Simply put...this episode broke.my.heart. When Jack said "It doesn't feel like home." I wanted to find Jennifer and shake her into submission.

That's funny because when Jack said that I wanted to find Jennifer and kick the shit out of her ...
Who DOESN'T want to kick the shit out of Jennifer right now...I am pretty sure 99% of viewers share in that sentiment!

While I thought the support group scenes were well done, I was really bothered by it. I believe these were real vets. Seeing them have to be supportive to a ficitional character and story just seems wrong. Jack shouldn't have opened up. These people have real scars and injuries (but physical and mental), and the writing made it all about something fake.
There have (sadly) been many journalists kidnapped and tortured overseas. Jack wasn't possessed by the devil and he didn't have a chip put in his brain. I'd offer that Days did this to draw attention to the plight of those like "Jack" as well as to the situation of vets such as the actual ones featured in those scenes.
I think it may also have been to demonstrate the universality of PTSD. Anyone who's been through a life-changing trauma can suffer from it, not just military personnel--and all who suffer from it are deserving of compassion, support, and understanding. The fictional element didn't bother me--this is a daytime drama, not a documentary.
Absolutely - thank you for mentioning that.

Does a movie about a person struggling with cancer belittle the disease in real life? Does a show that features a character with HIV insult those that actually suffer with the condition? I don't think so. Fiction can shed light on issues. I'm happy to see that DAYS is doing just that--bringing some attention to a condition that not only afflicts many vets but also a wide spectrum of the population.

Another really good episode today HOWEVER that was simply because of the veterans stuff. I would've appreciated the Quinn/Madison/Melanie/Abigail stuff far more on another day, which is why I have to agree with those that said this episode should've been exclusively about the veteran stuff. They could've focused a whole episode on it by dragging out Jack and Marlena going to the session and dragging out the session itself a little bit OR they could've replaced the Quinn/Madison/Melanie/Abigail and John/Brady stuff with scenes of Abigail and Austin talking and having the conversation veer towards her family and, therefore, her father and how he's doing. They could've also had some scenes of Adrienne coming to see Jennifer out of concern for Jack and then having the two of them talk in depth about what he went through and what he's still dealing with. This would've tied the whole episode together and IMO would've made this a much stronger episode (and a superb Emmy reel although I always feel like these sorts of episodes shouldn't be just used as Emmy bait aside from the actors involved because it feels in poor taste). I felt like this was an episode where you need to focus just on the serious stuff or stuff that ties into it or it's far too jarring. Everytime the show shifted to something aside from the veteran stuff, alot of the impact was lost IMO, which is why the last segment was flawless because it focused exclusively on the veteran stuff.

I also have to agree this episode makes Jennifer AND Abigail look horrible. Probably more Jennifer than Abigail though. I mean, Abigail is young and her and her father have issues. They may have somewhat made up but I can sort of understand her avoiding him a bit. Jennifer, on the other hand, is ruined IMO. I will always recall how cold she's been in dealing with Jack. I don't need her to take him back but she should be supportive. Hell, I don't like the way she's treated Daniel either. She literally is destroyed IMO.

I thought the vets did a very good job in their scenes. I, too, was wondering why Pat got introduced later. She's very pretty and I wouldn't mind seeing her or any of the others make return visits to help Jack through this and continue to share their experiences. That final scene with Jack and Marlena was beautiful. DH and MA were phenomenal there. When Jack lost it while hugging Marlena, I started having tears well up in my ears. Just a beautiful scene that was. Dee and Matt were both great all episode and, boy, does Matt ever have his Emmy reel. This was all POWERFUL stuff. I would've never thought Days would do something like this. I only wish they had when they told the story of Philip losing his leg. I couldn't help but recall that botched story during today's episode.

I hope they continue with Jack and Marlena being friends beyond this arc and I hope we see more of them together. They're wonderful. I also can't say enough how much more I can enjoy Marlena away from John and John away from Marlena. It's amazing. Same with Jack and Jennifer. More, please!

