Daytime fans have long been privy to the talent and charm of Ian Buchanan. He started out in the role of Duke Lavery on General Hospital in the eighties and has played roles on other soaps, including All My Children and The Bold and the Beautiful, for which he won a Daytime Emmy award and a Soap Opera Digest award for Outstanding Supporting Actor. He's also appeared as a series regular and guest star on countless nighttime series, and frequently in film and on stage. And this isn't his first time in Salem, or at least on Days. In 2001, he made a cameo appearance as Lord Sheraton during the Greta von Amburg coronation storyline (and subsequent massacre!). Now, Buchanan has joined the cast in a more permanent way as Ian McAllister, a mysterious man who has an unusual hold on the headstrong Madison James, and it looks like there's plenty more history and drama to play out. Read our interview. Days_Allison: How would you describe your character? Ian Buchanan: He's a man. He's manipulative. He's filthy rich. He's slightly sociopathic, I'd say, maybe a little bit psychotic. He's very passionate. He's kind of interesting (laughs). He's a very interesting man to play. Days_Allison: How would you say that he's different than the other characters you've played on daytime? Ian Buchanan: I think he's different in that he definitely has a much fuller history. He's highly manipulative, and I don't think I've ever really played somebody quite as controlling and power hungry. But he's also kind of chameleon-like. He presents that all of those things really don't matter that much and just the simple things are important but really ... He kind of lies a lot. Pretends a lot. Days_Allison: And how did this role come about? Ian Buchanan: Actually, the writers, Marlene (McPherson) and Darrell (Ray Thomas, Jr.), came to see a play that I was in. During the summer, I was doing Entertaining Mr. Sloane, a revival of the Joe Orton play, and they came to see it. Afterwards, I met with them and they said they were creating a role that was actually quite similar to that character. Would I be interested? I was like, wow, yeah. Really, to play that sort of character in daytime, I'd love it. So that's how it came about ... And I met with Greg Meng and I met with Ken Corday and it was very quickly sorted and I went to work. Days_Allison: You've acted in daytime quite a bit over the years. What is it that you like about the genre? Ian Buchanan: I kind of like it because it's storytelling. I like that it's generally character-driven. It's big. I don't mean over-the-top but it's certainly not that subtle. It's just big, feisty, full. Passionate and dramatic acting, which I love. It's very close to me to doing stage. There's a lot of room for just slight improvisation at this point because the schedule moves so rapidly that you can be impulsive and if it works, it works. It's great. I like it. Some days are like a day at the races. It's kind of funny. Just watching everyone running around, leaping over hurdles, but then achieving things. Days_Allison: A lot of actors I've spoken with seem to like the pace. Ian Buchanan: I like it. You need to be prepared. You need to be prepared with what you have to do and then you need to be prepared to be surprised. I like that. Things change and if you're working with people who work the same way, and I'm very fortunate that I do, it's really cool. You just make magic, which I think is wonderful. You make magic more when things just happen. That's what people like. They like to see magic. We know that we like to see magic, and we can't wait for more from the intriguing Ian http://www.sonypictures.com/tv/shows/daysofourlives/specials/interviews_detail_5700.html Edited by Partnersincrime, Feb 10 2012, 07:30 AM.

I miss him so much. I hate the current version. He could never be this stupid. Hoping the real EJ returns soon. |

You mean the EJ that has to pretend to be something he's not in order to please others? No thanks...I think I'll pass on that one. |

I think Ian is just what this show needs in order to spice things up. So far I'm impressed. |
