SOD: Rafe and Carrie Grow Closer; 1/31/12

If the writers were handling this with any kind of finesse, they would show Rafe and Carrie being attracted to each other, but then deciding firmly to back off and not act on those feelings. We would see them each making renewed efforts to spend more time with their spouses.

Then Sami's secret would come out -- devastating Rafe. Shortly thereafter, the Austin/Abby thing would cause a rift between Carrie and Austin (even if it's based only on appearances). Both extremely unhappy, Carrie and Rafe would turn to each other for comfort and at last spend the night together. The next morning, they both would regret what they had done, realize they still love their spouses, and agree to never reveal what happened. Of course, that would be the same night that Austin is murdered. And the only alibi each would have would be each other.

Oh, wait, that might be considered a "classic soap moment," so it won't happen.

Now that storyline has possibilities, fits more with the characters, and is soapy, which is why these writers won't give it to us.

Really like that senario....plausible and true soap! Unfortunately, it'll never happen on this soap, with these writers!!! :shame:

I haven't read through this thread, so maybe it's been discussed but the thing is -

Rafe was originally written as a "good guy". He came on as an FBI agent with a secret past, but they never wrote him as the "bad guy" or "evil." So I could understand why he was taken with Sami and "accepted" her for awhile. I guess he figured maybe she'd change.

But Sami is Sami. I can't imagine that Rafe would have put up with that side of her personality forever. So, yes, at the beginning he was fine with it. But as many of her past lovers did, he was going to leave her anyway because he can't handle Sami for Sami - at least not for the long haul.

Besides, when Sami and Rafe were in the getting to know you phase, no way was she being herself. She's been so OOC for most of that relationship, it's ridiculous! Only recently do I see flashes of the old Sami (the scheming, immature liar that I happen to love hating) and now Rafe is high tailing it out of there.

Thanks for posting!

I do understand your point but IMO Sami was still lying scheming ie hiding her pregnancy and she shot a man all of which Rafe was apart of participated in actively and accepted. So for these PTB to now write that he is bothered by her scheming with Mad is OOC to push the plot that is CAFE getting together to lessen what Sami did. One of their first scenes in the SAFE house was Rafe finding that Sami drugged Hilda with sleeping pills. All of which is what "the old" Sami does. Not to menton lying ie the note during the Sydnapping and not telling Rafe. IMO Sami didn't change she matured after dealing with so much grief ie Grace's death Johnny's Cancer etc That has to change a person no one past character is the same from when they first came on. The problem though is they had to write ALL the characters especially Sami and Rafe OOC to accomplish a mundane plot point that will again lead to sister vs sister. All of Sami's men had a problem with her lying to THEM but even after huge lies and decit they come crawling back because ultimately ALL her stories are not about them but her. The men are merely puppets in HER story. She may fuck up but they always forgive and want her back. Brandon did, Lucas did and will again, EJ did ,Austin did, and Rafe will want her back eventually too. regardless of what happens with CAFE because the trouble maker is who he fell in love with. Something he admitted after realizing he was wrongly trying to change her because then she wouldn't be the Sami he fell for. Anything Rafe says in the future is OOC but it's all to push the plot and nothing more. Sooner or later though the tide will turn and everything will be about Sami because her men are attached to primarily her until they leave or are written out and NEVER given successful relationships with EJOLE being the exception for EJ. And of course Carrie for Austin but only because CAUSTIN were the rooting couple and Sami the interloper.

I haven't seen Rafe have a gleam in his eye like he has when he looks at Carrie the ENTIRE time he has been with Sami. I like him for the first time on Days, reminds me of when I adored Luis when he was with Sheridan.

I'll add that the major changes to Sami's personality were written as being the result of losing Grace and her guilt. The scenes in the hospital chapel and later at the penthouse clearly showed that she felt that she was being punished for all of her conniving ways. Even the naivety that followed in regards to both Nicole and EJ were the result of her needing to be forgiven as well as forgive.

