and keep writing Magstor the way they have, but I don't see November 'sweeps' helping them here at all. All soaps are bad and I seriously don't know if Days will be renewed, they simply don't have the time anymore to change things. |

The ABC soaps messed up by having the rerun on Wednesday. That was stupid on a number of levels. It destroyed the rest of the week and the momentum they had, especially OLTL. Not to mention that Thursday was the first week of sweeps so they wrecked their start of sweeps. Don't they have people to break down the ratings for them? If they insist on these reruns, they need to air them on Friday's, which tend to run the risk of being lower rated anyway. Days had it's highest number of viewers on Wednesday so the reruns on ABC may have helped it there. Despite losing viewers, the show held on to at least half of it's gain from the past two weeks and, thanks to GH crashing so hard on October, Days is now in 2nd in 18-49 and 18-34 and also .1 away from first in 18-34 which is key. The soaps are really crashing in 18-49 and 18-34 so that is what seems to be driving the poor ratings this year for soaps. I'm not sure what can be done to reverse this. Y&R had a tornado stunt that did nothing for it. GH brought VM back and has upped alot of it's stories over the summer and most of the Fall and still got nothing out of it. I think it's not so much about the actual numbers but how profitable the soaps remain. So, if a show like Days can be in the top 3 in 18-49 and 18-34 consistently (even if it's with a measely 1.0 or 0.8) it's something that can be sold to advertisers. However, I do think because the numbers continue to shrink that further budget cuts MAY be coming. Not just for Days but for all soaps. There is no way GH won't face big cuts given how it's crashed and Y&R is a just one crash away from facing some major cuts too. |

I think itīs clear the deteroriation of not just soap but daytime audience as whole has accelerated beyond point of no return. Forget about soaps, in a few years there will be no new programming (reality, talk, game shows) for this time slot because even people who are home are not bothering to turn the TVīs on. Those numbers are downright scarry and they are not some fluctuation, they are the new standart. As for DAYS, I already fully accepted next year renewal will be the last. Unless Comcast do something really drastic, like move the show to a different channel/timeslot it really cannot justified its existence anymore. I think the end of SoapNet in 2012 will also mean the end for most of the american soaps. |

I love that OLTL is the top rated ABC soap, it is disappointing how the repeats ruined its momentum. GH's numbers are downright scary. |

Considering the state of NBC, I do not see them cutting DAYS just yet from their programming lineup, the show is still making money for them and is managing to finish in the Top 2 and 3 in all demo categories. As long as the show remains competitive with the other soaps and stays away from last place, I think they will be fine. DAYS is also the most watched show on NBC online and that has to hold SOME weight. |

I agree. I think what we are seeing is that people just aren't there during the day anymore, unless they are forced to be by weather or whatever. Alos, I've noticed something over the years and this has been going on since 1999 when the soap ratings really began to drop. It always seems like Days is the first to crash and burn and then the others always end up following (with B&B and Y&R falling at a slower pace). For instance, Days had a major drop in 2000 that was scary and, when it stabilized, we soon saw the other soaps drop as well. Same happened in 2003 in the spring. Wwe also saw similar trends in 2005. In 2007, Days had that frightening drop in the first half of the year that it never really recovered from but the other soaps soon dropped below 2.0 (except for B&B and Y&R) as well. Days lost all of it's late 2008/2009 gain early this year but now we see other soaps crashing too. Days dropping always seems to be a sign that there is another major audience erosion coming for the soaps. I actually can see Days ending up on an NBC cable channel. I can see Comcast seeing some value in that and ratings on cable have less expectations. In fact, I think a jump to cable could help all the soaps. I do think radical changes are needed though. I still think it may benefit soaps to not air five days a week. People struggle to watch shows that air once a week from September to May let alone something that airs all year five days a week. We see that in the daily ratings and how they fluctuate. I also think soaps need to give up on summer and just go from September-May. I've said this before but the days of summer gains in the ratings are over. The audience just isn't there in summer. Hell, they aren't even around as much during other times of the year. I think changes like this can only help. The producers and writers would have less episodes to churn out so the budgets could be reduced further. Also, there is less chance of producers and writers getting burned out and stories could move faster, which is good for most fans who seem to not be able to stomach stories that last longer than a month anymore. The networks would just have to promote a bit more to make sure people know when the soaps will be back from summer hiatus and, if they cut a day off the weekly schedule, they would have to make sure the audience knows that too but it can work. |

I think the online thing is pretty much their ace in the hole. Plus, NBC pushing the over 55 audience now (see the 11/5 Suds report thread) could only help Days too. |
