Yeah, Jennifer and Steven could find people who can sing. But they never seemed to figure out coaching with criticism, imho, from what I've seen of them (I'll never forget them complimenting Scotty for hitting a fifth note and not just talking his way through an entire song). Simon actually has a specialized skill it seems. I give it to Haley for creating a new type- the bitchy bluesy one. That Elise chick benefitted a little from her. Someone next year should be able to perfect the formula, I think. It's a tough one. |

Can't believe NO comments on IDOL tonight! WOW! Great Final 2, really entertaining. Loved Phillip's single "Home". Jessica's was better than what the judges' were saying however. I pick Phillip for the win! |

I liked both songs, but was so happy Phillip made a song his own without it being the typical coronation/beauty pageant song that has been in the past.I did vote for both though. |

I said it too. I wonder if we had the same reasons. Listened to the clips online and...it was just kind of OK-sounding. Jessica doesn't have a very original sound some of the time. Not that Phillip does either, imho. They're both kind of generic to me. I need Phoenix to break it down for me and help me see it. 'Cause based on what I heard...meh. It didn't sound like a very strong final 2. |

Not necessarily. He's under contract and doesn't want to lose this opportunity. He wants to play music. I just think he hated doing it in the Idol format. And it does matter who wins for THE SHOW. This show can't keep having winners like Phillip Philips. They NEED different winners and they NEED female winners. Also, they need to stop allowing little girls who can text 500 times a person to influence the show as much as they do. It's time to put restrictions on the voting. I also think they should allow for more "a capella" like song choices. That would weed out those who use instruments and background singers as a crutch and it wouldn't allow someone like Philip to get to the finale. Anyway, I had some time during my trip to chime in so thought I would briefly. Watched the finale. HATED it. Worst Idol finale ever. It had no EMOTION at all. None. The cloest was Jessica's "The Prayer" performance. First off, The Jason Derulo thing NEEDED to air last night. I hated when they did this last year too. The finale is about the contestants. I hate when "The Voice" does this too. It takes too much attention away and fills too much time. As horrible as the judges have been, I want to hear their feedback so not hearing them aside from a little bit here and there and the third performance is not right. Awful. Good performance but it's for tomorrow night, not tonight. This needs to change. I felt nothing for the packages detailing the Idol journeys. The show did an AWFUL job this season making the audience feel for anyone but their favorites. Both singles sucked but Jessica's was at least current. I've seen people mention how Philip's was a combo of Mumsford & Sons and Coldplay. I didn't get that and, even if it was, no way is that getting mainstream air play or much airplay at all. That song was a joke. The whole thing was. A marching band? REALLY?! On the Idol finale? And the judge's continue with the undeserved standing ovations. How does that last Philip performance get one? APPALLING. Then again, the judges have done shit like that all year. Also, did anyone see how pissed Jimmy looked at the end of the performance of his single? He clearly knew he messed up on Jessica's song and that Philip won. He knew Jessica needed a HUGE night and that didn't happen. Hey, Jimmy...this is what happens when you allow someone like this to make top 12 and then you praise him like he's a musical genius. You can't act disgusted now. You and the judges reap what you sow now. I do agree with Randy and Jlo in that Jessica won round 1. Simon Fuller definitely picked the better song for her. It was predictable with the Whitney song but you have to do what works. Aside from a bum note at the start, she did well. Philip's song choice suited him but the arrangement took the life out of it. I get he likes to switch it up but he needs to learn to leave songs alone sometimes. He may have done better if he had on "Stand By Me." I thought Jessica and Philip both did really well on their second performances. I was so happy Jessica chose "The Prayer." Most thought her "I'll Always Love You" was her best but, to me, this was her best and the best Idol performance of the season when she sang it to make top 24. Tonight, it wasn't as good as the first time but it was still damn good and gave us a near emotional moment. Great vocal. I liked Philip's choice too. "Volcano" was his best performance of the season IMO but it's too soon IMO to sing it again so this worked and he did better singing "That's All" than he did the first time. It had far more energy to it and singing it amidst Jessica's ballads made it even more vibrant. I even thought Philip showed a bit of vocal range so, giving credit where it's due, he did good here. I think Jessica beat him by a little bit given she picked the song she OWNED on this season. I already mentioned how much the singles sucked. Poor Jessica did get saddled with the worst of the two. The funny thing is I felt they were out to sabotage Philip given how they clearly wanted him out a few weeks ago and how Simon Fuller set him up for failure on his first song tonight. I was thinking this would be Cook/Archuleta II with the judges overpraising Philip, which they did, and basically behaving as if he won the night by a landslide, which they did, so his fans get complacent and Jessica's fans go crazy voting for her. I was expecting that to be the plan tonight but it clearly went south, assuming it was the plan, when Jessica got that shitty single. The studio version sounds better though. She sang it well and it does sort of suit her but it didn't really give her a moment. She needed a miracle, 3 strong and momentous performances, and her fans to vote like crazy and we know she didn't get the 3 huge performances. Philip's single was awful and I thought his singing was hideous, as was the whole deal with the marching band. Terrible, as was the judges fawning over it. The crowd didn't even seem into it. Just a lackluster finale. No emotion. No moments. Where was that big performance that makes you get teary-eyed? Where were the contestants' tears and emotional connection with their first singles? Where was that classic Idol finale moment? Now, when Philip wins tomorrow, we have to listen to him sing that song with confetti raining down and pyro going off while a marching band roams around? This is worse than Lee Dewyze!! To be fair, Jessica's song would've been horrible for an Idol coronation moment too but Philip's is worse with the marching band and feel of the song. At least Jessica's has power vocals. Not even Scotty singing the "elimination song" from this season did anything for me. The whole night was "off" emotionally. This show needs major changes. I'm still hoping for a Jessica victory but I expect Philip to win, just like I have since top 5. That was the week to pick him off and it didn't happen. Still looking forward to tomorrow night, as I always am, because of the guest performances and contestants performing with their idols and seeing everyone from the season come back is always fun. I know tomorrow will still pack a punch and, even when Philip wins, it should still have some emotion to it given how hard he's fought. I give him all the credit in the world for fighting through. Kudos. I just think he will go down as one of the worst winners ever and will do just as bad, if not worse, than Lee. If I'm wrong, I'll gladly admit it but I don't see that happening. Dialidol is not predicting a winner outright but there have been years when that happened and the lowest vote getter went home still so I think they have it right. Philip will win. Jessica's West Coast support has helped her once again though and she likely gets lots of text and online support like Philip does so it could end up being closer than the past few finales. I won't be able to comment on tomorrow night's finale most likely until I get back from my trip so, sadly, you'll have to wait until late Sunday night or Monday before I can rant and rave about the grand finale tomorrow and Philip winning (since it's obvious he will). I'm sure you'll will be very anxious to read another lengthy post from me  . |