Yep and Ali brought this up in an interview at the time as well. That Sami is forever changed because of the death of Grace. On a side note I was VERY surprised these PTB even had Sami bring up Grace in her exchange with Marlena. It's nice to know she is not forgotten as she was more than what the past PTB used her for which was a plot point. Just another note on Sami's scheming in the past she schemed to get a man but since meeting Rafe has been happy and in love and he with her. So she no longer schemed for love but I have no doubt that they will have Sami scheme and fight for her love now that they are doing sister vs sister AGAIN. As you can tell I am less than excited about that because it was so unnecessary of the PTB to do what they have done since the reset and on MericP point that Rafe is a goody goody good guy that characterization is false when he was a very troubled and rebellious teen who the nun sister Agnes straightened out and he has been shown to break the rules and to seek justice for those he loves. So while foundamentally a good guy he would do anything for those he loves and to get to the truth and in all honesty I wish the angst for SAFE Was coming from his past then a over done tierd plot of sister vs sister only this time with Sami's man who loves her more than he will Carrie.Carrrie has after all been the main inctigator of their "moments" even trying to talk badly of Sami while fishing for info and snd being none to pleased that he defended her. But bottom line he loves her for better or worse and Carrie is now I think envious of that with how they are playing it and her marriage crumbling almost since stepping foot in Salem.

I never saw Rafe as a goody goody either. I always thought the reason he got Sami's number so well was because he'd been there. It took him all of two minutes to figure out what was going on when he walked on her prank on Hilda and when written in character he was never duped for long by her pranks or lies.

Yep but now to suit the plot he is simply spending all his time with Carrie so they "grow closer" :eyeroll: While for Sami they use the work excuse.

It's hard to determine 'when written in character' is in regard to Rafe - he's not been on canvas long enough to state one way or the other what his character should be. My impression is the longer he's stayed around the more determined TPTB have been to paint him as the ultimate do gooder...the heroeyist hero that ever heroed. And where Sami's concerned he's never been given much of a challenge - he's never been on the receiving end of one of Sami's truly deceptive schemes. He's watched her hurt other people but it's never been aimed at him.

On a side note I was VERY surprised these PTB even had Sami bring up Grace in her exchange with Marlena. It's nice to know shje is not forgotten as she was more than what the past PTB used her for which was a plot point. Just another note on Sami's scheming in the past she schemed to get a man but since meeting Rafe has been happy and in love and he with her. So she no longer schemed for love but I have no doubt that they will have Sami scheme and fight for her love now that they are doing sistervs sister AGAIN. As you can tell I am less than excited about that because it was so unnecessary of the PTB to do what they have done since the reset and on MrticP popint that Rafe is a goody goody good guy that characterization is false when he was a very troubled and rebellious teen who the sister Agnes straightened out and he has been shown to break the rules to seek justice for those he loves. So while foundamentally a good guy he would do anything for those he loves and to get to the truth and in all honesty I with the angst for SAFE Was coming from his past then a over done tierd plot of sister vs sister only this time with Sami's man who loves her more than he will Carrie.Carrrie has after all been the main inciator of their "moments" even trying to talk badly of Sami while fishing for info and snd being none to pleased that he defended her.
While over three years can be considered a drop in the bucket in the duration of a show that's been on over four decades IMO its is long enough to determine a character's traits. However, I will concede that for whatever reason full development of his history has been started and stopped enough for us not to have a clear picture of his past. Dropping the Emily story was a major disappointment, as was not following through on the history that the nuns eluded to. As for never being on the end of Sami's wrath, the initial and continued point of the character up until now has been that "as written," he's always seen through her and eventually accepted her flaws and all. She gave up on trying to deceive and con him because 1. her attempts never worked and 2. In the end she didn't need to because he always came back to her on his own. As for not being challenged by Sami the fact is that while he hasn't been the object of her schemes, he's been the object of her wrath at the very times when he's been trying to help and do what's best for her, which could be considered to be a bigger challenge.

