I don't understand what everybody has against white guys with guitars. Would it be better if he were a black guy with a guitar? I'm just askin'.
As usual, the point of the argument to the WGWG is conveniently missed. It's not that people have a problem with WGWG, it's that they have a problem with the REPETITION of this particular type of contestant. The one they have heading into the finale would equal 5 in a row if he wins. People are looking for a switch on a show that used to operate more on variety than they do now. And sure, a black guy with guitar would be fine but do you honestly think that anyone would tolerate watching 5 of them winning this show in a row? Not a chance in hell!
Well said, thank you.

It's like when they kept having powerful-voiced black female singers who would make it to around Top 4. It got tiring, the same slot, the same style. It wasn't fresh or...when I consider the market it wasn't even that great.

It's the same for me with WGWG. Just...enough already!

Sometimes the "friends" vote thing works if the singers have similar styles and fans were splitting supporting two people. Since AI barely focused on the friendships this season it would be less of a factor.

I agree that there are types on AI, and while I like WGWG, it is weird how they have won four years in a row. Scotty was a variation as at least he does country, but I like a bit of variation. I just would like a girl to win, though I don't care for Jessica's personality for whatever reason.

I found it frustrating that the home visits were on a voting episode. Those reels when outstanding could tip the scales and they have *nothing* to do with singing.

I don't care who won any other season. I vote for who I like that season.

The guys that won recently just happened to be white and can play a guitar. They do not have the same voice, style, personality, etc. I don't get the big deal. Would Colton winning be different just because he plays a piano and not a guitar? He is still a goodlooking white guy!

I don't see them as that distinct from one another. But, that's just my take.

I don't see anything different about any of them either.

It's obvious there is a majority voting for the same bland, cookie-cutter type of contestant. Luckily I realized this years ago and stopped watching. I love though that I and others predicted PhilipX2 would win back in January and looky, there he is final two. this show and America is too damn predictable.

I miss the days of Idol when we actually had a variety of winners. Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia, Carrie, that old guy with the gray hair ;) ....those were the days.

If a third Black Guy with No Hair wins The Voice next year, I'll stop watching that show as well.

For me out of all the guys who have won from 2008-2011,David Cook was the best, then again I am a tad bias.

I don't see how David Cook, Kris Allen, and Scotty are the same. They don't have the same "sound" at all.

I can see comparing Lee to David a little bit, but he isn't nearly as good. The season Lee won just wasn't that great of a group though.

I think the problem with some of the females is a shitty personality. Katharine McPhee was clearly a better singer than Taylor, but he had charm, was funny, and was entertaining. I thought she was bitchy (I don't mind he now though).

I was a Jessica fan in the beginning. Now, I don't find her likeable at all. The alter ego thing didn't help. The rest of the contestants don't see that close to her either. I also think she peeked too early. For me, "I Will Always Love You" was her best performance. Since then she has been hit and miss. Not as great as the judges made her out to be. I hated when she did 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. She doesn't have the voice for that at all.

My favorites of the girls this season were Hollie and Elise. I would have liked to have seen either of them make it to the finale. Elise had some bad song choices and Hollie was screwed over by the judges quit a bit.

Wow, this thread is jumping! Nice to see some discussion in here!

Someone (I think it was Px) mentioned something about the results this season being suspect. Clearly, this show manipulates in alot of ways but I can't see them messing with the voting AT ALL. if they did, the results would've been vastly different at times this season (as well as in past seasons).

Now, as for the whole Philip thing, here's my issue. He's just frustrating. He has talent but, to me, he's just a slightly better Lee Dewyze. Much like Lee, I feel like he could've cared less that he was in the competition and, like Lee, he finally changed his perspective toward the end of the season and started wanting to be around. The past two weeks, Philip began to try. In that homecoming package this week, he got emotional and you can see he's more connected and interested. If he had been that way all season, I could've tolerated him more. Instead, much like Lee, he simply coasted through doing the same things week after week and even went through a stretch where he gave like 3 awful performances in a row. Now, during Lee's season, there wasn't as much talent around him but, this season, you have so much talent so the fact he lasted over so many others when he had a horrible stretch of performances perfectly epitomizes the problem this show is facing. He has a fanbase that will vote for him no matter what and that's fine except much more talented performers are paying the price. It's the same as Scotty last year. He did the same thing week after week. He never went and tried something else. He coasted due to his fanbase and having country fans too. Meanwhile, talented performers like James Durbin, Pia Toscano, and Haley Rhinehart paid the price as did Lauren Alaina as well. All were more versatile and more talented yet they all fell victim to what was, essentially, a fanbase-driven victory. That is what you have here too. I'm not going to lump David, Kris, Lee, Scotty, and Philip in together because there are differences. Dacid and Kris took risks and changed it up ALOT. They tried and worked hard on the show week after week. The other three IMO haven't. David is more of a rocker, Kris is strictly pop, and Scotty is country. Lee and Philip are the only two really similar, which is why I know Philip won't sell and that adds to my frustration. I think I could at least justify his win to myself if I felt he could sell. Last year, when Scotty won, I knew he would sell because he's country so I could justify it. This season, there is no way too because we've seen this before.

