When you left in 2010, what did you think the chances were that you’d be asked back?
Zero. You know, I’d been let go, or canned, or fired, 3 or 4 times, so I thought, they’ve got to be totally sick of me, I’ve worn out my welcome, they find me annoying, I shouldn’t have messed around so much between takes. But my manager said, always be ready, but it got to the point where I was even going to quit acting and try to concentrate on just making a living. I was doing some construction. I worked at Sony studios which was odd. It’s a small world! I’m glad they asked me back when they did, and I jumped at the chance, and said I’d be honored, and came back with a recharged refreshed attitude and just want to make sure they don’t regret it this time and do everything I could to stay on as long as I could.

When you left, there were rumors that you and Gary Tomlin didn’t get along that well. Was he part of the reason you were let go?
Gary and I got along great, I just think that he kind of, I don’t blame him, I think I got burnt out and wasn’t always doing my best and I think he saw the character a certain way. We always got along as people, and even when he told me I was let go, I thanked him and said I didn’t want this to be awkward, and I appreciate everything I had, I understand it was just my time to walk away from it now. He was very understanding. So we never had a personal thing, it was just business, but at the same time I felt like maybe I didn’t do as much as I could have to stay and bring the most and make the most out of it, and I did it so long I took it for granted. I kind of felt bad and I felt like I owed the show a little more than how I left. So it’s been great to have this opportunity.

Are you on contract?
I am on contract, yes. That’s a good thing.

What is it like working with the new producers? Is the mood on the set different than when you left?
I think all the people who have come back who used to be on the show have come back with a recharged attitude about it, and the standard on the show for performance now is so high, so much higher than I’ve seen it in the past when I’ve been on. It’s like working on an all-star show now, because there are so many new characters, and then the old characters you used to work with have come back, and then there are characters that have been on other soap operas, some really good actors. So you’ve really got to have your lines down and your shit together.

I’m sure! We keep hearing about how it’s one take, and unless something goes really wrong, it’s on to the next scene.
That is difficult, but, some people mistake that for the show just taking anything you throw out there, but it’s actually upped the performances and upped the ante so much that you have to come in and do your job not only efficiently, but at a very high level. They don’t sacrifice the quality, but it’s put a shock and a fear in everyone that there’s no time not to know your lines anymore. The cue card department is not there. [laughs]

So what’s Lucas’s first scene? Do you bust in on Sami or something like that?
I do come knocking on her door, and she thinks I’m somebody else, and then, after calling me and begging me to come help her, she’s like, what are you doing here? And I’m like, what do you mean what am I doing here? You asked me here! So automatically they kind of jump into their routine.

Are we going to see a triangle? So many times when we hear “Lucas”, we think “triangle”.
With Sami’s love life, it’s like a hectagon. There could be a number of triangles in one. I don’t know, I mean, she’s got a lot of dudes, a lot of traffic on that road. But I mean, the fact that they were each other’s first loves, kind of soulmates, they have kids together, this gives Lucas a little authority in the Sami guy department. But there’s always this dynamic with EJ, and then now there’s Rafe, and there’s the Austin scenario with Carrie…

Does Lucas have any new women coming in?
He actually comes in engaged to a woman he met in Hong Kong. That produces a certain reaction: some people are happy about it, some people are sad, some people act like they’re happy when they’re really sad…

Do we get to see her?
No, it’s an off-screen character so far.

The other thing people associate with Lucas and Sami both being on screen is paternity/maternity switches. Will we be seeing any of that?
Well, you never know – it can happen with kids overnight, because you can just say, ‘Actually, it’s your baby.’ So I’m always fearful of my family expanding at a moment’s notice. I do know that one of Lucas’ main priorities is being there for Will. He’s a stand-up guy; I don’t think he’s a deadbeat dad.

How does Lucas react to Will’s issues with his sexuality?
The writers did a great job in playing it very honestly; it’s supportive and loving. I just didn’t want to be the bad guy in that scenario, to be the bigot. But Will denies things, and Lucas has to do some investigating to see what’s really going on since Sami doesn’t even know; she just knows that he’s going through some stuff, and Marlena wouldn’t say anything and wouldn’t tell her why. So Lucas goes in being inquisitive about it but once he sees that that’s the dynamic, he’s really supportive. They’re friends as well as father and son. He lets Will know that he’s a little concerned about how other people will treat Will because of it, but he wants Will to know that he’s not going to treat him any differently. He loves him. I think it’s a great way to play it.

As an actor you get to bring a lot of different elements to it, and a lot of different tones and colors, because some people might say, I love you no matter what, but there’s always that struggle inside with the acceptance. As an actor it’s fun to play those different levels.

Chandler’s a great young actor, so I’m sure you play off each other really well.
He’s amazing, I only had a chance to work with him a little bit before I left, and I saw him a couple times when I was off the show, and I kept saying to myself, that kid’s good, and he keeps getting better and better. He’s a lot more comfortable every day, and going places emotionally that some people are afraid to go to. That’s a good challenge [for me] to have as an actor; you want the guy across from you upping your performance.

Any message for our readers?
Just to thank everybody for their support in bringing me back. I think that fans don’t realize how powerful they are. I think it’s a huge reason that I came back, that I have so much positive feedback from fans and my coworkers to be there again. So thank you for my balloons, and my cookies, and my cakes, and my chocolate-covered strawberries. In return, I promise to give a big show.
How can BD says Lucas is not a deadbeat dad? There better be some major explaining if they're going to redeem him for leaving town -- aka his son -- for years. That's the definition of deadbeat!
Well He mentioned in an interview that he felt it was a hard sell (not true to character) that Lucas would ever leave his son in the firstplace. Like many of the actors who are written off the show the characters they portray sometimes become victims of the writing...But all will be forgotten when he is really there for his son during a huge turning point in his life.

totally made me snork orange soda out of my nose.

Yes, our dear Sami Gene is a well-worn highway. She certainly is.

Thanks for the interview! BD sounds so humble, I hope he is still cocky in his portrayal of Lucas. I never really cared much for Lucas, but I'm surprised by how happy I am that he's back.
Me too!!! You know why? Cause he's gonna bring sexy back. He and AS take sexual tension to a whole new level!I'm sure it's never scripted for them...they just sorta do it on their own. Everything is SOOO rushed now...there's no good old fashioned tension any more! The show needs to bring angst and tension back to the show and in my opinion no one does it like LUMI.
