This week, DAYS merges reality with fiction when Marlena persuades Jack to attend a group therapy session that includes real-life veterans. Matthew Ashford talks with Weekly about the powerful episode.

Weekly: How does Marlena get Jack to attend her therapy session for veterans who struggle with post-traumatic stress?
Ashford: For Jack, it's totally unexpected. They meet and she tells him, "In a few minutes, there's going to be this meeting." Marlena kind of waylays him, because she knows if Jack has time to think about it, he'll disappear.

Weekly: When Jack does discover the purpose of the meeting, how does he feel about participating in a session with veterans?
Ashford: At first, Jack feels very much like an idiot. These are soldiers, military veterans who chose to serve their country, whereas Jack sort of wandered into it because he wanted a news story. What Jack discovers is a bunch of people who are damaged, just like him. These are people who are struggling to put their lives back together and Jack realizes, in that respect, he's no different.

Weekly: One of the veterans, Leslie Nicole Smith, shares a story that closely resembles her own real-life experience. Other stories are scripted, but at similar in tone. What are your feelings about this approach?
Ashford: Thanks to shows like DAYS and this storytelling, we have a chance to learn something, maybe not with our heads, but with our hearts. We don't really know much about this war because we haven't seen much of it. It's another way of taking in this huge piece of information about what war does to human beings.

Weekly: What was it like working with the veterans?
Ashford: A good many of them are interested in acting. The same thing happened after World War II, and also Vietnam. Bob Woods (ex-Bo, OLTL) and David Forsyth (ex-John, AW, ex Hogan SFT) are Vietnam vets. I worked with both of them, and I realized that they brought their experiences with them into their performances. They're both very subtle men who have a sense of humor, but they also cover up a lot of stuff, which is ideal for an actor.

Weekly: What effect does attending the session ultimately have on Jack?
Ashford: No one walks out of the session cured. They walk out of there determined to go one more day. I think Jack is a forever changed individual because of his experiences in Afghanistan. There are emotions he has been fighting to control. Maybe this will bring up emotions that have been dormant.

Wow, a storyline I actually care about which means after this one episode we won't see Jack for about two weeks and when we do it will be all about either Jennifer or Daniel.

Bring back Jack!

TFP!

I am actually looking forward to this and for once actually feel this will be good.

That last line intrigues me too. Can we dare hope Jack actually lets out some of his bottled up feelings (to one particular person ;) )

Lysie, I like your banner. So true.
Nice article. I will try to watch this episode, but I've honestly lost all interest in this show. Even Jack. He has no story line. After 4 months of being jacked around (excuse the pun), I just don't care anymore.

But I will try to watch this episode to support MA - and most importantly, our vets. But truthfully, I cannot support this show any more.

Awesome. Gotta love MA. His acting experience has given him so much insight as to what storytelling is intriguing. WHat viewers WANNA see. He looks at things from the viewers perspective. However experience to others overinflates their egos much like Ken Corday....they keep pushing what THEY want you to see because they think they know better. Now apparently Melissa Reeves is following in those footsteps with the most blatant agenda pushing I've ever seen!

Could something good actually play on this show? I hope so. I hope Jack's dormant emotions lead to some good drama. How could they not capitalize on Jack finally losing it with Jennifer and telling her how disappointing it was that he got nothing from her because she was so busy mooning over a guy she barely knows? But they have capitalized on very little that I thought they could capitalize on with this story so far.

Contrast this article with the completely shallow nature of the article about Jennifer.

Oh, good--I was hoping at least one of the soap mags would cover this story, and including an interview with MA is even better. I appreciate the insight he has into his character--yes, Jack would definitely have bolted if he'd known what was going down, so it was shrewd of Marlena not to tell him.

I hope the line about no one walking out of that session cured is foreshadowing. While I would like to see Jack reach a turning point and make a strong recovery, the storyline and the character deserve better than a quick fix. TPTB have dropped the ball on so many things up to this point, but maybe they could turn this around yet with more care and attention. And I hope one of those dormant emotions MA mentions is anger. Because I'd think Jack would have plenty of that bottled up inside of him, after a year in hell.

Jack has two opportunities for good storylines, if the writers would follow through. He could be involved with the investigative reporting on where John's money went and he could be involved in a university storyline. Both of these scenarios have been alluded to, but not followed through on. I think that both of these situations would give Jack opportunities to interact with multiple characters.

So we finally get to see Jack onscreen..and without the shrew. Matt could really turn in some great scenes if they would give him some airtime. We were promised a great story for him and have gotten crap. I would love to see Jack let loose and tell the "perfectly awesome..perfect" Jennifer off once and for all

It's a sad day when Marlena knows Jack better than his true love.

That last line sure sounds ominous to me. The only emotions that Jack has left dormant for awhile is anger. Makes me wonder if they're going to make him a little dark and then have him totally reject Jennifer. If the whole goal was to rebuild them from the ground up, the best way to do that is to have Jennifer fight to reach him again......*prays* please, please, please, please, please.....

Anger, grief, and guilt--especially survivor's guilt--would be my top guesses for Jack's repressed emotions. And I'd be glad to see a bit of "dark Jack" because if anyone has cause to turn dark for a bit, it's he. And rejecting Jennifer completely, after the way she's let him down . . . oh, yes, please. She won't know what hit her--and maybe it'll jar her head loose from its current position up Daniel's rectum.

The PTSD angle may not be getting the amount of attention it deserves, but I have to hand it to the show for going above and beyond with this episode. They didn't have to do this at all to tell Jack's story. I think these scenes are going to be pretty poweful and moving. I can't wait to see them.
