Head writer Bill Bell discusses the state of "Days" in a letter to producer Wes Kenney from December 1967:

Even 45 years ago, Bill knew how important it was to put the best product out each day, in order to avoid cancellation.

What an amazing letter. I am especially interested in the last part which talks about the futility of complaining after an episode airs because "there are already 12 in the can", now there are what 60 episodes shot before airing? I wish someone at Days would take this kind of proactive role now especially with the talent on the show. As fans we really should be pretty pleased every week not once a month.

This letter sums up why I think Bill Bell was and always will be Days best head writer. He had balls and was not afraid to confront anyone when it came to what was best for the show. He cared so much for the show and knew lack of communication and changing things without notifying him could spell cancellation. Sadly those types of things (mixed with some others) is what ended a lot of soaps in the past. I also think that lack of commitment is what will eventually kill the other soaps left on the air including DAYS!

I wonder what he would write The producers of The Young and The Restless and Days of our lives if he was still alive today. I think that would be a really good read.

Bill Bell was a God amongst men. I can't even read that letter without thinking about "What if..." What if he would have stayed at DAYS instead of creating The Young and the Restless. DAYS would rule the world. How funny that the soap he was head writer for and the two soaps that he created will end up being the last three soaps around. The man was a genius.

Too bad his son married a moron and is letting her destroy Y&R.

This is fascinating stuff. But it's kind of embarrassing too since I'm sure this was a private letter.

I'm sure he's not embarrassed.

Love it! Bill Bell was one of a kind. Days had its glory years imo when he was headwriter. Too bad he couldn't have been cloned.

Which makes a lot of sense, because Days was far from an institution at this point in its run.

Fascinating reading, thanks for sharing! If only there was an exec who was so attuned to viewer experience these days.
