Even when the real Gina was in town, John didn't have feelings for her. And he certainly didn't for Hope/Gope. It was only in a chip-induced state that an alter-ego of his had feelings for Gope. When Gope and the Real Gina were parading around town (and John was in his right mind the entire time during this period), John was indifferent and slightly irritated. Then when The Real Gina realized that John didn't give a crap about her, she fell in love with Bo.
This whole storyline is one big "fail".
But did John actually have a chip? I know Hope did because I remember that terrible scene of John performing "surgery" to remove it out of Hope's brain in a bedroom of the DiMera mansion while a party was being held downstairs, LOL. However, I don't remember John having said chip in his brain or wherever it could've been. The possibilities were endless in the late-90s/early-00s (brain, teeth, etc.). I thought Hope as Gina lured John away from Marlena on their honeymoon and while they were on the submarine, Gina pursued John so bad that he was brainwashed back into having feelings for her or whatever. I don't think he had an actual chip in his brain or anything because John actually loved Gina at one time when they both worked for Stefano pre-1985. It wasn't the same case as Hope, who never had feelings for John and only had those feelings because she thought she was Princess Gina. So like I said, I wish they would stop saying John had feelings for Hope, but rather say Gina because that's at least true to the history.
He had a chip. I think it was in his neck? I can see the scene of him getting out in my head, but I'm not positive about when it was. Hmm. For the life of me, I can't recall John ever having a chip/removing a chip from his body. I thought his brainwashing was all just old-fashioned brainwashing method of drilling certain things into his head (and not literally LOL).

Which is why it was reactivated in the sub by Hopina. Once the chip was activated, he was turned into Jawn. This fake persona slept with Hopina. Then it was deactivated. At which time he turned into real John again. Then it fell out sometime around Christmas 1999.
I can't believe we even have to discuss this disaster. It was even worse than Greta and Austin in the GOE.

Google "John Black brain chip". It talks about how Hopina activated John's brainchip with a remote control on the sub.

pretty good eppi today; had to FF that Marlena/John scene at the end on the couch though. I know I'll be "thumbs downed" for this, but I cannot watch them together. Freaks. Me. Out. It's like being forced to watch my parents. Me no likey.

I'm glad I missed those crazy years although I know some loved them. And I guess, if you write the characters well you can do anything with them (I adored "LOST), but, honestly, when you guys talk about chips and subsex I can't help but roll my eyes a bit.

The chip was definitely in John's neck. All these years later I still haven't forgotten the scene where the camera "zoomed" inside and we got to see the chip floating around under his ear somewhere. It looked ridiculous.

It was even worse than Greta and Austin in the GOE. I just went back and watched the clips from the subsex between John and Hope/Gina, and then the fall out when John told Marlena about sleeping with Hope/Gina. There was no chip or remote control that turned John into anyone else. Like I recalled, Gina lured John into the ocean and he was attacked by DiMera thugs and injected with a needle that drugged him and caused him to pass out. The thugs brought him to Gina inside the submarine. Gina had everything set up to make John think it was July 1985 when he and Gina were lovers. When John woke up, in his drugged haze, he believed Gina's story that it 1985 and that they were still lovers. He was able to beleive her, because there were actual memories from when they were together since they actually shared a past. Gina continued to brainwash John (without a chip or remote control, just word of mouth) into falling for her again and they then made love. Afterwards, Stefano caught them, threw John out and he was found on the Hawaiian beach and taken to the hospital where he woke up and remembered nothing until much later.
So from what I've seen, Gina/Hope was the only one to have a chip inserted to brainwash. John wasn't. John woke up with those feelings for Gina because he acutally did have those feelings once upon a time, and Gina set everything up so that when he woke up, he would believe it was that time.

John discovered he had a chip in his neck first. Then John and Marlena went to Bo and Hope and told them about the chips and then John removed Hope's chip in her neck. The chips weren't revealed to be in John and Hope's necks until Stefano tried to brainwash them again in 2002 or 2003 when Hope was named mother of the year or something like that.

The mother of the year was 2001, I think. Which also explains why my memory is hazy. Those were not consistent Days watching years for me, lol.

Those weren't the only scenes in the story. Well duh, LOL. I'm aware of that. But what I was referring to is that John said he was drugged and woke up thinking it was 1985 as a result of the drugged haze, not a brain chip or whatever. Throughout all of this, Hope had a chip the entire time. That was the chip that got activated on that winter night when Hope collapsed in the snow and turned into Gina, which is the scene that started all of this nonsense. I don't recall any satelites effecting John when that happened. Only Hope.

I believe it fell out during Bo and Gina's NYE wedding. Hmm. Bo and Hope's wedding is a little hazy to me, so you guys may actually be right. I don't think I was watching as intently during that time period because I was only like 12 at the time and in school, LOL, and could only watch when I was home or remembered to record the show on VCR.
I wish I could find a single scene about the chip in John's neck. I'm seeing nothing.

About the chips, the remote control, and the rest of the Hopina saga, including the RPG coming to Salem, realizing John could care less about her, and falling for Bo.

John definitely had a chip. It fell out prior to Bo and Gina's wedding. John was sitting in church and had real bad neck or head pain or something. We got that awful scene Kenny described and it fell out. Rolf, who was disguised as a Rabbi I believe, was hiding in a confessional and went by and picked it up after it fell to the ground.

I must say, though, rewatching those clips from the Princess Gina saga, I can't believe how into storyline I was, LOL. I loved everything Princess Gina. Watching it now again after all of these years, I'm so confused and can't believe I was able to keep up with it.
