From the very first episode the quality of the writing just wasn't up to par with past seasons. So many things happened that were logically impossible. The characters were dumbed down. The plot was overwrought with foolishness. The monologues were stale and tedious. It was just bad. Spoiler: click to toggle The worst part was that the writers had Deb fall in love with Dexter. Like... legitimate, romantic, "I want to marry you and have your babies" love. Pretty gross. The last episode ended with Deb walking in on Dexter killing the season's big bad. It was a good scene but not nearly as good as it should've been considering we waited six seasons for that moment. Anyone could've written that scene and it would've been good, but it wasn't as good as it should've been. I thought the scene from season 5 when Deb almost caught Dexter and Lumen killing Jordan Chase was a thousand times better. It was much more dramatic and tension-filled.

It was VERY heavy-handed. His voiceovers were like JER 90s soap dialogue/voiceovers...explaining EVERY detail and spelling every teeny, tiny thing out for you. it was really dumbed down. I thought it was dumbed down, the situations were ridiculous. Dexter was just sloppy. It was just bad all around. The only episode I loved was when he envisioned his brother, and the season finale where Deb walked in on Dexter. The rest of the cast was pretty much ignored and they continued to make Quinn completely unlikable. I don't even remember anything Batista and LaGuerta went through. Louis was intriguing.

I caught the first three episodes of the new season of Dexter last night - Season 7, set to premiere on Showtime September 30 - courtesy of a screener from Showtime that arrived yesterday. These three episodes were the best openers I've seen for Dexter - taut, tough, unflinching in addressing the issue that has haunted and torn Dexter from the very beginning. Herewith my review, unavoidably studded with spoilers. The final scene of Season 6 was Dexter's worst nightmare come true: Deb standing in the doorway, with Dexter's hands on the knife in Travis's body. Season 7 does not shy away from confronting the inevitable consequences of this scene: Deb is too smart a cop to be swayed by Dexter's first explanation, pretty fast on his feet, that he just "snapped" and killed Travis that way. That wouldn't account for the plastic with which Travis was wrapped - all too familiar to Debra, who was wrapped in the same when Rudy almost killed her. Before too long, she realizes that Dexter was the Bay Harbor Butcher and the model for the Ice Truck Killer. And, in another unflinching stroke, Dexter doesn't deny this. A part of him knows he can't pull the wool over his sister's eyes at this point, and a part of him, as always, welcomes the relief of coming clean. Deb - of course - can't bring herself to arrest Dexter, but she - also of course - thinks that maybe she can somehow cure him. Dexter knows better, but he has no choice but to give this a try. And this brings us to the deepest crux of Dexter's life - which has been at the back and sometimes the front of just about every episode. If Dexter can take out a serial killer before the killer takes another innocent life - a serial killer who for whatever reason is beyond the power of the police to stop - is not Dexter doing an ultimately moral thing? In the third episode, Dex seeks to convince Deb of this proposition. We the viewers are already convinced - at least, I am - but we're not police. And Debra? I'll keep this one, crucially important answer from this review. But suffice to say that Deb's decision is plausible and stands to set Dexter on a new, logical, satisfying and keenly painful track.

Although I have no idea how they can go on from here. And honestly, I would prefer this to be final season. But I know it won't be.

The stuff in the airport was silly but it was heads and tails above the ridiculousness of last season. Still, the fact that Dexter would go out of his way to kill another victim when he's already under so much suspicion is dumb. It's plot holes like these that make it impossible to take this show seriously anymore. I'm glad the writers didn't dumb Deb down and have her believe Dexter's story. I thought for sure they were going to drag it out by having her be braindead all season so the fact that she figured it all out by the end of the first episode was a pleasant surprise. The next few episodes look good judging by the trailer. I'm cautiously optimistic.

It's not that I'm a stickler for realism, but it's a well-known fact that there are cameras everywhere in an airport. It was a huge risk for Dexter to follow his victim there, not to mention killing him there. Do the writers really expect us to believe Dexter had time to prepare a kill room in the middle of the airport without getting caught? And what's going to happen when his victim is reported missing? Are we to believe the police won't review the security tapes from the last place he was seen alive?

I held off because I feel like the show jumped the shark big time last season. I feel like Deb in love with Dexter and Deb not busting Dexter on the spot is just too much for me to accept...

Also, the Russian story should be interesting. I can't wait to see how the girl from Chuck fits in. I love her.
