Usually, Kenny or someone posts the homecoming videos and photos for the top 3 so I thought I would since they are usually one of the things people love most about Idol. I just posted the links to MJ's Big Blog site. Each link takes you to an article that contains pictures and videos of each of the top 3: Jessica's Homecoming Joshua's Homecoming Philip Philips Homecoming Of course, the best part of the homecomings is when we get the montages on the results show because there has never been a year where people haven't teared up LOL. Can't wait. Also, Adam Lambert and Lisa Marie Presley will be performing on the results show so it should be pretty good. Always the best results show of the season. As for tonight, song spoilers are out. The contestants will sing 3 songs: Jimmy’s Choice, Judges Choice and Their Choice so nothing surprising there. The song spoilers aren't match up to the contestants (although you can guess who would sing what for some) and we don't know whether each song was a contestant, judge, or Jimmy choice but one song may be obviously a Stephen Tyler pick for someone. Here are tonight's songs: "Imagine" John Lennon "My All" - Mariah Carey "No More Drama" - Mary J Blige "We've Got Tonight" - Bob Seger "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" - Aerosmith "Beggin" - Madcon "I'll Be There" - Jackson 5 "Disease" - Matchbox 20 "I'd Rather Go Blind" - Etta James I'm guessing Tyler picked "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" for someone, although I never took him as one who would choose a song his band performed for someone else to sing. That song is one of favorite of all-time and I was shocked that it had never been performed much on Idol until season 7 but, since then, it seems like it gets performed ALOT. It's kind of getting repetitive but it's a great song that stands the test of time so, as long as whoever sings it does right by it, it's all good. I'm guessing Joshua will sing it. He's the one person I could see Stephen giving that song too. The Etta James song is clearly Jessica. I bet it's her choice too. She performed it prior to Idol and she loves songs that make her come off a bit too mature. I can't see the judges or Jimmy choosing that for her since they've been taking issue with her singing songs too old for her. She will do good with that though. I think the John Lennon song and Matchbox 20 song are Philip. I dread hearing him sing "Imagine" but, if he surprises me, he could have a moment there. The rest I'm not too sure on. Actually, many of these songs could be Jessica or Joshua song picks because they tend to fall in the same area. Should be an interesting show. I hate that it's 2 hours though. This is the first year the show has kept 2 hour performance shows all season. I wish they at least dropped down to 90 minutes like they did last season. I'm guessing we will be getting two trio performances in the midst of all the individual performances. I really think having to do all these duets, trios, etc on top of the individual performances during these 2 hour shows is burning the contestants out. |

No surprise. She was hesitant to return for this season it seemed. Her being a judge was purely a way for her to reinvigorate her career while she also raised her kids. Her kids are older now and she is relevant again. She has no reason to stick around. I will say she seems more into being a judge this year and is also more personable than she was last season. |

What an odd night but top 3 night usually is since there are hardly any big "moments" performance-wise during top 3 anymore and this year was no exception. It seems every year the judges, producers/Jimmy, and contestants make huge errors in song choices (sometimes it's sabotage but, shockingly, there was none of that this year) and that is why there are never any memorable moments. Alas, there were great performances though. This is the first top 3 in ages where you felt the judges would except any outcome. Yes, I think the judges have given up on the idea of manipulating a Philip Philips ouster. That much was evident when they gave him the last spot in the performance order and the song choices both Stephen and Jimmy gave him suggested that they have now adopted the "if we can't beat him, let's make him look good and hope when he wins, he sells more than we think he will" mentality. I think they've accepted he will likely win but are still hoping he doesn't. I was really shocked by the performance order and the song choices tonight. Philip had the best of both while Jessica and Joshua struggled. Plus, Randy drove me nuts with his talk about Jessica lacking moments tonight. Totally pathetic criticism when 2 out of the 3 song choices weren't her's. This is the one night of the season you can't lay too much blame on the contestant when the judge's and Jimmy play a huge role. I was also shocked by the song choices. I made some predictions as to who I thought would sing what but I was way off. I'm stunned Jessica chose "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" for herself. Never saw that coming