Seeing GH dead last in both total viewers and W18-49 is very gratifying. |

Dreaming of a Melanie-free Days
![]()

Well, good for Days that it got the biggest holiday bump--unfortunately, this past week was mostly pretty awful so it'll be interesting to see if they sustain it or if it was purely a function of people having time off. If this regime could figure out pacing that would be, like, a 40% improvement. |

Wow I wasn't expecting those numbers, good for them. I've hardly tuned in myself, this show doesn't give me any reason to watch. The Will stuff aside, the show is still a mess.

Hope this proves they don't have to 'shock' the audience with ridiculous stunts in order to earn ratings. |

WOW!!!! Wonderful news for DAYS! AMAZING! That week they had solid couples, Rafe/Sami, Austin/Carrie, John/Marlena, Bo/Hope, and Ej/Nicole this proves that viewers dont want to see doom, gloom and bed hopping all the time! |

Wow, I fear that the idiots at ABC might use this to cancel GH for Couric's unneeded show -- I know it is already scheduled for fall of 2012, but there are those rumors that it will take GH's place..

Does anyone have a day by day breakdown of what stories & characters were on Days last week? Curious to see if certain characters/stories attracted the audience or if it is due to the holidays and many people being home . Edited by trojangal, Jan 7 2012, 11:18 PM.

Katie Couric's show is syndicated. It will air on some ABC stations, some NBC stations, some CBS stations, and even a few FOX affiliates. ABC has already announced that it will provide/supply only three hours of a network feed in September 2012. Four shows will vie for those three hours. Unless Barbara Walters keels over or decides to end The View, that hour is locked in. The Chew and The Rev will duke it out, are ridiculously inexpensive to produce, and will likely fill out the 3-hour schedule. The Chew doesn't seem to have tanked quite yet, but those promos for The Rev are hideous. ABC affiliates want the GH hour so they can air syndicated fare, which means more $$$$ than the 2 minutes of air time they get to sell in a network feed. Sure, plenty of them will buy the Katie show (or have already bought it -- its already been sold to 80% of then nation's media markets, mostly ABC affiliates, but not all), but other ABC affiliates will plop whatever judge show or chat show or local news program into that timeslot to make more money. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katie_(talk_show) Edited by dooldooldool, Jan 8 2012, 07:04 AM.

Exactly. The audience wants to see real couples in loves with good storylines, not this swing your partner garbage that Days has been handing out. Last week was a good week with good solid couples at the forefront. We don't need some shock and awe scene to bring in viewers and this week proved it. Get a clue, Mardar. |

I thought ratings weren't based on couples? Because if they are, then Ejami brought the show at no. 2 the week they were on for only two days, in November. |

Ratings are usually up for soaps this week as people are home for the holidays. Poor GH though. They are just bleeding viewers they were not able to get a bump at all for this week. ABC blew it big time canceling OLTL before GH. OLTL is cheaper to produce and getting a lot better ratings. GH is so gone too. As for Days, this was their chance to grab on to some casual viewers and retain them. Did they? Was the show exciting and did the story move along? (I don't know because I don't watch it anymore.) If not, then ratings will go right back into the toilet once the holiday break is over. Concerning is that their demos didn't move much at all and that's the only #s the network cares about. So the .2 jump in HH is nice but doesn't impress the network. 18-34 is still a dismal .5 and 18-49 only got a .1 bump from their all-time low of .8 to .9. Sad demos. And this when a lot of college-aged kids are home for the holidays. Days needs to do more to attract younger viewers. They could start by having some younger characters you can care about and don't want to strangle (cough Melanie cough). Just a thought. Edited by ElvisDiMera, Jan 8 2012, 06:56 PM.

I think they are successfully doing this Will. Young legacy character with compelling story line with vets (Sami, EJ, Marlena). Really smart to build those inter-generational relationships. I think part of the reason Jennifer and Hope are so popular is because they had all those wonderful bonding scenes with Grandma Horton. People tune in to DOOL for those family stories. They are wasting a similar opportunity with Sonny. We should be seeing him with Victor, Adrienne and Justin. They tried to do this with Melanie by tying her to Maggie. And rewriting her blood lines to relate her to Carly and Daniel. GA is resentful as too many real legacy characters have been destroyed to prop her. This egg baby SL was the final straw. As for Chad - he is a fake DiMera for me. Bogus created history with Stefano and a whore from years ago. Same as Quinn. He doesn't feel like a real Alamain - son of Vivienne and nephew of Lawrence. I really HATE when writers re-write history to prop characters or plot points. Soaps have existing, rich history. Something other genres don't have. Writers should use that strength rather than making this genre a joke by rewriting shit. It's stupid and offensive - shows lack of respect for audience. |

I agree. There are several characters that were born on Days that they should use instead of making up new ones!!! Donovan children were are you??? |

I think the thing that has always been brought up is that one couple or actor/actress do not make or break the ratings. In this case, there was a nice mix of couples in love- Jarlena, Bope, Safe, Caustin, Ejole, Bradison- and some good holiday scenes, along with the Will/Marlena scenes. It all seemed to fit. There was no bed hopping, no swing your partner, and no shock and awe scenes. Those things aren't necessary to bring in good ratings. |

It was a holiday week all soaps barring GH got bumps. And Y&R got a healthier gain in the demo than Days or OLTL did. Couples don't mean anything in terms of ratings. GH Is DOA. Their timeslot is gone come Sept 2012 and the person who has Brian Frons's job is a syndication and lifestyle show specialist. even if either of the 2 new shows fail I doubt GH will be saved why? Is it some kind of ratings hit for ABC? |
