Always the Panic Spreader
Justin Chatwin stars in the hit Showtime original series, “Shameless,” where he plays the character of Jimmy/Steve. The one persona, Steve, is a car thief and was created to escape his original life, which ironically, was a rich lifestyle. Jimmy, on the other hand, is a loving boyfriend, father, and family man. Chatwin gave us some insight on what to expect this season on the two personas:
“The ‘Jimmy’ character is a little bit more undeveloped than the ‘Steve’ character, and I think during the story this season, we will see more of ‘Jimmy’ unfold. ‘Steve’ is still there as he is bouncing a lot of plates, but the plates begin to fall this season. He starts making little mistakes here and there. ‘Jimmy’ used to sweep things under the rug, but slowly this year, those things start to crawl out and reveal themselves.”
One of the dynamics of Jimmy that we see on the show is his relationship with Fiona (Emmy Rossum), and how he is able to go from one persona to the next without her even noticing. We asked Chatwin his opinion on if Jimmy really loves Fi, or if it is another con:
“When I watch it, I go, ‘I don’t know if I like or trust this guy.’ We, as an audience, are put in Fiona’s shoes of just being like, ‘What do you do with this guy who is fun and charming, but his actions are irresponsible?’ I think there are some people who go, ‘I love Jimmy/Steve because he is this, this and this.’ Others, however, go, ‘No, Jimmy/Steve is a d-bag because he DID this, this and this.’ That uncertainty is like a thrill for people; the mystery of ‘I can’t figure this guy out.’”
About two years ago, Justin took part in the Kiehl’s LifeRide for amfAR. This annual event is a nine-day charity motorcycle ride, and raises awareness about AIDS. Justin spoke with us about how he joined the cause:
“I ride motorcycles, and I had a friend invite me, who actually was on the first season of ‘Shameless.’ I learned a lot about amfAR while I was there. I got involved in the activity, and then became excited and supportive of the cause. Chris, who runs Kiehl’s, is really involved with amfAR. He does these motorcycle rides all over America to raise awareness about AIDS. He’s so passionate about it, and puts his company’s money into it. I just did a climb for clean water in Kilimanjaro, and it’s the same sort of thing. You go on a journey with people to talk and bring awareness, come up with ideas for campaigns to raise money to change things and make it better. I love what people are doing, as well as the corporate world. There are companies who are taking a big chunk of their money and saying, ‘We want to use this money to help make the world a better place.’”
“Shameless” airs every Sunday night at 9/8c on Showtime.
