The tape that Ronan receives shows Nikki with a bloody rock in her hand. But even so Ronan does not believe Nikki killed Diane nor does Phyllis. And they are determined to prove her innocent and find the killer. According to Hamner Phyllis is motivated in part out of loyalty to Nikki "based on the history she and Nikki shared." Ronan's reason is more professional. He has a cop's instinct that neither Nikki or Victor are guilty. Phyllis confided in Nick that she and Ronan are looking for evidence to clear both his parents. Nick decides to work with them.
