SOW: Abigail's Big Career Move; 1/31 Issue

Abigail begins her first day as a Mad World Cosmetics intern and is astounded by Madison's plans for her.

Madison takes Abigail to Quinn's spa and announces that she wants her to be the face of Mad World, along with ex-friend Melanie. "I think Abigail is excited about the opportunity to model, but to do it with Melanie is such a double-edged sword" expresses Kate Mansi. Madison advises Abigail and Melanie to think seriously about her offer before accepting.

Abigail and Melanie confer and admit that they do miss each other. "Abigail has to swallow her pride and listen to her friend," voices Mansi. "She has to realize that Melanie is a good person and that she didn't mean to hurt her. Otherwise, Abigail has to say good-bye to the whole idea of modeling."

The chance to work as a model is empowering for Abigail. "The part of it that is so enticing to Abigail involves Austin," explains Mansi. "Every girl would like to say to the guy that they're interested in 'Yeah, I'm a model.' It means that people are interested in Abigail, and that she is attractive. Abigail thinks, 'If I'm a model, maybe then Austin will notice me."

Abigail fantasizes about telling Austin that she's a model and imagines him responding with a kiss. Excited to share her news, Abigail meets with Austin. But he bursts Abigail's bubble when he bluntly asks if she has gotten her parents' permission. "She wants him to see her as a woman, but, instead, Austin sees her as someone who needs her parents' permission to have a career," groans Mansi. "It's a huge disappoinment."

Austin sense Abigail's hurt and apologizes. A determined Abigail resolves to change Austin's mind about her.

:headbang: Why can't anyone hate Melanie without suffering or being axed? Lame, lame, lame. And why would Abigail need her parents permission to model? Isn't she over 18? 20?

I think that's exactly the point. Technically, she doesn't need their permission as she is (as far as we know, pending the usual Salem time shifts) legally an adult, but in Austin's eyes, she's still very young. He doesn't see her as a real grown-up.

There really are no fucking words as to why nobody is allowed to hate Melanie, no matter how deserved that hatred is.

As for this little gem:

I think whoever wrote this is unclear on the meaning of empowering. A job whose only requirement is fitting a certain look* is not exactly empowering. Modeling by nature requires nothing other than looking good (and being quite a bit taller than Abigail, but never mind that). I would find it more empowering if Abigail got a job that required her to use her mind, and I'd think Austin the newly-minted forensic accountant might find that more interesting too. However, what I do like about this story is that what Abigail hopes and thinks Austin wants really isn't, at least, so far.

*Back when Janeane Garafalo used to be funny (yes, kids, there once was such a time), she had a bit in a routine about how eyerolling it is when the mags come out with their "this season, 'pretty' is in! . . . as opposed to last season, when ugly girls ruled the roost." Or words to that effect.

This is kind of a shame. Abigail should at least get to fuck with Melanie during the modeling stuff, imho. Make her look like a dumbass, something. This would be a nice moment to introduce some scheming.

And to think I thought Abigail had potential. I could have warmed to a brainy, Lois-Lane type Abigail wanting to impress an older man with her journalistic savvy and academic accomplishments. Much like her mother in the good old days. But modeling? How superficial and trite.

As for Abigail and Smellanie needing to be BFF again--proppety prop prop.

Abigail as a young Lois Lane-type would've been splendid to watch! This show has such wasted potential!

Regarding the whole modeling thing, I have no interest in this storyline, but I do think that DAYS wasted a great opportunity to incorporate Nicole into the Countess W/Mad World shenanigans. Nicole was a successful Countess W model back in the day, so I would've liked to see Kate put aside her dislike of Nicole and ask Nicole to return to modeling for the relaunch of Countess W. Meanwhile, Madison could try to poach Nicole as a model for Mad World. I'd welcome a storyline for Nicole that had her doing more than just passing time until beastsex is revealed.

And if Nicole agreed to work for Countess W, then DAYS could do some great stuff with Lucas and Nicole having to stifle their antagonism of each other in order to work together and make Countess W successful again.