Again, I would've appreciated the Quinn/Madison/Abigail/Melanie stuff more another day but I was still interested aside from the fact I hate how they are making Quinn this big softie now in order to redeem himself and I don't like how Melanie and Abigail were all of a sudden somewhat getting along again even before Madison entered the room with Quinn.

EM did look awful. I'm guessing they attempted to cover up a bad sunburn with makeup. I really hate that they have John in the business world. So dumb. They've completely isolated him. Why not put him back at the police department so he can interact with Bo, Hope, Roman, etc? Or, have him assist Rafe and Carrie with this business? He does owe them anyway and, again, that opens up more character interactions. Marlena is interacting with people all over the place while John is completely isolated. Stupid. The character is also pretty pointless right now. He needs a purpose and fast. I also felt the Brady/John scenes were useless. I don't mind filler but the misunderstanding was just a waste designed to give them both something to do. Why not have them out and about and meeting with investors or something? They could then come up with some disagreement stemming from that. It all felt so pointless.

Great job by Richard Culliton though. No surprise that this week has been much better and he's written two of the four episodes.

Gone, But Not Forgotten!

If Marlena's got Jack's back, I do predict that Jennifer is going to have a visit from her real soon. Since Marlena's return, she been to the Dimera's to confront Stefano about John, and EJ about Will, and to some degree, Sami about Will. Marlena is a class act and she knows how to look after her loved ones. Marlena and Jack's patient--Doctor relationship is not typical. You can see the she doesn't hesitate to cross the line with Jack. Marlena is genuinely affected by Jack's plight, and is there for him as a friend. A Marlena smackdown of Jennifer is now on the top of my list--- tied -----with Jack telling Jen how it is.

Also this needs to be said....there was something MAJORLY WRONG with Eric Martsolf's face today....either he burnt himself tanning, put WAY to much self-tanner on or the makeup dept fucked up...something was VER VERY off with him...it was very distracting...he looked AWFUL!
I noticed that too!! EM always wears too much makeup. He looks ridiculous, though nowhere as ridiculous as Dr. Orange.
LOL! Hmm, I don't think they're equal. I'd say EM beats SC at looking ridiculous by a good margin. EM's Days' look is just so very unappealing. Not only is it the copious amount of make up, but it's that combined with the bad hair (and really how can hair that short look so bad?), the Miami vice dirty looking facial scruff and fashion sense, and most ridiculous is the over sized, over bleached capped teeth that makes him look like some crazed Vegas lounge lizard when he grins. That collective mess could be excused when Brady was dark and happily drinking his life away, but now he's supposed to happy and in control of his life, and yet, he still look ridiculous.
I thought it was just me. I haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaate his Days look. It's ridic.

Maybe the Days crew just misses SC so much, that they are trying to make EM his replacement. All this instant-tan spray stuff can be fun. :teehee: :teehee:

Eh. I don't have much to say. Show was fine. I cracked up when Deidre said "stay close." I wasn't paying enough attention to FF through the Melanie scenes, but did anyone else see her kicking her feet back and forth while she was sitting on that table or whatever? Molly clearly thinks Melanie is 5 years old.

I laughed when Jack told Marlena to "cover him." LOL.

Yeah, I noticed Melanie kicking her legs too. I find it hard to believe she was once a married woman. :shame:

Thought today's episode was great (well Jack, Marlena and the Vets anyway). Very moving and I wish I could see more! I was really touched by the message at the end. Jack's story alone is captivating and moving and I still can't understand why it was pushed aside for the Oompa Loompa and Miss Prissy Whiny Pants. I know I'm not saying anything new here that nobody else has already said but geez Jennifer ticks me off!!! She used to be one of my favorite characters. One half of one of my favorite couples on DOOL and now she's lower than the amoeba that feeds on pond scum!!! Seriously! If anyone's guilty of abandoning anyone in their marriage it was her!!! She should be there for Jack, even if it's not in a romantic way. She owes him that much after all he's been through for her! Grrrr!!! Jen is going to have to take a might big tumble off her high horse (and get trampled on by said high horse) before I can ever tolerate her character again.

