I think you have really changed with the times, especially having Will's story, and the gay storyline, and the controversy with Kristen having sex, or "raping", a priest! And this is the kind of world we are in now, where I think soaps have to find a way to excite new and younger viewers to the fold.

This part of MF's question freaked the hell out of me. Kind of. Call me old fashioned, but if I had 8-15 yo children I wouldn't be very excited if they turned on TV just to see how "hot" it is when somebody is raping a priest ar a nun. And it's not the fact that they are having that s/l that scares me it's how they present/treat this. Sometimes I think porno is much more harmless than this kind of thing.
In general I'm not opposed to the genre of black comedy, but it has to be black comedy then.
The way I read it, he was talking about teens and young adults being drawn to watching the story, because it was shocking, not because it was hot.
I don't hate the story and I'm not offended by it, but I don't really see why this would excite new and younger viewers. At all.

Gotta push that envelope, ya know.
Exactly, and as for whoever said it ruins the perception of the show. It's a soap opera.....not Sesame Street.
Yeah, that was me (which isn't hard to figure out since I'm part of what you quoted and only three posts above yours), and I'm not an idiot. I'm fully aware that it's a show. Like I said, the show isn't the problem. It's the people who aren't fictional that are ruining the PERCEPTION of the show for me.
ditto here. it's the BTS perception that James & Ali are the king & queen of the show & if they ever become less than front & center the whole show will implode and the ratings will take a nose dive that's ruining things for me. It's like no one else in the cast is even half as important as those two. The show has been on the air for almost 50 years, and survived roughly 40 without James, and roughly 30 without Ali's presence at all.
The fact that KC states that they do what they can to make sure that there's never a visible break from Sami on screen while Ali's busy doing Biggest Loser-related things, just adds to that impression that no one else is important.
I'd like to think that TPTB ensure that when Kristian has jewelry shows & the like that require her to fly out on Thursdays & thus be unavailable on Friday, that she shoots her scenes ahead of time (or when she comes back on the Monday) and that Hope isn't just not written for in those episodes that are being shot when she's doing jewelry-related things. The same for Deidre when she was doing her book/make-up tour. However, i'm not convinced that that is the case. I do think that KC understands that Deidre & Kristian are still important to the shows & that's why their characters are still around (even though their on-screen other halves are MIA), but it would be nice to see them and others who have been on the show for decades the same treatment as they seem to be giving Ali.

as a young-ish viewer, the only thing exciting about Kristen basically raping Eric is the fact that we get to see Greg Vaughn without a shirt on.

This story seems like something from Passions which got great ratings with the 12 - 18 year old audience, partially because of the ridiculous stories. I don't know of any teens who watch soaps, so maybe the kids don't go for things like that these days, but I can see where MF may be coming from.

Well, that's not really my issue either. I don't agree with that but I'm kind of used to that misconception on their part. Granolgirl explained it well yesterday on twitter. Overall, I think it's playing out well onscreen, but then I get on twitter and days is pushing Kristen as the protagonist. That's what's taki away from the story for me. Days hasn't quite figured out the right balance with balance yet.

I guess. I just don't see why any teen would care about two people these actors ages playing a priest and a crazy lady, lol. If they were younger maybe. I like the story. But I'm not a new viewer and a lot of what I like has to do with the characters' backgrounds. Also, I can't imagine being interested in this story when I was younger mostly because there's not a bigger love story or something running through it. He may be right, I just don't see where the appeal would come in for someone who doesn't already have a longer term investment.

I think he believs the more sinnful, the more controversy, the more buzz, the better ratings. I heard the same argument about Ejami pairing a rapist with his victim, Im not sure if its true though.

Well, I'm watching Days right now, because one day when I was twelve or thirteen, I happened to see an episode about some old lady who was possessed by the devil and I stopped to watch it. Of course, by then, I'd already been watching a different soap for years, so probably not the average teen, especially compared to the kids today.

I can see that. I guess for me the Kristen/Eric stuff seems like nothing if you don't know the history of the characters. It was just normal random sex scenes.

That's what the story is missing. The epic love syory this screws with. Nicole and Eric are no where near epic. There is no real heroine in the story to connect with. It feels like a random attack. if its a war with Marlena she wants then take a direct hit.

I feel like Kristin's war against Marlena has been a trickle down war. Trying to hurt her in indirect ways instead of bringing the heat.

Every epic dual needs a strong good side and bad sides. Days continues to beef up the bad without investing in the good.

They should have taken the time to create a truly epic love story with Nicole and Eric before they ripped at them.

Part of what made the posession was the great love of Jarlena vs the grest evil of the devil. Same with the great evil of Stephano.

The audience must accept both greats. I accept the great evil of Kristin. I do not buy the great love of Ericole.

Im not religious so the priest thing doesnt bother me, but since I know that a lot of people are Im little suprised that they would go down that road with a priest, so yeah Eric being a priest makes it different from other rape/sex scenes.

I don't like how it was treated with the "or".

It was rape. It should clearly be referred to in those terms.

I assume you are joking.

But using a blowgun to drug someone is not just a "little odd" regardless of whether the person you are using it on is a priest.

Call that my Sonny PSA for the day.

Unless you have a documented agreement before hand that using a blowgun on the person to anasthetise them for the purpose of having sex with them is something that they consent to ITS NOT OK.

This is why media needs to be careful with the images that they put out there.

They have a pretty good returns policy.

Alternatively as long as you have a signed consent form you are good to go (priest, rabbi or imam).

Thinking about it it might be prudent to get the consent form witnessed by an independent person.
