There may be life after daytime for ABC's last remaining soap opera, General Hospital, which is likely to get the ax later this year to make room for Katie Couric's new syndicated talk show. One scenario being discussed has the drama continuing as a short-run prime-time summer series, similar to Spanish-language networks' telenovelas, says an ABC insider. Even if the cost of production doubled over the typical soap budget (around $200,000 per episode), a nighttime version of GH would still be inexpensive for an original scripted show. http://www.tvguide.com/News/General-Hospital-Primetime-1041986.aspx |

Terrible idea. A show that only runs 2-3 months once a year during the worst tv watching months of the year? Subject to renewals months ahead of production, never knowing if this summer would be the last? Better to just end it properly on ABCD. |

This would guarantee that all three ABC soaps got cliffhanger endings because I assure you this experiment wouldn't last beyond one season and we would all be left hanging. Plus, this show would look horrible on primetime. The only set that even compares to a standard network drama is the hospital. All the others (Sonny's "restaurant", the bar, Patrick/Robin's house) look cheap as hell. |

A move to primetime is what I always envisioned for the future of daytime soaps. But this format doesn't sound promising.

Last year at the start of the TV season, it was said that ABC is looking for low cost scripted series to air on Friday nights. I was baffled and have said many times, that they didn't pursue anything with the soaps! Announcing a spin-off for AMC starring Susan Lucci would've been a huge deal and also would've appeased the fans a little bit. They could easily spin it as Erica moving on up to primetime and I genuinely think they'd promote it well. You could move Erica to a new city with her children and you have a show that basically writes itself. Then we now have OLTL which was canceled and I'm not sure what they would do for a spin-off, but it's ratings were strong enough that you can justify it. Even if they get a 13 episode order and it isn't a success, it would be worth the risk IMO. I'd *love* to see them attempt it. Unfortunately, GH is the one I'd least like to see move to primetime. |

Good God what will they come up with next? Just admit that it's being canceled and be done with already. No one's buying that the show isn't going off the air, we know it's not going to primetime. JUST STOP LYING ALREADY. Geez. :frustration: I'd love to see GH survive since it's my favorite but the more I hear the more I know it's just not happening. |

Why replace GH with Katie Couric. All of her shows bomb. She can replace Dr. Oz (Oprah's old spot). Y&R tried primetime once and it was a flop. |

This just sounds like something to ease fans' minds so that when ABC axes GH, they can at least say they tried to think of other options -_- |

They released small movie specials in a primetime block based on the show with most of the characters in the early nineties. One was "One Stormy Night"...can't remember the other one. |

Hmmm...I seem to recall them doing fairly well....they always aired right before the SOD Awards in the early-mid 90's. |
