Rumor: ABC Soap Cancellations

I spoke with a friend today who works in the finance organization at Disney corporate and he told me that sadly we will lose at least two shows from the soap lineup by 2012. The reason he said was as we've all been discussing, they are not profitable based on costs of production over rate of return on investment. He said that when SoapNet leaves the air the shows will go from 5 impressions per episode down to 1 and that will be their death knell. Currently with SoapNet each episode is broadcast once on ABC then rebroadcast 4 times on SoapNet (2 evening / 1 next morning / 1 weekend marathon). This allows the network to make some money on those rebroadcasts by selling commercial inventory for each of the reruns. When that inventory goes away, the only commercial inventory will be on the original broadcast and that does not generate enough money to sustain the shows.

He also said that's likely why the PG soaps were the first to go, bc they had no immediate redistribution channel, i.e., they didnt air on SoapNet. Bold and the Beautiful is unique with the half-hour format and that helps with the syndication in international markets.

I'm depressed after hearing this because this guy doesn't have a reason to make this stuff up. He's not a soap viewer but just a person in the corporate world with intel on what's being planned.

I don't get your friend logic regarding ABC cancellations are should I say his assessment however I'm not refuting, it just seems I Don't Know! Unclear. Well I'm just staying hopeful that All My Children, One Life to Live and General Hospital will be saved for at least a few years and give the actors/actresses sometime to find work elsewhere.

Thanks for Sharing.

If this is true then why, of the 3 soaps on ABC, are they talking of canceling the only one that actually comes in under budget?

Regardless... I seriously believe that all soaps will be gone by 2015, sadly. :shame:

I think the last shows standing with be B&B and Y&R. As long as they continue to sell well on the international market.

I totally agree they will gone soon. Talk shows and reality shows will rule the airways sadly.

He didn't say which shows would be canceled. We've only heard through other sources it would probably be AMC and OLTL. As Tammy posted above, not sure why OLTL would be targeted as one of two given they are meeting their budget guidelines. I can assume its brand recognition as it has always been the supposed step-child in the trilogy of ABC soaps.

This is terrible. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. I love OLTL and it really makes me sick to think it will be going off the air.

Interesting, and that actually makes sense from the accounting side of things. SoapNet provides an additional revenue stream for the shows, and without that they make less money.