Honestly, I don't expect to ever hear anyone sound "original." It's kind of like TV, film, etc. Everything's been done. Voices/sounds/styles can always be compared to someone or something else. To me, it's all about commericialism. Will you sell? Country sells. Over the top sells. Those are just a few examples. Philip is just not one who can sell. I'm not convinced Jessica can either anymore but she stands a better shot given she can market her as pop. With enough promotion behind her and the right record, you could make her a mild success. This show's best chance at a superstar winner will always be a country artist unless someone extraordinary comes along. Adam Lambert was their last opportunity at having a huge potential superstar winner. After him, there hasn't been anyone from outside country that has ended up standing a chance at being something big. This finale would've been so much better and exciting if people like Colton, Skylar, Elise, Hollie, or Joshua were in it. I like Jessica but I'm even thinking she didn't belong. Both her and Philip just aren't current like those I mentioned. I mean, last year we had two country artists but Lauren had that emotional song she performed to her mother, which gave us a moment. Even Scotty's song had emotion to it. I thought Scotty was a one trick pony all last season but he was even more exciting and I felt far more for him in the finale. This finale just fell completely flat. |

I get what you're saying about everything being done but then...I listen to Kelly Clarkson, y'know? She had a clearly distinct voice (increasingly so as time goes on). Ruben was very Vandross but still came off authentic with it, imho. Same with Fantasia and her Macy Gray kinda thing. Carrie- again, to she does sound kind of distinctly her. Same with Jordin Sparks. David Cook...not a big fan but I'd still say he was unique within his genre, in a season full of people with great unique voices. And then it just kind of slides downhill. So these two for me- especially Jessica- there are moments where it comes off like mimicry, imho, and she's totally indistinguishable from others. Who knows though. Maybe it was a lack of emotion I'm noticing and not really the quality/tone of the vocal. One thing about future prospects- I think Jessica's probably going to wind up with an overproduced single, singing over a dance track (something like Rihanna). They should have gone that route with her now. I wonder if she can dance. |

I really like Phillip Home's song, drummers and all. It was unique and different. He reminds me of Paul McDonald he was quirky and unique. I am not so much inerested in cookie cutter singers or singers that autotune or lip sync. |

I would say... Round 1: Jessica, no question. Round 2: A total wash. I thought they were both boring and forgettable. Round 3. Jessica bombed. Philip SHINED! Night as a whole: Philip. |

I have just watched the show and I loved Philip's performances in all three rounds and his last song was fabulous and heartfelt. I think Jessica is a very talented young lady but for some reason I can't shake off teh feeling she is a tad "over manufactured" and I cannot connect to any of the songs she sings. I like how Phil knows what he wants and stays true to himself. I predict Philip for the win plus as a fan of his I hope he does win. |

Wow, brutal finale...both are so incredibly mediocre its not even funny. American Idol has fallen so far. I hope JLo and Steven are out next season...this show needs a total overhaul top to bottom. |

Phillip is NOT the typical guy teen girls like. One the type of singing he does isn't like Scotty McCreery, David Archuleta or Kris Allen for that matter. Two, he's a blues rock guy. And yes he's VERY DIFFERENT than anyone ever in the finals! |