I understand your point of view. It can be dicey mixing real-life and fictional material. I've seen a lot of shows (both daytime and other dramas) that have tried to blend the two with varying degrees of success. There have been dramas that brought in real-life people to play themselves (in an effort to eductate the audience) and it may or may not have worked for any number of reasons, often because the real-life person is too stiff or too uncomfortable onscreen.

However, this show was different. Everyone in that room was an actor playing a part. Yes, the actors were also real-life veterans who had had their own experience with PTSD. And yes, some of their stories were (we're told) used by the writers to craft the dialogue that we saw. But the vets were not playing themselves. They were not using their real names. It's not like the show did first-person interviews that got spliced together with Jack's made-up story. (For example, the actress who played "Pat" wasn't really late because of babysitter problems. She played what was in the script.)

I also get what you mean about not wanting to see Jack "open up" and share his own story because it seems trivial compared to the real thing. But, again, in a fictional genre, this is a valuable role that professional actors, who are playing characters we already relate to, can perform. First of all, Jack heard from the others about their plight. We heard, too. And we saw Jack's reactions. During those segments, he was "us." He represented the audience reaction in how he was in awe and was humbled by these other sufferers. As he learned, we learned right along with him.

But none of the others really opened up a vein and let us in on what it was REALLY like to experience PTSD. That was Jack's job. He could do that because we don't know these other characters as well as we know Jack. By expressing his own fears and anxieties and struggles -- and having the others nod and sympathize -- we knew he was telling THEIR story. He was telling THE story of what it can be like to deal with devastating trauma and its aftermath.

As has been noted, it wasn't a documentary. It was a series of dramatized accounts used to help all of us learn and be more aware about the thousands who suffer from this condition. To me, shows like this are really a testament to the power of fiction to be able to convey the wrenching truth to a general audience in ways that other media can't do.

Me three!

The contrast between Daniel's Interminable Goodbye on Monday and Jack's Wrenching Group Therapy Session today was like night and day. From the ridiculous to the sublime. And Jennifer's being all over the former and nowhere in sight during the latter sinks her beyond redemption in my book, although I was also relieved not to be distracted by her sour face and mopey attitude.
It's easy to see now why we haven't seen this episode earlier or closer to Monday's goodbye, imagine how amazingly shallow it would have been on Monday with that crap or Tuesday following.

This episode made me cry. I knew it was going to be good because of MA and DH being amazing actors. knowing they were real vets made the episode seem more powerful. Who ever wrote the scenes for MA, DH and the Vets should become the new head writer because they seem to know how to write drama and make it work. I did not bother to watch any of the other scenes going on in the episode just seemed like nonsense compared to the scenes with Jack and the vets. So I listen to other who had already posted about the other scenes not being good. Thanks for not having me waste my time.

They also have an interesting history. They were not only stuck on Dimera's Island together but where both held in the castle after most of their loved one's went home. She was also there the moment he met his son. She talked to him a bit about his mystery terminal illness when he was "dying". I'm sure she also knows about his past with Kayla and Harper. When you add that to the mix you can understand why with Jack she can't maintain 100% doctor/patient professionalism. She knows he has been through hell before but this experience doesn't even compare to those it's almost unbearable for both of them. MA and DH are playing the heck out of this storyline and I really wish we got more of it then once a month.

I read the subtext with Marlena today loud and clear. When she told Jack he was one of the bravest people she knew, she meant it like he could face anything. Say like....raping someone and sticking around to not only face the consequences, but take responsibility for it and come out the other side a different person? DH played that perfectly!

For a man that is known for his running away he sure does stay and face some pretty horrible things.