I think it's fairly obvious that one set of writers were portraying Rafe's character one way and now you have new writers coming in changing those personality traits to fit the plot they want to push forward. My problem is that this is an unimaginative, dull route to take. It's no wonder MarDar can't hold viewers attention. There is nothing exciting here to watch. Forced laughter and patting each other on the back continuously don't sell this pair as a couple. The ridiculous ice melting moment taken right off late night porn was an embarrassingly failed attempt to persuade viewers to buy what they are determined to feed us. The horrendous musical score was just an added insult. I want something compelling! That's what they promised us with the reset. A grade-school child could write this weak-ass shit. Now I have to suffer through more of the same until the OMG moment for the shocking sweeps stunt that everyone saw coming.

This pair are screaming for a crazy twist added in to help capture our attention because right now there is nothing clever here. Days isn't going to advance in the ratings by trying to sell this boring match.

I haven't seen Rafe have a gleam in his eye like he has when he looks at Carrie the ENTIRE time he has been with Sami. I like him for the first time on Days, reminds me of when I adored Luis when he was with Sheridan.
Yep.

It's so weird liking Galen Gering in a pairing again it seems like we've been subjected to SAFE so long.

carrie doesnt deserve rafe.
No but she ALWAYS did have the wandering eye so she deserves EVERYTHING She gets for going after a married man I am not condoning what Sami did. I don't feel sorry for Sami or her but Sami has been trying to put the past in the past where Carrie is pretending and trying to get Rafe to bash his wife not realizing that and not liking that he wont After being used to being the favoured sister and she hates that Sami has for once what she and Austin lack. I also think this is another bit of Karma yet AGAIN for Carrie to dish out but it will not last and if anything Rafe will do something because of his hurt with Carrie or like I still think cheat before hand to have SAFE on an even playing field. The fighting like little girls is old and tierd plot. It just goes to show that Sami and Carrie are more alike than they like to think re the same taste in men. Hence why they will never get along .I bet the IIC think they are so brilliant with this "new" cough old cough story. If it wasn't for Will and Marlena this "story" would suck even more. I hope they rectify this and fast.

I don't really see the need for Cafe at all, other than to write in Rafe's exit. He's been hired/created to replace Lucas, and now the original is back. He's been likened to Austin too in some of the interviews, but the original is back also. The super duper dynamic duo (Bo and Hope) are back together on the force as the lead investigators of Salem's PD. There simply isn't any purpose for Rafe on the canvas now. If Austin gets killed off, then I can see Rafe leaving to Switzerland with Carrie.

Now if they'll start a triangle between Safe and Lumi, I would think most people would find it boring. Not to mention that more than likely, Rafe would win - not only because KC (or his wife as rumor has it) has an unhealty obsession with GG, but realistically Sami would have outgrown Lucas whom she's known and has had an on and off relationship since she was a teenager. In which case we could end up with Safe, and possibly Lucas and Carrie, since Sami has always been Lucas' second choice, and Carrie "the one" he always wanted. None of these scenarious would make ME happy, anyways.

I never bought this argument that Rafe is a "Lucas replacement". Lucas is Lucas and Rafe is Rafe. That's it and I doubt GG is going anywhere. I see SC leaving before anyone else They tested him with the most women and it never works.. The last regime simply didn't care to write for Lucas In any capacity way before Rafe EVER showed up. Whether SAFE is together or not these PTB like Rafe like they do EJ and Lucas there is plenty of room for all three without being up Sami's ass. This show will be cancelled soon anyway and I don't see them risking losing any of her bases so they will toy with everyone who is invested in a Sami pairing until the end which will be soon at the rate their going. Also we wont know how "boring" or not a SAFELUMI tri will be if not done and I do see them going there with a side of EJ because EVERYTHING leads back to Sami for these men and triangles like dDH is all the IIC know how to write. They also LOVE caustin and were the ones that brought them back. No way will they have Carrie end up with anyone but Austin in the end. If this show had more time and if CC chose to leave like in 99 I would find Carrie going off with Rafe more plausible but even when she did with Mike when CC returned it was all about Caustin.
