-It was a nice way to make Sami pay for her past crimes so that they could move the character forward. Not that they did.
They did move her foward. She was still a scheming bitch but she grew after all that. It was JER that reversed her in 2003 again.
This is absolutely accurate. What could have been.
I believe it, that it was Reilly who took her back.

When I say "they" I mean all of them in the time since this happened until now. It's hard for me to keep track of who did what, and at the end of the day I tend to be more like...well, it's been done. And in some ways, imho, Sami is worse now than she was back then.

During this story, I have one favorite moment of 6:43 to 7:42 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRfuR6gN9y4&feature=related

The year 1999 was for me the year when the show started to die and never recovered!

I stopped watching the show while the needle was in Sami's arm, before Lucas came in. That's how much I hated this story line. Didn't come back til 2009.

The lead-up to Sami's execution was an excellent umbrella storyline. I think it was a great example of how to tie storylines together across the whole canvas: Sami, Austin, and Will were on the run and hiding out with Tracy in her hippie cabin in the woods. Meanwhile, Carrie was growing increasingly frustrated that Austin was hiding out with Sami. (Carrie thought it was Sami's idea to run, but Carrie was heartbroken when she learned it was actually Austin's idea for Sami to go on the lam.) Meanwhile, Mike was comforting Carrie through this difficult time, and there was some great Carrie/Marlena tension because Marlena thought Carrie was relying too much on Mike. And Craig and Nancy were exploiting Mike's feelings for Carrie in order to bring down Mike so that Craig could be the hospital's Chief of Staff. This culminated in Mike and Carrie sleeping together and Austin walking in on Mike and Carrie in bed together.

In addition, Kate schemed for Nicole to marry Lucas so that Lucas could get custody of Will. This broke Eric's heart, since Eric was in love with Nicole at the time. Eric then hated Lucas, and Eric teamed up with Billie to prove Sami's innocence so that Sami and Austin could come home safely. And this all affected Kate's relationship with her kids because both Austin and Billie believed that Lucas had killed Franco and that Kate was covering for Lucas.

So, this one storyline of Sami going on the run had ripples across the whole canvas leading up to the climax of Sami's execution. This was one of my favorite storylines, and I'm disappointed that DAYS doesn't do those types of umbrella storylines anymore. (Well, maybe DAYS tries to do those types of storylines, but it usually ends up being quite shitty.)

I agree it was a great umbrella storyline. Unfortunately there are very few clips of it on Youtube. I've been thinking about uploading the whole storyline some day.

I never watched this when it originally aired, but I watched parts of it later online. It was so good. Loved it.
And while I didn't want them to kill Sami back then, now it seems like it would have been for the best.

LOL - Lysie's comment is well taken, but my favorite part of this is when Lucas busts in on them. It must have been fun to tape, in a way - lots of action. Just so fun and soapy to have him come in and "STOP THE EXECUTION" like that.

Lucas is great, here's where he finds out about the execution around (10:30)
Love Kates scheming in all this as well.

Now I have to hunt down the clip that follows this....lol....

I firmly remember Lucas' expression when he finds out that she is in fact on her way to her death....

Wow, Ali looks so young!

I enjoyed the clips - thought they were pretty suspenseful. While I'm not surprised Marlena visited the Stefano to ask for his help, I am surprised he, apparently, did not take advantage of this opportunity with Marlena. I don't think I was watching DAYS at this time and I don't know the dynamics of everything that was going on then, though.

Thanks for posting!

Truly. Why didn't they take the opportunity to have Stefano tell Marlena that if she married him... he would save her daughter?

Kate never gets some of the credit for saving Sami's life but she totally did. Lucas basically blackmailed her into it but she did it. The great thing about this storyline was no one came out looking weak or out of tune in some way. It played perfectly for each character.

I loved that Kate started this entire thing and ended it by getting Sami off of death row only because Lucas threatened her and she didn't want Lucas to go to jail and she didn't want to go to jail for setting Sami up. She knew if Lucas went to jail, she went to jail. Now that's the best motivation to Kate doing anything.

Lucas was not a hero, but he wasn't a villain. He couldn't let Sami go to death row but he knew if he got arrested then his mother would get arrested. Add to it that he loves sticking it to Sami and Will's custody and you just didn't know what Lucas would do. The tension built during the whole story. And it was a surprise when he came running through.

I loved everyone in this storyline. When Austin decked Lucas, I cheered. I loved Lucas but he deserved that punch for taking so damn long.

Strength and weaknesses played true to character.

Marlena going to Stephano even though no one wanted her to, all for Sami. Sami pulling the gun out on Kate and Lucas. On minute, Lucas is in turmoil over Sami being locked up, the next minute he's using it to get his way.

Even Roman who arrested Sami and had a thing for Kate at the time, was rushing to find the truth within the confines of the law.

Honestly, the only character not used in a complex way during this storyline was Austin. Austin was the hero who couldn't save her. This was a good storyline.

You didn't know Lucas would show up? I thought it played that way when we didn't see much of Lucas after the scene when he finds out that Sami is about to go into the chamber. So I was sort of waiting and hoping he would barge in at any minute....

I know you have a few clips here and there but does anyone have the clip where Lucas actually blackmails Kate into finding out someone to take the fall? I haven't seen that in such a long time.

Oh and yeah on Austin punching Lucas' lights out that day...I also cheered!

I wasn't exactly crazy about this storyline, but I didn't hate it either. The only thing I can say is that compared to the crap we have now, this was drama! I actually sat and watched this and had to get to the second clip to see what happened next! Everything seems so boring now.

I found more scenes...apparently the entire story is at this person's channel

I remembered that Lucas had a dream of what would happen when Will found out the truth as an adult...but I didn't remember that it would be what snapped Lucas back into reality and had him rush back to Salem.

Gone, But Not Forgotten!

I enjoyed the "Sami Execution" stuff, so many memorable scenes with a variety of characters. The characters and SL were writte no much better back then, even Sami!
Oh, how I miss the OLD DAYS!

Whether you loved Sami or hated her you were invested in one of the characters in this story. If you didn't care about Sami you might care about Marlena struggling to help her daughter. With so many characters so involved you cared about something.

Now days there are no characters to make you feel invested in. The characters on edges of the storylines are just not used enough to get invested in. And the characters in the stories really don't ring true. they just feel out of place. Used as props.

I think it's because the writers don't have a clear vision of how they want the audience to feel or react. And the story has not been set up in a way that makes the audience want to react.

Also They dont have clear motivations for any of the characters that are not one layered. They are not writing to characters. They are writing to the story.