but not surprised Jennifer said Stephen is hard on people who sing his songs. That is why I had a hard time imagining him letting anyone sing any of his songs, aside from Joshua, who the judges all seem to like. Speaking of Joshua, STUNNED that he chose "Imagine." I thought that would be a Philip song, although all the song choices for Philip made sense. Really surprised Joshua was given the Etta James song and "No More Drama" as well. Both choices I thought would be Jessica's but, as I said before, you could pretty much interchange song choices for Joshua and Jessica if you wanted to. I should've guessed they would fill time tonight with the hometown visit footage. I thought trio performances but glad it was the hometown stuff. I hope we get more tomorrow because those are usually more a staple of the top 3 results night. Still, it was much better than forcing more performances on the top 3. They came off very tired tonight IMO. I've never seen the Idols worked as much as they have been this season. Also, the 8 other finalists we saw in the audience tonight (Jeremy, Shannon, Erika, Hee Jun, DeAndre, Colton, Elise, Skylar, and Hollie) got more airtime tonight than they did when they were still on the show LOL. Glad Erika went back to being blond as the black short do really wouldn't work long-term on her. Hee-Jun's haircut looked great! Elise still looked rather bitchy but that is just her facial expression, as she's admitted in interviews. Nice to see them all though. Oh, and about the hometown visits, I was STUNNED Jessica had so many people at her's. I recall Adam Lambert's a few seasons back, which was also in California, and he didn't have as big a crowd as David and Kris had. Jessica had a much more sizable crowd. I teared up seeing her sing to her dad and interact with her little brothers. Joshua's got to me too, as did Philip's when he broke down while in the parade with his parents. You can't not get teary-eyed during these homecoming packages. I also liked how these hometown packages helped us get to know all 3 more. Jessica and Philip, who have been coming off more and more likable in recent weeks because we've seen their personalities more, came off really well (Joshua did too but the other two did moreso as Joshua was already likable prior to the last few weeks and tonight). Idol really missed the boat on not showing us more of the Idols' personalities earlier in the competition as well as more about their backgrounds. Philip's homecoming was just as huge and ruckus as I expected. There were just as many screaming girls as one would expect. Ok, all those general thoughts being said, on to the performances: Joshua-Performance #1: Started rough but he did his thing at the end. I didn't like him at first but the last few weeks I like the restraint he's showed and how toned down he's been so I've come around. Solid performance IMO. Again, I was shocked Jessica didn't do the song as she likes doing Etta James-type stuff but it works for Joshua too, as I noted before. Sure, Randy could've chose better for him but it did work. Not worthy of a standing ovation from the judges though. Then again, most of the judges' standing ovations have not been for performances not worthy enough so, there you go. Jessica-Performance #1: Really enjoyed this performance. I've seen people say they didn't and thought it was boring but I liked it. She always either does power uptempos or power ballads and here she was given a more vulnerable ballad. Good song choice by Jennifer and allowed Jessica to just sing the song, show another side to herself, while also not coming off too "old." Very tough song to sing too. It was a very appealing performance but also risky at this stage of the competition as it doesn't give you a huge moment given she chose the "soft" approach. She could've given more power to it but I'm glad she didn't. This was a beautiful performance and vocal by her, one of her best IMO. Philip-Performance #1: Great choice of song by Stephen, first of all. I worry about song choices with Stephen and Jennifer because you never sense they know what they are doing but either they got help or they have some idea because they've done ok the past 2 seasons. Stephen picked something that made sense but also challenged Philip a bit. I actually liked this performance. Sure, it wasn't groundbreaking but it's my second favorite performance of his ("Volcano" from last week is still the best). Also, much like last week, he seems to be trying and putting more energy into his performances. I have to commend him because he has medical issues but he's putting it all out there. I feel bad ragging on him all season but I always felt he could do more despite his condition and he finally is. I felt him pushing more with his vocal too. Solid job here by him. Rankings for Judge's Choice/Round 1: Jessica had the best vocal IMO (and had the toughest song to sing) so she ranks first. Philip beats Joshua for me because I think everything just clicked better for him and Joshua had a rough start IMO to his performance so: 1.) Jessica, 2.) Philip, 