Chuck fans rejoice: Your favorite Nerd Herder-turned-spy may be sticking around for another year.

NBC is reportedly nearing a deal to bring the spy series back for a fifth season for at least 13 episodes, according to TVLine.com.

This season the action comedy has been averaging 5.2 million viewers, but hit a series low of 4.03 million viewers on April 11. Chuck has gotten eleventh-hour renewals the past few seasons in part thanks to "Save Chuck" fan campaigns. It will air its fourth season finale on Monday.

NBC reps were not able to comment about the report, but an official announcement is expected Sunday at their Upfront presentation.

Following Fox's head start on pilot pickups, NBC has ordered comedies from Whitney Cummings and Parks & Recreation writer Emily Spivey, along with drama series Smash and Prime Suspect, Deadline.com reports.

Spivey's Up All Night (which TVGuide.com had spotlighted as one of its 11 Promising Pilots) is an irreverent look at parenthood from the perspectives of an acerbic working mother (Christina Applegate), her stay-at-home husband (Will Arnett) and her outspoken mom and dad. Spivey wrote the pilot and will executive-produce with Saturday Night Live's Lorne Michaels. Maya Rudolph will also star.

Whitney stars creator Cummings and Chris D'Elia as a couple weathering the ups and downs of modern-day committed relationships. My Boys' creator Betsy Thomas will also executive-produce. Zoe Lister-Jones, Dan O'Brien, Maulik Pancholy, Rhea Seehorn and Beverly D'Angelo will also star.

The pickup of two female-driven comedies is smart for NBC, who has seen success with Tina Fey's 30 Rock and Amy Poehler's Parks & Rec. Plus: The network needs to restock its comedy vault after canceling Perfect Couples, The Paul Reiser Show and, most likely, Outsourced. Earlier Wednesday it was reported that NBC's spy dramedy Chuck is nearing a deal to return for Season 5.

On the drama side, NBC has invested in Steven Spielberg's Smash, which follows a group of people, including Debra Messing as a put-upon lyricist and Katharine McPhee as a spirited ingénue, as they come together to put on a Broadway show about Marilyn Monroe. Grammy and Tony winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman (Hairspray) will write original songs for the show, which has the potential to bring in Glee-like revenue for the network.

Prime Suspect, an adaptation of the British miniseries, centers on a tough female detective (Maria Bello) who has to make her bones in a tough New York precinct dominated by men. Sarah Aubrey and Peter Berg (Friday Night Lights) will executive-produce. Aidan Quinn, Kirk Acevedo, Tim Griffin, Peter Gerety, Damon Gupton, Toby Stephens, Brian O'Bryne and Joe Nieves will also star.

Anything with Maya Rudolph should be worth checking out at least once.

The British version of Prime Suspect with Helen Mirren was very good. Not sure how this version will do...

Chuck averages 5 million viewers. It's demos suck, but it's really no different than some of their sitcoms, like Community and even Parenthood. They'd be hypocrites to renew them and not Chuck. It's 5th season will be it's last and give it enough for syndication. That's why.

Punk Cabaret is Freedom

Why would anyone give Whitney Cummings her own show? She's one of the least funny people on Chelsea Lately.

I might check out smash because I love Debra, but who knows if it will last.

It's official!

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/05/13/chuck-nbc/

It‘s Chuck versus a new NBC president.

And Chuck won!

The perpetual bubbliest of the broadcast bubble shows has once again pulled out a victory, securing a fifth round that will air on NBC next season. The network has ordered 13 episodes for Warner Bros., sources confirm.

For awhile there, things looked possibly bleak for our heroes. New NBC chief Robert Greenblatt took the reins and inherited a new crop of pilots to shape into his own hits, while at the same time Chuck was dipping in the rating — the show averaged 5.6 million viewers and a 2.0 rating among adults 18-49 this season.

According to Deadline (and like I have personally speculated for day snow) is that the 5th season of Chuck will be it's last. It was nice of NBC to renew it for a final season. They're also likely doing it for syndication purposes.
