VAUGHAN BECOMES JUST THE 137TH ACTOR TO LEAD MONTHLY RANKINGS IN 47 YEARS OF "DAYS": Greg Vaughan (Eric) was the monthly episode leader in December, his first full month with "Days." Vaughan joins 136 other actors in leading the monthly rankings over the course of the show's 47 years on the air. Vaughan has already tied his predecessor, Jensen Ackles, who only led the rankings once during his time as Eric from 1997-2000, in September 1998.

SWEENEY'S 173 EPISODES ARE LEAST AMOUNT FOR LEADER SINCE 2008: Alison Sweeney (Sami) was the yearly leader in episodes with 173. This is the smallest amount for a leader since James Scott (EJ) led in 2008 with 166 episodes.

THREE NEW MEMBERS JOIN THE TOP 15 IN CLASS OF 2012...HALL EXTENDS RECORD TO 26 YEARS IN TOP 15: Deidre Hall extended her "Days" record by being in the top 15 episode appearances for the 26th time in her "Days" career. Drake Hogestyn (John) and Peter Reckell (Bo) have now both been in the top 15 for 23 years. The rest: Kristian Alfonso (Hope, 22nd time); Alison Sweeney (Sami, 19th time); Melissa Reeves (Jennifer, 16th time); Arianne Zucker (Nicole, 11th time); James Scott (EJ, 6th time); Shawn Christian (Daniel, 5th time); Galen Gering (Rafe, 4th time); Eric Martsolf (Brady, 4th time); Casey Deidrick (Chad, 2nd time). Three new members joined the top 15 for the first time: Camila Banus (Gabi), Kate Mansi (Abigail) and Chandler Massey (Will).

SWEENEY LEADS FOR THIRD TIME: Alison Sweeney (Sami) was the yearly leader in episodes for the 3rd time in her "Days" career. She also led for the year in 1998 and 2007.

SAMI & SWEENEY PASS MICKEY & CLARKE FOR 6TH PLACE ALL-TIME: Alison Sweeney (Sami) moved into 6th place on the all-time appearance list, passing John Clarke (Mickey). Also, the character of Sami Brady (including all actresses) passed the character of Mickey Horton (including all actors) for 6th place all-time on the character list.

THREE SET CAREER HIGHS: Of those in at least their second full year on the show, Camila Banus (Gabi), Casey Deidrick (Chad) and Chandler Massey (Will) each appeared in their most episodes ever in 2012.

MARLENA MINUS 40: The character of Bo Brady currently leads all "Days" characters, with 4,086 appearances. Marlena is currently just 40 episodes behind, at 4,046 appearances. If Marlena appears in 41 episodes (before and if Bo returns to Salem), then Marlena will be the new leader in total character appearances.

ROGERS NEEDS TWO FOR 2,500! Suzanne Rogers (Maggie) needs just 2 more episodes to be just the 10th actor in "Days" history to appear in at least 2,500 episodes. Rogers will join that exclusive group in January 2013, the same year that she celebrates her 40th anniversary with the show. She debuted as Maggie on August 20, 1973.

LIKE MOTHER, LIKE SON: Bryan Dattilo (Lucas) leads his "mom", Lauren Koslow (Kate) by just one episode on the all-time list. Dattilo has appeared in 1,929 episodes, while Koslow has appeared in 1,928 episodes.

A TALE OF TWO JOES: Joseph Mascolo (Stefano) has passed Joseph Gallison (Neil) for 19th place on the all-time appearance list.

HEY THERE, PARTNER, I'M LEADING BY ONE! Roman Brady has appeared in 2,331 episodes and Abe Carver has appeared in 2,330 episodes. Roman's stats do not include Drake Hogestyn, who officially is counted as John Black for all his episodes on the list.

RAFE JUMPS 10 SPOTS: In 2012, Rafe Hernandez passed the characters of Adrienne, Anna, Brandon, Chelsea, Eric, Eugene, Ivan, Justin, Robert and Stephanie on the all-time list.

MANSI IS NEW ABBY LEADER: Kate Mansi (Abigail) just passed Ashley Benson as the all-time leader for Abigail. Mansi has appeared in 176 episodes as Abby, while Benson appeared in 175 episodes.