3) Joshua Joshua-Performance #2: Still can't believe he picked this song and, honestly, it was hit or miss for me. Parts of it were good and parts were bad. He always brings the emotion so the performance resonates with you but I felt like it started off ok, got bad, got ok again, got bad, and so on and so forth. He did end it well and he didn't go too over the top. I think he just went flat on some notes because he tried too hard not to be over the top so he was underneath alot of the song. He could've picked a much better song for himself. I actually wanted Philip to sing this because, despite what I think about him as a performer, I think if he really put his all into it, he could've had a moment on "Imagine." Nonetheless, Joshua was rather erratic on this performance. Jessica-Performance #2: As I said, I would've never guessed she would sing this song. I mentioned earlier how so many on these singing shows seem to sing this song now so it's repetitive but, as long as it's done right, I'm good. Jessica did right by it. It wasn't her best vocal or performance but that's because the song doesn't really suit her. She made it work and "SLAYED" the end of it, particularly the last note. Nice to see Stephen get up and clap as a show of respect given how Jennifer said he's a harsh critic of those who sing his songs (too bad he can't be just as harsh a critic at the judge's table LOL). Always a bold choice though to sing a song in front of the original artist so props to Jessica. Philip-Performance #2: A song from Matchbox 20 is a good idea for him so he definitely made the best song choice for himself compared to Jessica and Joshua BUT given how Philip seems to lack so much energy in his performances, I wouldn't have went in this direction. He had a good energy on his first performance but not on this one. That is why I wouldn't have picked it. He should've picked something like "Volcano" last week where he doesn't have to put alot of energy into it to make it work. To me, this regressed him back to pre-top 4 Philip Philips. It had nothing to it. As Randy said, you need a moment every time you perform and he picked a song that's great but due to his performance quality, it was too flat and lifeless. So, he should've picked something else or put alot more energy into what he picked. Rankings for Contestant Choice/Round 2: I'll go Jessica by default in first. She had the best song choice in terms of allowing her more of a moment (although Philip's song suited him best). Joshua was all over the place and Philip was back to being...Philip so: 1.) Jessica, 2.) Joshua (had more energy to his performance), 3.) Philip Joshua-Performance #3: Awesome. Flat out awesome. Leave it to Jimmy to choose something to give him a moment but is also different for him in that it's a more edgier song. He needed something different and something that would allow him to just lose himself in the song and do what he does best...own the stage. He did that...and then some. That part where he just threw his jacket and ear-piece off and just went crazy with the vocals was FANTASTIC. I will say this...he always leaves it all on the stage. Always. That's his thing. His performances ALWAYS resonate emotionally because he feels every bit of the song he picks, whether he's lived through what the song is talking about or not. That is why I don't believe the whole "you need life experience" to sing certain songs" stuff. Joshua finds a way to always connect, no matter what. The great singers do. Great choice by Jimmy and GREAT performance. Jessica-Performance #3: Another great song choice by Jimmy. He's been saying how Jessica has to avoid coming off older and needs to start singing younger songs. His explanation for choosing "I'll Be There" made sense. As he said, the song is something she would pick as she likes these kind of songs and it appeals to her older audience but it also has a young feel to it so it appeals to the younger audience too. Whenever I hear this song, it's always hard not to hear Micheal and the Jackson's on it. Jessica actually sounded like Micheal in spots with her tone. This was a solid performance. Nothing spectacular. She hit the big notes as always but no real moment, which is an issue. Good vocals for sure though and performed well. Philip-Performance #3: Ok, it wouldn't be Idol if something didn't cause me to be enraged. Let me just say that I like that Philip did not use the guitar here and also went with an orchestra behind him for a change. The whole performance setting was different so I applaud him for being different by his normal standards. I also applaud him for singing the actual melody of a song for only the second time this season. So, he switched things up for sure so kudos. Now, I won't say this was terrible because it wasn't. However, it reminded me alot of when Blake Lewis in season 5. The singing was exactly the same. It was flat with no changes in tone or register. The whole song basically stayed on one level and never moved up or down. There was no vocal variation at all and, yet, the judges give him a