Daytime Royalty spoke with Mary Beth Evans today about her character Kayla's surprise return to the show. [There was an issue with the recording application used in the interview, so the following are just the most informative bits of the interview paraphrased. These are not direct quotes.] * Story for Kayla is still up in the air; doesn't sound like much has changed on that front; sounds like Kayla will still be seen every now and then working at the Pub and giving out advice. * Peggy McCay (Caroline) is doing well health-wise; MBE said she just saw her yesterday and she's fine. * MBE agrees that Steve being off-canvas limits what Kayla can do story-wise. * Nothing about Joey coming on the show either as a child or SORASed. * MBE wouldn't reveal if what's being filmed now is a funeral, but would say that Kayla is a rock and source of strength in those situations. * (About Steve and Kayla's 2006 return) MBE says she thought there were some really good moments throughout that story, but mostly, she and Stephen Nichols were just happy to be back; she mentioned that, during the hospital lockdown plot in 2008, Stefano was supposed to have a phoenix tattoo put on baby Joey, but she and Stephen Nichols put a stop to that. * (About Steve and Kayla's non-exit in 2009) MBE thought it was strange too that Steve and Kayla didn't receive any kind of exit story or scenes; she mentioned the budget at the time and Gary Tomlin coming in as being the factors behind their leaving the show, but had a good attitude about it. |

So basically same story as before, lol. TFP.
I think it's a shame she feels this way. It's not like him being on canvas led to any great stories for her in recent years. Edited by granolagirl, Feb 15 2012, 04:06 PM.

Interesting note about Stefano wanting to put a tattoo on Joey. I always wondered why that point was dropped and nothing came out of him being taken for a while. I think that aspect could've been interesting and I'm a little surprised Evans and Nichols were so against it. It could've led to story for them, rather than getting the boot. |

I agree. I've heard that many times, and it sounds like they threw away some real story potential for the sake of salvaging one scene that didn't make sense. Of course, that was right before Ed Scott was fired and many things changed. It may not have made much difference in the long run. |

Yes - the whole "stopping the phoneix tattoo" thing sound pretty stupid...WHY would they have an issue with this? It could have led to a good story for them. |

I don't think the tattoo angle is stupid. It forever would connect Steve and Kayla to the DiMeras, just like John was. And maybe story could've been created out of it that may have kept Steve and Kayla around. Probably not due to the budget, but if the story potentials were there, maybe Tomlin would have considered them useful. By the time Tomlin got there in the fall, Steve and Kayla had nothing really going for them. If the tattoo angle would've happened, there could have been something there. |

Yeah...I don't understand why they stopped the tattoo, and I find that kind I annoying. And I bet it's why they were written out. |

It's the damned if you do, damned if you don't aspect of things. Stephen has said that he protested because he didn't believe there was anyway Steve wouldn't have killed Stefano if he tattooed his child. Rightly or wrongly, he felt that strongly about the character and I think MBE pretty much agreed and expressed that. Of course, at that time, Ed Scott was still there and they probably believed they had some leeway to express those opinions. And it's not like the issue was completely dropped. Stefano still took Joey and they did make a point of noticing a "freckle" when they found him again. But then Ed Scott was fired and a bunch of things changed (including a rumored storyline for Steve and Kayla). I wouldn't doubt that them being adamant about certain things (including the need for a scene addressing Ava) may have contributed to their exits, but I don't think it was the only reason. |

I'm sure it pissed off Higley, though, so when given the option she retaliated. |

Maybe Kayla will be a "source of strength" when Jo Johnson dies. Fulfilling my desire for some great new Kayla/Jack/Adrienne moments. (I know, like that would ever happen). |

Oh, I'm sure she did. I'm sure she was already pissed off about the push for the conversation about Ava as well. I'm not saying it didn't have an impact, but Deidre and Drake got written off and as far as I know they weren't complaining about anything. I just don't think what happened with the tattoo on the baby was the only reason they were let go. I think there were a lot of things going on. And it's not that I necessarily agree with SN and MBE's decision to fight the tattoo. I was just providing information regarding why they fought it. |

The tatoo thing to me just seemed like MBE and SN wanted to play there characters more old school soaps before te sci-fi of the 90's kicked in. It was a good point if Steve was true to character he would have killed Stephano for hurting or threatening to hurt on of his children. I'm sure they were going to be out no matter what. It just goes to show that they really hold grudges against actors who speak up on behalf of their character which the good actors seem to do. |

i dont see the need for her i like her but the show already has a marlena and i dont see the need for her...she's a doctor and a mother and wife where are those stories??? they could have easily brought Kim back to pop up now and then at the pub giving advice cause thats all she did for the last 20 years while MBE refused to return for funerals weddings holidays but now she's all gung ho....when is steve coming back? |

She did turn down an appearance at Zach's funeral in 2005 IIRC, though... or something similar. The years she was on ATWT it was almost always recurring (although of course that doesn't always mean you're available for other soaps). tylerbo, Steve is coming back once upon a never. I don't think they were using her very much at that point, but I don't know for sure. I do remember hearing that she was the one who called her agent in late 2005/early 2006, and that's when it turned out Days was interested. I guess she really wasn't available very much during the years she was off Days, if you count the ATWT years. She left in 1992, was on GH from 1993 to 1999, and started recurring on ATWT from 2000-2005. |

I'm just happy that Kayla is around. A story would be good. Having her kids in town would be better. Oh well, at least she's onscreen and she makes a more lively bartender than Caroline. Would be better if they hadn't forgotten that she's a doctor, a simple comment as to why she's 'on a break' would be nice (unless I missed it). |