I just cannot get over how Melanie is never, ever, ever allowed to be in the wrong. And anybody who doesn't like her and thinks she's a selfish twit is painted as crazy and is kicked off the show.

Melanie was WRONG. She isn't a nice person who's just a victim of circumstance. She told Chad she loved him while he was still with Abby. She kissed him repeatedly. She is a man-stealing bitch. She is NOT A VICTIM, and I am beyond sick of her martyr act.

Sounds good!

I like that Abigail and Melanie are putting Chad behind them. It's not like he's some great prize to be fighting over in the first place. Plus, I like their friendship, so it doesn't bother me at all that Abigail's swallowing her pride and taking Melanie back as a friend. I got my fix when Abigail called her out.

And I also like Austin asking if she got Jack and Jennifer's permission about modeling. It tells me that Austin isn't the creeper everyone is assuming he is in this situation. Austin does look at Abigail as young and he's unaware of her strong feelings for him. I'm loving this angle.

Pretty soon, everyone in Salem is going to be models.

That would be because he still thinks of her as a little girl. Austin knew Abby as toddler? Baby? He has been around for quite a while.
It just makes him looks dumb, he is not clueing in on Abby's crush.

Well, I guess we should have expected this. They got rid of serious places to work like the hospital (and going further back the Spectator.) So now all we have is the spa and two battling cosmetics companies. So, of course, it's all about how people look -- not whether they're being productive or contributing to the health and well-being of others.

So disappointing to see what they're doing to Abby. Just in the last couple of months, she's gone from (a) a serious journalism student who won an award to (b) a not-so-serious student who is only interested in a forensic accounting course because she's crushing on the professor to (c) someone who is completely ignoring her studies in order to pursue her inexplicable and sudden interest in the fashion business to (d) someone who is willing to sacrifice her principles (forgive Melanie after she told Marlena she never could do something like that) immediately upon being offered a modeling assignment that will allow her to impress her insta-crush.

Wow. I can practically see Abby's IQ getting lower with each passing day. Yes, young women are allowed to change their minds and try different things and make mistakes. But this is all so sudden and random.

So many of the characters on this show are random and directionless. One day they seem to be on one path and then the next they're totally jumping onto something else. Come on, writers, make up your minds! And give us a through line on these characters that makes sense!

I just hate this story arch, sorry. Abby lost a boyfriend she didn't even want anymore and is surprised, hurt that Melanie, the center of her own universe, was there to snatch him right up? Abby is all focused on getting time with a very much older, married man, and she has nerve to be a jealous ex? To judge Melanie and Chad? I pretty much dislike all three characters, especially Melanie, but I would appreciate to see Abby take a moment and try to remember that Austin is not some school boy she is interested in. She's flirting away with a man who's married and has been with the same person pretty much her entire life. Her looking over that fact just makes me really dislike Abby. Is too hard to like the younger set when they are written as so two faced.

Can we at least have a scene where Jack expresses confusion/disappointment that his supposed-to-be-smart daughter would rather be a model? Of course, that will just give everyone else another excuse to bash on Jack for being unsupportive.

Wow, I am so shocked that Abby has to "swallow her pride" and let Mel off the hook. :eyeroll:

and Abby's issue hasn't been played as her being jealous. It's a trust issue which makes perfect sense and makes me shake my head at these writers.

Go hard Gabi, go hard.

Seriously Abby has nerve. I like Melanie. Actually preferred her with Nathan, but I do not see her forcing herself on any of these men. They like her. How can that be her fault???????? Abby is being a hypocrite. Hey i like a married man but you have no right to be with the young man that I don't want. You betrayed me and all that crap. Unbelievable. I want to know if she is even thinking that she is breaking up a marriage. Come on she was better than that and good Lord not every body has to be a model. Good grief it would be so much more interesting for Chad-coffee house, Melanie-nursing, Gabby-modelling, Abby-journalist, Will-political intern. There would be so much going on and somethings can over lap. just an example. a patient comes in with a gunshot wound, which is somehow related to a story Abby is doing. So many possibilities....