standing ovation and I see so many going nuts over this performance. I tend to think people were shocked by him not having the guitar, just singing the song and the melody, and having the orchestra and not a band. I'm thinking it was so different it shocked people so they got wrapped up in the shock but, vocally, it was easily amateurish. It was like a guy serenading his girlfriend outside her bedroom window. Again, not terrible and kudos on doing something different but the singing was not deserving of the praise it got from judges and fans IMO. No way. It also made me mad that Stephen mentioned how it didn't even matter that he didn't hit the notes because of his passion. UH, EXCUSE ME?! Singing is pretty important on this show. It's not the only thing but it's the biggest thing. We can't excuse not hitting the notes just because of someone's passion. The last time we did that, Taylor Hicks won American Idol and we all know what happened there. I appreciate the song choice by Jimmy as it made Philip switch things up and do things differently but, aside from that, a snoozer of a performance. Rankings for Jimmy's Choice/Round #3: Joshua wins this one by a landslide while Philip falls off big time so: 1.) Joshua, 2.) Jessica, 3.) Philip I also have to say that the past two seasons Jimmy has proven why they should let him pick songs more. Between his persuading the Idols to change their minds on songs and his top 3 selections the past two seasons, he's done some great things and he usually causes the contestants to up their games and even take risks and switch things up. I like that and want him to have more influence. Record execs like Jimmy and Simon make for much better judges/mentors because of their ability to pick songs and arrangements that work within the confines of the competition and create moments. Simon has shown how good he is and Jimmy has as well. Ok, so, if I were choosing who goes to the finale and who should go home I would send Philip home (even though he's been better the last 2 weeks) and send Joshua and Jessica through. Joshua and Jessica have had more moments and fantastic performances this season and have been far more consistent. Plus, they are the best singers left and singing comes before pretty much everything. However, I'm not naive. I know Philip is a lock to make this finale. The last chance to pick him off was top 5 week with his awful week. So, it comes down to Jessica and Joshua...who do I think goes? I actually think Joshua will go. I've always felt Jessica may get the "Melinda Doolittle" ouster during top 3 but I don't think so now. I don't think Joshua has the fanbase she has and even if they are splitting votes like I think they are, Jessica's fans probably skew younger so I think they will vote more heavily. Joshua has also been bottom 3 twice to Jessica's one time (that we know of) and I still think he will face more rebellion from fans than Jessica because of all the standing ovations. He did have an off night too despite the last performance. Lots of factors in play here, including the "girl" factor. Lots of people want a girl to win for a change so that push could be huge too. Now, before West Coast voting opened, Dialidol had Philip in green and completely safe and Jessica way behind in third (no one was in red, as in being predicted to go home though). Now, the West Coast has been good to Jessica (she's from California) and they once again have come through for her. It's a virtual tie between Jessica and Joshua and, if it comes down to them two, as I said I think her younger fanbase will likely pull her through (she will likely get more text and online votes). I think it's also interesting that Philip went from green back to yellow so he's no longer predicted to be safe. You don't usually see that happen so it makes for some interesting results. Here's the link so you can all check the DialIdol predictions out for yourselves: Dialidol Top 3 Predictions Edited by PhoenixRising05, May 17 2012, 01:33 AM.

This Ice Age stuff with Jennifer and the Idols is cute and cool. Nice filler. I guess they messed up. Holly is in this Ice Age stuff. Clearly, should've aired last week. I hate they showed the homecoming stuff last night. It always makes the results show less tension-filled. Now we get tons of filler and live guest performances. I prefer more focus on the contestants at this stage. Lisa Marie looks great! |

So, Jimmy just admitted he messed up his song choices to Joshua and Jessica?! Maybe he needs to think things through more. I thought the songs were fine although he's right in that Jessica had more difficulty because she was the only person singing the song. I hate that the song choices messed up the two most talented singers in the competition. Ugh. |

Love that Jimmy said what he did about Philip's second performance. He's totally right! Still don't get the appeal of Philip's third performance. I didn't hear any of the impressive notes Jimmy claims Philips hit. I do agree that he seems to be connecting more and is more interested/trying more now. Randy needs to shut it.