Not for characters who were in at least 5 episodes. I have to make the cut-off at some point, so many years ago I chose 5 episodes (for a character) to qualify being in the episode rankings list. Tons of people have appeared in 1 episode guest roles...Frank Parker played a Car Salesman and a Doctor; Mark Hapka was in a dream sequence; and then of course there are all the guest stars who were on in the 1970s to early 1980s which records don't list who played the characters. So maybe other actors were in 1 or 2 episodes each but there's no way to verify it without watching the tapes from that time frame.

My stats are for any characters who have appeared in at least 5 episodes of the show.

But out of those 84 listed, some of the characters at the bottom have been in less than 5 episodes, no?

Are you referring to something like this?

Fred Rapport (Juror-8/Dr. Hightower-1) 9
Joey Aresco (Goon-7/Joe Moroni-1) 8

Dr. Hightower and Joe Moroni qualify because the characters appeared in at least 5 episodes of the show. Joey Aresco played him for only 1 episode, but other actor(s) played Joe Moroni for at least 4 more episodes.

Again, all the lists on that page are for all characters who have appeared in at least 5 episodes in the show's history.

Thanks so much Jason! I find all of this information so fascinating and appreciate the time and attention you put into this!

My first thoughts on the full year numbers: Freddie Smith' s 68/244 episodes is ridiculously and unacceptably low. There are others whose counts are too high/low, but Freddie all but disappeared for months at a time. Hopefully he is better utilized in 2013 along with his onscreen parents and great uncle.

IMO, these are the actors who deserve to be on that list, based either on the legacy of their character or, in Chandler's case, a combination of the character's legacy and the strength of the actor. (As always, I will admit that I'm unapologetically biased on that particular subject.) I could also be persuaded to leave Arianne on there based on the strength of her acting. The others? Not so much.

Next year, I'd prefer to see a list that looks more like this (in alphabetical order):

Kristian Alfonso
John Aniston
Bryan Dattilo
Eileen Davidson
Deidre Hall
Drake Hogestyn
Lauren Koslow (or Mary Beth Evans)
Joseph Mascolo
Chandler Massey
Alison Sweeney

(Disclaimers: I'd love to include the Hayes duo, but from what I understand, their lack of airtime is at least partially their choice. I'd love to include Freddie Smith, but I'm only allowing myself one completely biased [yet also completely justifiable, IMO -- Chandler can certainly hold his own with those heavyweights] choice. I'd love to include Wally Kurth and Judi Evans, but they're not currently on contract [to the best of my knowledge, everyone on the above list is, but there are some whom I'm not certain about, like Mary Beth Evans and John Aniston]. I'm not including actors who are not currently on the show. There's a lack of Hortons because there aren't really many on the show right now whom I'd like to see in the top ten. I'm probably forgetting someone who doesn't suck, but that list still looks great to me, mainly because it doesn't include Sir Blinks-a-Lot, Shawn Christian, or a member of a family that didn't even exist five years ago.)

Anyway, on a completely different note...thanks, as always, for the information, Jason!

Thanks for all your hard work!!

I have one question though, for example, with Kristin Alfonso you have (Hope ###/Princess Gina ###) and with Eileen Davidson, you have (Kristin Blake ###/Susan Banks ###/Sister Mary ##/Penelope Kent #/...that other one XD ##)

So, why do you have Josh Taylor listed for Roman and Chris separately? Just wondering :)

Edit: and now that I think about it, if you are doing multi charicters, shouldn't Wayne also get credit for Alex North?

(Just trying to help :) )

Kristian, Eileen, Galen, Charles Shaughnessy, etc... all played DUAL roles (at the same time). I count those together in the actor counts. Josh, Wayne, Renee Jones, etc... played roles at DIFFERENT times. I had to make a choice whether to combine ALL roles, or just DUAL roles, and I went with dual only, since then there would be TONS of people having to be combined together. Ali Sweeney as Young Adrienne, Joe Mascolo as Dr. Tufano, Frank Parker as Car Salesman, etc.... Plus there are tons of 1-2 day guest roles from the 1970s and 1980s which we don't know who played the roles, so for that reason, they are not combined.

Thanks to Microsoft Excel charts, some interesting (and easy-to-do) stats packages coming up soon. First up: 2000-2012: Who are the top 10 for the past 13 years of episodes??

I would think Patricia Barry (Addie) might be a candidate. She's in her early 90s.

I'll get the list compiled soon of everyone born before 1930. Then just match up those who have passed away, and we'll have the list!
