This is from the print edition of TV Guide Magazine. The Worst in Soap 2010 WHAT A BAD YEAR for soaps. There was deceit, bitterness, homophobia - and some of it was even on screen! The Truth is Out There The September demise of Proctor & Gamble's As the World Turns hurt like hell - still does - but we can't only be hatin' on CBS for the cancellation. As the soap was ending its landmark, 54-year run, word began to leak that P&G - which had been playing the victim card to the press - had secretly wanted out of the soap game for years. NPR recently confirmed it. Now that final, crappy season of Guiding Light suddenly makes sense. When in Rome The year's most heralded event - and most botched storyline - was Vanessa Marcil Giovinazzo's return to General Hospital. Instead of bringing her supermodel character, Brenda Barrett, back to town with a bang, the soap spent weeks (and weeks) showing her being stalked by inept baddies in Rome and being fretted over by Adrienne Barbeau. By the time our Miss Brenda finally arrived in Port Chuck, we didn't give a hoot. A massive and puzzling misfire from a usually fab show. Don't Ask, Can't Sell Did anti-gay viewers kill Kish? ABC blamed One Life to Live's tanking ratings on boyfriends Kyle and Fish and dumped the groundbreaking characters, claiming they "failed to resonate with the mainstream audience." Now there's only one gay left on ABC Daytime - All My Children's snoozily wholesome Bianca, whose last lady love is safely tucked away in Europe. Extreme Makeovers In the dopiest plot of 2010, The Young and the Restless had not one but two plastic-surgery doppelgangers terrorizing Genoa City at the same time. Adding injury to insult, a PR rep for the show didn't like what I wrote about the evil-twin overkill and had me banned from scoops for a whole damn month! Free speech costs a lot more than it used to. Lather, Rinse, No Repeat Man, am I gonna miss my suds replays! ABC decided to drop its cable godsend SOAPnet, to be replaced in January 2012 by Disney Junior, a 24-hour channel aimed at preschoolers. Really? Little kids are watching TV at 3am just like me? Bad Sport of the Year No, it wasn't Eric Braeden for suggesting that Neil Patrick Harris needs a spanking (that was actually rather kinky). The honor goes to OLTL newbie Brett Claywell (the aforementioned Kyle), who had a public fit when he didn't get nominated for an Emmy. Declared Claywell via Twitter: "Daytime is such a joke." Declared dozens upon dozens of longtime soap greats who have never once been nominated: "Brett who?" Passages Death inevitably claims a few fan faves each year, but 2010 was especially tough. We bid adieu to that divine gent James Mitchell, so sardonically brilliant for 30 years as AMC's Palmer, and Frances Reid, whose warm, sage, doughnut-baking Alice graced Days of Our Lives for over four decades. And, oh how we wish ATWT's Helen Wagner had lived just a few months more. As Nancy, she said the very first words on the soap back in 1956. It would have been so grand and historic if she'd also said the last ones. In an era where the term "legend" is handed out much too freely, these three were the real deal. |
