Talk of recasts in another thread had me curious what people thought the best and worst recasts of all time. Here's mine. Should spark interesting discussion!

For the record, I'm not counting people like Susan Seaforth Hayes, Matthew Ashford, Renee Jones, Mary Beth Evans, Jay Johnson or Farah Fath or Rachel Melvin. People who are technically recasts, but whose previous actors were around so briefly that many don't even remember them. While I'm a fan of all of those above (well, calling me a "fan" of Farah Fath may be pushing it, but I liked Mimi well enough) and many of them are great actors, I don't think they're necessarily great recasts because the previous actors never really even had a chance to establish themselves or grow a fanbase on their own.

Best:

1. Eric Martsolf as Brady Black - Lowder's Brady is one of my least favorite Days characters ever, Martsolf's Brady is one of my favorite Days characters ever. By far the starkest contrast in actor's in my mind.
2. Martha Madison as Belle Black - Another stark contrast. I actually disliked Kirsten's Belle even more than Lowder's Brady, but Martha Madison was not quite the step-up that Eric was. I didn't start really appreciating her until they paired her with Jay Johnson.
3. Julie Pinson as Billie Reed - I just flat-out can't stand Lisa Rinna. Just looking at her or hearing her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I even like Krista Allen's pornstarrific Billie better. But Julie's Billie was so charming and likable that for the first time I was a fan of the character.
4. Chandler Massey as Will Horton - Dylan Patton was just so unbelievably bad. It was like someone had put a dusty mop on top of a block of wood and then moved it around like a puppet. Chandler Massey's still green, but already he's showing much more charisma and humanity. He went from the worst of the teens to the best of the teens.
5. Roark Critchlow as Mike Horton - The only one where I didn't think their original performer was bad, as Michael T. Weiss was certainly a great actor and an entertaining Mike. But Roark's Mike better fit my vision of the character, and the more sensitive, earnest, wholesome young man I think that was set up by Wesley Eure. He felt like a true All-American Horton. I feel like Michael T. Weiss would've been better casting for a different role.

Honorable Mentions: Lindsay Hartley as Arianna Hernandez, John Martin as Bill Horton.

Worsts

1. Steve Wilder as Jack Deveraux - Just a walking/talking Ken doll. The transformation of Jack from complex antihero to All-American action hero really took place under Mark Valley, but Valley was too strong an actor for me to hold much against him. Wilder's Jack was just laughably horrible and probably the greatest dichotomy between original character and recast that I've ever seen.
2. Kyle Brandt as Philip Kiriakis - Really basically the exact same circumstance as above. Johnson's Philip was this rich, cocky playboy. Brandt's Philip was G.I. Joe. As Brandt wasn't nearly as bad an actor as Wilder, he gets second place.
3. John Ingle and Kevin Dobson as Mickey Horton - Good lord, just good lord. One was so old and decrepit that he seemed more like a possible love interest for Alice rather than her son. And so dotty and befuddled that it was a wonder he hadn't been put into a home. The other came off like a sleazy Brooklyn mob attorney. Frankly, they shouldn't have recast Mickey in the first place, but if they felt they must, boy did they make the wrong choices.
4. Stephanie Cameron as Jennifer Deveraux - Like Mickey, Jennifer is just one of those characters you probably can't recast. Cameron was very very bad (Wasn't she some producer's girlfriend?) but at least the very basic tenets of Jennifer's personality remained, even if all her charm and cuteness were replaced with vapid stares and stilted dialogue delivery.
5. Robert Kelker-Kelly as Bo Brady - He has his own fanbase, I know, so I don't think this one's a very universal one... but I found him incredibly stiff and charmless and absent any of the traits that made Bo Brady the soap icon he was. Plus, again, I just don't think Bo should be recast period.

Honorable Mentions: Charity Rahmer as Belle Black (Is she the worst actress listed? Yes. But she was also only on the show for, like, 15 minutes, so it's hard for me to hate her too much. Basically the same thing that keeps the likes of Jay Johnson off the best recast list keeps Rahmer from ranking on this one for me)

Poor Elaine Princi. She can't play Dorian Lord, she can't play Linda Patterson.

I actually liked Camilla Scott's Melissa. But I know I'm a party of one on that. And you're right, Christopher Stone's Bill was awful. Forgot about him somehow.

Best

Matthew Ashford as Jack Deveraux (technically, he wasn't the first Jack)
Lauren Koslow as Kate Roberts
Martha Madison as Belle Black
Julie Pinson as Billie Reed
Mary Beth Evans as Kayla Brady
Rachel Melvin as Chelsea Brady
Susan Seaforth Hayes as Julie Olson Williams

Worst

Charity Rahmer as Belle Black
Josh Taylor as Roman Brady
Stephanie Cameron as Jennifer Horton
Steve Wilder as Jack Deveraux
John Ingle as Mickey Horton
Eric Martsolf as Brady Black (Lowder wasn't fantastic either, but Martsolf is just as bad if not worse)
Kyle Brandt as Philip Kiriakis (although I think JKJ is slightly overrated)
Austin Peck as Austin Reed
Krista Allen as Billie Reed
Roark Critchlow as Mike Horton
Frank Fata as Stefano DiMera
Dylan Patton as Will Roberts (Gerse was terrible too but since he was the first teenage Will, I won't include him on my list)
Camilla Banus as Gabi Hernandez (she's just as bad as her predecessor)

I actually think Princi is quite a good actress, and was formidable as Dorian from the clips I've seen of her. But, HELLO, 1) Dorian and Linda are very fierce, opinionated, no nonsense women. and 2) Nancy Pinkerton, Robin Strasser and Margaret Mason played them to perfection. Failing was her only option. However, that said, I would very much want to see some of her work as Dr. Kate Winograd. Seeing her play someone where she can't be compared to a stronger actress could prove interesting.

Now, as for Camilla Scott. It's merely my intense love for Lisa Trusel in the role to the point that no one else would ever be acceptable. Trusel never gets the kudos she deserves.

I love how, in the comments section of that video, people are saying that Martha Madison "was no Kirsten Storms" to imply that KS was the superior actress. No, Madison certainly was no Storms, and thank God for that!

Elaine Princi was definitely one of the worst recasts as Linda Patterson. It didn't have anything to do with her acting ability, Margaret Mason was just irreplaceable. I did see Princi as Dr. Kate Winograd. She was fine in the role, I just didn't think the character was very interesting. I liked her best as Miranda Marlowe on As the World Turns.

Am I right in thinking that the Kate Winograd character has, more or less, been retroactively turned into our own Kate Roberts?

I've never thought so. I just think Kate Winograd has been erased from history.

You're not the first one to voice that opinion.

Same here. If JER wanted to he could have referenced her as such, seeing as Kate Roberts isn't her real name and she was said to have had plastic surgery, all so she could stay hidden from Curtis. But nope, the characters, IMO, are just not one in the same.

I dont get the Pinson love, I really dont. Atleast not as far as Days goes. Once again, this soul sucking show managed to take an otherwise solid actress (PC, ATWT stints) and turn her into cardboard. (and Krista Allen FTW)

As for Brandt, there was a reason he was "G.I. Joe". He was a marine (or whatever). Anyway, I liked him alot better than JKJ by the end of his run (there was a lot of improvement), and greatly appreciated his blog.

Yes. By the end of his run, he was infinitely better than JKJ has ever been. Plus, I got to support my RW/RR people! :)

Are you old enough to remember Scott's awful BBS talkshow?

Additionally, I love Middendorf in general. She's a wonderful character actress.
