'Young and the Restless': Jeanne Cooper's on leave, so her stand-in is ... EXCLUSIVE
by Lynette Rice
Categories: Casting Scoops, Daytime Soaps, EW Exclusive

Katherine Chancellor is going to look a little different in the coming weeks. EW has learned exclusively that Michael Learned — best known for her Emmy-winning role on The Waltons — will fill in for veteran actor Jeanne Cooper (Katherine) on a temporary basis.

Cooper needed time off for medical reasons — rest assured, she’s okay – but the producers needed to continue her storyline so Learned will pick up the slack until the veteran soap star can resume taping in November. Cooper, who turns 83 on Oct. 25, has played Katherine for 38 years.

“Michael Learned is an accomplished actress and we are grateful that she is able to fill in for Jeanne Cooper for this short time,” said Executive Producer and Head Writer Maria Arena Bell in a statement. “Jeanne is an integral part of our show and we look forward to her imminent return. We have great storyline coming up for Mrs. Chancellor.”

Learned, whose first day of taping is Wednesday, will appear on the CBS sudser beginning Nov. 10. She’s no stranger to the daytime scene: Just last year, she appeared on General Hospital, and before that, One Life to Live and All My Children.

Hah....for a quick minute, just by looking at the first name, I thought they were going to have a man in drag playing Katherine.

That woulda been....amazing.

You are swearing now that some day - some day you will destroy me. Remember, far better women than you have sworn to do the same. Go and look for them now.

The way I read this title was that the character Michael was going to play Mrs.Chancellor.

I hope this isn't another Betty Driver senario.

I hope this isn't another Betty Driver senario.
They had a couple of other substitute Kays back in the 1980s! They were very temporary! I hope this is too! At least Corrie didn't try a temporary Betty! That would have really sucked!

I don't like this at all. :'( What if she is unhappy how they have written her and it's taking it's toll on her?

I'm guessing she's going to have a little "work" done and will come back looking a lot younger.
I don't like the idea of a replacement, couldn't they have just had her go overseas to take care of some chancellor business or her and murphy go on a trip?
They replaced Ted Shackleford with a "temp" now both Ted and the temp are MIA.

Uh, she's a bit young to be playing Kay. Michael's a wonderful actress (what the hell were her parents thinking anyway?), but they really should have just written Kay off on a business trip or vacation with Murphy instead of suddenly making Kay eleven years younger.

You beat me to it. ML can act, no doubt about it, but she's a bit young IMHO for the role. Hopefully, whatever is going on with JC, she recovers quickly.

They don't re-cast when Victor takes medical leave why for Mrs. C? What's so urgent that can't wait a couple weeks?
If Mrs. C is so vital to the story shouldn't they wait until JC comes back?

Nothing against ML but she can never be Mrs. C, no one can at this point. I'm not happy about this. This doesn't sound like a last minute emergency more like MAB using JC's medical leave as an opportunity to stunt cast with Mrs Walton. It just rubs me the wrong way.

hiring a temp is the new trend. GH is doing this with Maxie. I would have preferred a write out.

"Physically Ill" or "Contract Negotiations Ill"?
I was thinking the latter. If it is true, then MAB and SONY are the dumbest fools in the entertainment industry.

But Granny Cooper also has to realize that an 83 year old woman doesn't fit into today's Y&R. Her guarantee's gonna be reduced and she's not going to have a real storyline.

I only mention this is a negotiation ploy because she renewed her contract three years ago around this time. That was during the Kay/Marge stuff IIRC.
