I wasn't sure whether people would find this interesting or not but hey it's going to be slow around here with the the two week break coming up.

According to Soap Opera Digest, several sources say Days is considering moving out of their current Burbank studio this fall and into the Glendale studio where All My Children was taped and most recently used by Hollywood Heights.

Maybe one plus of the move could be that Days will have to shut down for a little while to make the move and thus cut down on far ahead they are taping.

I'm curious if this other studio is cheaper, better (larger) or more centrally located. Basically, I'm wondering what the motivation is since it is not economic chump change to make this move.

Isnt this going to cost a lot of money? Dont know if its a good sign if AMC was soon canceled after moving there.

ETA...as for location. I dont think location matters. Closer to what? This is more a residential part of LA county and on the border of Glendale. (Maybe that's why they say Glendale.) Burbank is an actual city and not LA. I guess as far as space it depends on DAYS. Who knows how many stages they get? Its not WB studios or Paramount.

Much prefers sweevil, snarky EJ over Father Figure Fucktard Eejiot.

Maybe we'd get new/refreshed sets out of it.

Maybe this is a cost cutting move. I would say they could be confident this will help them save money and stay on the air longer. However, look what happened to AMC after they moved to this studio.

There was nothing in the SOD article about the size of the studio or why Days is considering this move.

Didn't they just brag about doing that?

I remember when they were talking about All My Children taking it that it didn't have alot of trendy places (eateries, etc) around it compared with what they had in NYC. So I got the impression it was off the beaten path.

It'd probably be an opportunity to not move sets that dont get frequent use anymore.

DAYS current studio is probably better from everything I've heard in the past. If it saves the show and gives them more money for casting, wardrobe, etc. then I'm all for it. I can't imagine them moving studios though. That would be crazy.

Well, you really can't compare NYC to Atwater Village. Having been to both locations, AV is a new families pocket of LA. Its also close to Silver Lake and that's pretty trendy. Actors, like Keifer Sunderland have houses by the Reservoir. Its not off the beaten path...more about locals then tourists.

I dont know if it would be a cost cutting move because doesnt NBC own the Burbank property? There's been articles in the LA Times that much of NBC is moving to these new studios that Universal are constructing adjacent to Citywalk.

I don't know if the studio move had anything to do with this or not, but AMC went from looking like shit in New York to actually having decent production values, decent looking (bigger) sets and better lighting when they moved to Andrita Studios in Glendale. I recall articles talking about how much bigger it was than the New York studio and how it would cut production costs because the larger space allowed them to leave sets up permanently rather than constantly having to dismantle them. I don't know how much bigger that space is than NBC Studios in Burbank though.

Here are some articles about the move from 2008:

Quote:

ABC has stated that the show and the network stands to save tons of money by making this move. How can that be, when they are investing quite a bit in relocation fees, and risk the potential of losing viewers if fan favorite stars, like Thorsten Kaye (Zach), don't move with the show?

Leave it to Cameron Mathison to clear that all up for us. "Yes the network is spending money to get us all out here, but once we are here, the new stages are just so much bigger than our current stages in NYC, that we will save a lot of money in production costs." Mathison went on to explain that now, there is only so much "real estate" at the NYC stages and sets are constantly going up and coming down. "We employ two crews, a daytime crew and a nighttime crew, to manage the building and striking of sets," revealed Mathison. The show is operating around the clock and maintaining a 24-hour production team means astronomical staffing fees.

In the new studios in California, they have so much sound stage space, that sets can be constructed and remain standing.

So where are these spacious new stages?

We can now reveal that All My Children will be taping at a state-of-the art production facility in Glendale, CA called Andrita Studios. Andrita is no stranger to the ABC/Disney family. SOAPnet shot the second season of General Hospital: Night Shift in these facilities.
Quote:

When it moves to Los Angeles, All My Children's studio space will be twice as large as its current New York digs. Having more studio space will allow All My Children to construct permanent sets, whereas the show currently must dismantle many of its sets daily due to the constraints of its studio space.

"The move to Los Angeles enables both All My Children and One Life to Live to dramatically improve the series production models and achieve significant efficiencies while enhancing each show," Frons added. "We had to examine every option on the table to combat the current economic realities, and rising costs of production, and we are doing it in a way that makes each of our shows stronger."

if it saves money than I understand, but there is so much history in the current studio. Have they been there since 1965?

Thanks for posting the articles.

Hmm...its true that they may save money by having more permanent set, but that not all the stuff DAYS uses at the lot. They have whole warehouses of storage with old/non-permanent sets. Also, I wonder if NBC would have to pay for the space in addition to the cost of moving?

As for comparing space in NYC and LA...LA always gives you more space per square foot because they have the square footage to give.

Between 1983 and 1989 they used Sunset Gower Studios.

There were some posts about this 2 weeks ago because as of July 1st
NBC stopped giving the studio tour in Burbank & it was
Also discussed that the property had been sold so either
Days has to rent the space from the new owner or move

AMC did improve greatly in the show's appearance. I'm not sure if they hired new people or if it was part of the studio change. Their sets got way better too. If that happens on DAYS than I'm also for it. I know OLTL filmed in a tiny shit hole basement in NY. Not sure if that was the case with AMC, but I doubt it.

I think the move also coincided with AMC's transition to HD though, so that would have accounted for some of that. They moved/upgraded some sets from NYC and recreated a bunch in LA with the HD upgrade in mind. I dont think Days overall visual look is going to change much until they get some better people for lighting and production design.

With Days, it seemed like they just turned HD cameras on to less-than SD sets.