So, that is my issue with this. It's all so predictable and that is the problem. If Philip wins, it just further exasperates a problem the show has with young girls bloc voting and also increases the predictability. As soon as Philip turned up at the auditions, you saw people immediately declare him the winner, knowing full well what would happen. This can't keep happening because it's hurting the show. If he wins, how many people will even want to invest next season when the chances of someone winning outside of the kind of winners we've seen the last 5 seasons are slim to none? I think that is a big reason why the ratings have struggled this year. Most have seen this result coming and they already know what is likely to happen Tuesday night. Jessica could blow people away and she would still need a miracle. That's the issue. People are entitled to like who they like but, to me, he's a bar/lounge singer that is a dime a dozen who will get dropped by the record label about 2 years after he wins.

I will give Philip kudos because he's been better the last two weeks. His performance of "Volcano" was great and, to me, was the one performance this season where I saw some of the magic people keep talking about with him but, outside of that, I've seen nothing. I still don't get the praise for his final performance Wednesday night when the vocal had no variation at all. It was flat to me. I also give him credit for battling through illness because it's clear he's in alot of pain. It's just frustrating and it sucks he has to bare the brunt of people's frustration because of past seasons but you can't blame people for being upset and wanting a change of pace. What's happened with him is so repetitive and predictable.

Anyway, I just hope for a good finale. I will be the first to admit I'm wrong if he shows me something. I've given him kudos when I felt he deserved praise. We'll see. I'm hoping for Jessica but she really does need a miracle. I would've loved seeing Hollie, Skylar, or Elise there too. I liked Colton but I wouldn't want him in the finale with Philip there. I would have the same issues with him as I do Philip still being around although I felt he took more risks and had more good performances.

Sadly, I will be out of town for the week so I won't be here to live post or comment until I return. I'll see if I can check in and comment but I highly doubt it. My schedule will probably be too tight.

Agreed. I think the "friends" angle didn't play into voting for that reason. They didn't focus on it all until late in the season this year.

Agree on everything else too. The home visits should've been on the results show like always. It really helps ease the tension and makes it the best results show of the year aside from the finale. Plus, it makes it go by faster. The performance show could've been 90 minutes and the home visits should've aired on Thursday night. Terrible decision.

Excellent analysis Phoenix as always. I hate that both David and Kris get lumped into the whole WGWG because they were both different compared to Lee, Scotty and Philip. What irritates me about the last three is that they did the same thing week after week and were praised for it and told how fabulous it was. I am sure that has a lot to do with them not changing. It seems their strategy was if it ain't broke don't fix it. David is just more of an overall artist and seemed to enjoy trying to do something different each week. Kris was also forced to do different things in order to compete with Adam and the over praising of Danny Gokey.

I know for me when I watch this show I feel like everyone of the contestants are pretty much staying in their comfort zone. But I also know that is very hard for me to watch and see that contestants are moving out of comfort zone because every performance is produced like each person is already a mega star performing in a football stadium. The lights, back ground singers, band on the stage, choirs is just too much. Go back to the early seasons when all it was about was the singer. Kelly, Clay, Ruben, Fantasia, etc didn't need the huge production to win over fans. Sure there were times where they had the extra things, but it wasn't every single week. For me, AI has just lost the charm it had those early seasons.

I wish when it got to the final four they allowed them to perform all their songs together. Give each contestant a 15-20 minute segment (especially since they are set on this 2 hour performance show) and they can perform 3 songs. I think it would give you a better picture what a concert by that particular contestant would be like. You could still have the double themes but it would caused contestants to think about the songs they chose. They couldn't get away with just singing a bunch of ballads because those are their strong points.

If Phillip didn't care about the competition he would have left by now. He needs surgery. He is putting this before that. He is going to miss part of the tour because of it.

The thing is, it doesn't really matter who wins. Most of the time the top 3 or 4 (and others too) get a record deal anyway. They just don't get the title.

Lauren. She made a video where she was kind of...skanky. Not skanky in the wider pop music world, but given her image on the show it seemed a bit of a desperate put-on. Pretty sure the song was called Georgia Peaches or something like that. I saw it on an airplane blended into advertisements (like they have before movies, they have them on Jetblue and probably other airlines).

Yeah that definitely is different than the image that was created on American Idol. Reminds me of early Britney Spears with a country twist, innocent with a sexy twist.

The last I saw of Lauren, she sang for the president, so not so bad. I think Scotty and Lauren will have country music careers. I want Phillip to win just so Jessica can lose I am so over all the hype and the praise by the judges that it turned me off of her.

Haley is just overrated, she thinks she is all that and she has an ego the size of China. I saw her performances on idol and I was like wtf. During Lee seasons, the whole show was lackluster. Even this season I am barely paying attention. I am so turn off by Jimmy, it seem like they need Jimmy to be Simon Cowell and be the mean one. That is why you have three judges to make constructive criticism not to have some contestant just contestant praises like they walk on water. Cough cough Jessica and more cough.

I agree, Scotty has been doing well in the country music scene and I have seen his video played a lot in the country music channel. As for Haley, nobody can pay me to listen to her crap.
