TV Guide Soaps columnist Michael Logan offers his picks for the best of 2010. Here they are: BEST SOAP: The Bold and the Beautiful How can one show be both gloriously uplifting and dirty as hell? That's the marvel of B&B! After back-to-back Emmy wins as best soap, this CBS serial should make it three in a row thanks to its daring lung-cancer plot involving big mama Stephanie Forrester (Susan Flannery), who nearly chose death over life. Episodes with Stephanie visiting the homeless on L.A.'s Skid Row, and giving them a chance to to tell their life stories, made for important and transcendent TV. At the same time, B&B shocked us silly with its oh-no-they-didn't scandals—young Oliver accidentally shtupping his girlfriend's mother! at a a masquerade party; Brooke's slow-burning attraction to her stepson Thomas—and that made us realize how dreadfully safe and sane other soaps have become. Of course, there oughta be a law against tossing this much trash in public. Thankfully, there ain't! BEST ACTOR: Jonathan Jackson As poor sap Lucky Spencer of General Hospital, he finally learned of that tawdry affair between his lady and his brother in seismic scenes full of fury and anguish and soul-wrenching complexity. We were left breathless. BEST ACTRESS: Melody Thomas Scott Nobody does hot mess better than this longtime, never Emmy'd star of The Young and the Restless, who took her character on a sad, pathetic train to Boozetown. Sobriety? Meh. We love our Nikki drunk as a skunk! BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR & BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Don Hastings and Kathryn Hays Watching these timeless vets send As the World Turns off the air with class and grace made the loss of a great soap bearable. He was Bob, the hopelessly busy chief of staff. She played Kim, his frustrated wife. No showboating here. This was pure, unfussy acting straight from the heart. STAR OF THE YEAR: James Franco When was the last time a guy starred in an afternoon soap, then turned around and hosted the freakin' Academy Awards? Like, um, never. This wondrously subversive actor rocked General Hospital as Franco—a deadly, smart-ass artist with a mad crush on a mobster—and suddenly made daytime drama ultracool. He's a surefire Oscar nominee for 127 Hours but not letting it go to his head: Franco returns to GH in February! REST OF THE BEST: More Great Performances: Eric Sheffer Stevens as Reid, the Grinchy ATWT neurosurgeon whose sizzling—yet sexless—romance with young Luke (Van Hansis) made the couple of the year.… Michael Learned—Ma Walton herself!—was a daffy delight as doomed GH patient Shirley Smith.… All My Children's egregiously underused Debbi Morgan (Angie) returned to top form in a blindness plot and reclaimed her superstar status. Brava!… Kim Zimmer was flat-out fabulous as the annoying Echo on One Life to Live. Reva who? Sweet Surprise: Movie queen Julianne Moore went back to ATWT to honor the soap that launched her brilliant career. The kid is all right. The Perfect Farewell: Days of Our Lives made the best of an inevitable situation—the loss of beloved 95-year-old Frances Reid—by killing off her character, Alice, in a multi-week death watch and funeral that was stunningly acted by an array of returning stars. Kudos, too, to exec producer Ken Corday for his lovely and startling memoir: The Days of Our Lives: The True Story of One Family's Dream and the Untold History of Days of Our Lives. (But, dude, that title!) Best News Ever: At a time when soaps are considered as dead as dinosaurs, NBC recently gave Days a two-year extension and ABC re-signed its OLTL honchos to long-term deals. And then CBS proudly picked up B&B for two more years and Y&R for three. It's truly the season of hope and miracles! Courtesy of Goldderby. |

Thanks for the info. I'm definitely pleased that Eric Sheffer Stevens was recognized for his work on ATWT. He was a true find for that show, especially for the last nine months of it being on the air. |
