Huge shakeup at Simon Cowell's new show "X-Factor" -- TMZ has learned singer Cheryl Cole will no longer be a judge ... and will be replaced by ex-"Pussycat Dolls" member Nicole Scherzinger.

It's unclear why Cheryl is out -- but we're told the replacement happened very recently.

Nicole was originally supposed to co-host the show with Steve Jones when it debuts in September -- but now, she'll be sitting on the judge's panel alongside Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and LA Reid.

Calls to Cowell's camp have not been returned.

Story developing ...

GET EM STEPH!!

I can't help but feel this won't go as well as it should've. I think they waited too long to bring it over here and now they already have a shakeup. I don't know. Just something tells me the show will do well but won't be HUGE.

I think it will still be huge. :) I hope so anyway.

I want a new show to blow DWTS and Idol out of the water. I am so OVER THEM.

Don't get me wrong. I think it will still pull in good numbers but I'm thinking along the lines of the high water numbers The Voice seems to be pulling in. Maybe something like 12-13 million viewers.

Ditto.

I'm not a big Cheryl Cole fan either, but I'd take her over Nicole any day.

I can't stand her either. I was ok with her being a host since to me she doesn't have enough talent to be a judge. Maybe Jimmy Iovine is still pulling strings for her.... :yuk:

Cheryl Cole was never going to work in the first place. America (particularly that middle part that seems to eat up these shows) was never going to accept, or understand, her heavy welsh accent.

If I didn't read up about X-Factor I wouldn't have even known who Cheryl Cole was. What I wonder is if Steve Jones who also has an accent will be understood by the audience. Has there been reports anywhere about how she was on the panel with the auditions? That may give us some clues.

I wasn't a big Scherzinger fan until I saw her as Maureen in Rent at the Hollywood Bowl last summer. She totally stole the show. I loved her from then on out.

this is better because if we cant understand a word it wont be good for the show.
