Sami took several years off to manhop and make babies, but she's no stranger to the corporate world.
Huh? She went from Candy Striper to rapist to teen mother to man chaser, and then somehow got a job at the hospital that lasted an hour, and then somehow got a job at some fashion company (was it Kate's? I dunno where it was). Again, she had no skills to get any kind of job in corporate america. Maybe the mail room, but beyond that, she has no education, much less a business degree.
Sami has had jobs in corporate America. She was some kind of executive in the modeling department at Titan. She helped Austin run some kind of fashion company. She worked at Mad World. All jobs that she was not qualified for.

LOL great line from Ali about the fantasy world contract. How appropriate.
I'm starting to wonder if the modeling job is just a ruse set up by Nick. Maybe none of the modeling agencies were interested in Gabi, so Nick spoofed Sparkle Modeling's email address and sent a fake email to Gabi offering her a job. Nick could've hired an actress to play the modeling scout who talked with Gabi at the pub, and Nick is smart enough to create a fake modeling contract. And if Gabi had any questions about the contract, she'd just call the fake modeling scout who would answer Gabi's questions in the way that Nick had instructed. Then when Gabi gets to New York and realizes that there's no modeling job, maybe Nick is hoping that Gabi will be too embarrassed to return to Salem. And we know that Nick wants a job in New York, so maybe Nick's plan is to ask Gabi to move in with him after Gabi realizes that her modeling job doesn't exist. In that case, Nick would've positioned himself to be Gabi's knight in shining armor, and he'd have Gabi and Ari all to himself in New York. If the modeling job turns out to be fake, Gabi could use that info in her defense if she's ever arrested for bludgeoning Nick. (The fake modeling job would make her look sympathetic to a jury because the jury would see how Nick had been manipulating Gabi.)
See THAT is the question: is it a legitimate offer? I'm leaning towards yes, because after Nick submitted Gabi's "story" online, he wasn't getting any positive responses. He then changed his tactic and contacted the an agency himself. He pretended to be Lucas Horton, Executive, looking to rehire "Gabriella" exclusively for Kate's cosmetics firm. It's after this, that Gabi received the e-mail offer from sparkle. So, I'm guessing the reason the modeling agency, is giving Gabi the fairy tale contact is because they believe she's going to bring in a boat load of cash as THE model for Kate's cosmetic company I agree because I don't see how Nick could have any other influence over the modeling agencies to pressure them to hire Gabi.

I see what you're saying, about Sam not working up the ranks in that particular industry, but since, as you said, a lot of people on the show have started at the top instead of the bottom, and since Sami was already a corporate executive in the past, I don't see it as a major issue. At least not any more major than it would be for everybody else.
It was ridiculous in the past as well. Maybe if she had gone off for a few years and come back saying she graduated business school or something, I would buy it. But she's always been in Salem doing nothing but trying to snag herself a man. If only they gave business degrees for that talent, eh?
Ridiculous or not, it's not new. And at this point, it makes sense that she would have picked up skills on the job over the years. The initial post was about Sami having no skills for such jobs. She never would have qualified to GET the jobs she got, where you say she has gained experience. And yes, it happens all the time on soaps and every time it does it is ridiculous. It happens all the time on Y&R, and it drives me nuts. But with Sami it's just beyond. Like the other poster said, she doesn't even carry herself like a business woman. She has no grace or poise or sophistication what so ever. And when she talks business she looks and sounds like a fool.

Thing is, Sami's street smarts aren't particularly well-developed, either.

Marlena, you could have shown Brady the DVD in private, too.
And when was the last time we had even seen Brady giving Marlena the time of day?
Who knows. Perhaps she should have called him and told him about the DVD. Or watched it herself, first. Marlena brought this heartache on herself.
It is not Marlena heartache that concerns me in the least at this point or ever did. My real point was that Brady wasn't listening to anyone anyway and he wouldn't have give her the time of day to watch the DVD even given the chance. It would not matter how she or victor went about showing it to Brady, privately or publicly . I like Brady he was just being really stupid. For the record, I love the way they did the reveal and all the repercussion to everyone it make for great soap opera! :cheer: ITA,Brady was just plain stupid to see anything,no matter who told him,Victor should of told Marlena and then both of them could of to showed stupid Brady, once again writer's could of done it differently.

Seriously! Brady would have taken the DVD out of her hands and crushed it like he did later.
If Marlena gets that pass, Victor should, too. I agree. Never said otherwise. Brady is an idiot and both of them realized his brain had been Kristenized. But AGAIN, Marlena didn't know who was on the DVD, Victor did, and that is where the difference is.

It would be cheaper for them. I know this is a soap and we should not expect anything resembling reality but no agency will spend that much money on someone without any national name recognition. I agree with Carly that this whole thing might be Nick's work. He did not seem surprised about how generous the contract was. He looked like someone who was trying to act surprised. Also, maybe that's why Nick panics and attacks Gabi when she backs down. Maybe he spent too much money and is running out of options.

I think the degree to which Days can make women so desperate for men can be sexist, but in the big picture, most of the non-villainous male characters' storylines revolve around romance too. I mean, nobody's been as big a lovefool lately as Brady (we just seem to accept it as a valid character trait). I'd like it if relationships and interactions expanded beyond romance, so that every time you saw a male and a female character together in a scene you didn't automatically think "They must be ship-testing otherwise why would they write this scene?", but that obviously goes for both men and women.
I think it's kinda ironic though that the board consensus seems to be "The last time Abby was tolerable was when she was desperate about getting Austin" though, heh. Except all the non-villainous men have generally had careers or career aspirations.
I'm going to set aside the older generation of Hope, Kayla, Marlena, etc., because the 80s did a great job of making careers part of the female characters' development. Yes, their romances were part of the characters, but Hope becoming a cop, Kayla being a nurse and opening the clinic or the immunology lab, and Marlena treating patients were integral to their characters. None of the younger women have been shown to have career goals, with the possible exception of Jordan and now Gabi's on-again, off-again "I want to be a model" schtick. Sami has a job, but what she does is whatever the show decides is necessary for the plot; it's not character driven. So if they need her to work with EJ, suddenly, she's an executive at DiMera. Need her to butt heads with Kate, have Sami replace her at Countess Wilhemina. Abby? Who knows. Theresa? She's doing a menial job because the court has ordered her to. Nicole? She once had a career in broadcasting, but hey, she'll gladly work at the church. The last female character with any semblance of a career was Madison.
Now compare that to the men. EJ is the heir-apparent at DiMera. Brady is an executive at Titan. Sonny has his own business. Chad co-owned the club. Cameron was a doctor. Will had the website and is now an aspiring writer. Daniel is super-doctor extraordinaire. Eric is a priest. Even Nick, the convicted murderer, immediately got jobs and was shown to be pretty effective working for Kate. The only younger male character who doesn't have a job or career aspirations right now is JJ, and he's in high school.
So what we have had is a generation of aimless women, who don't have any direction. Their focus then becomes solely devoted to the men they are chasing/clinging to and to having children. And the show portrays that as if it is what women should aspire to. We are constantly bombarded with how wonderful children and motherhood are, as if that should be the sum total goal of a woman's existence. There was a scene a few weeks ago where Nick had encouraged Gabi to pursue modeling and she then was holding Adrianna and said that all of her dreams were right there, i.e., in being a mother. Thankfully, she has changed her mind, but it is a ridiculously old-fashioned and out-of-touch sentiment that may help explain why Days' demos are so low. Do young women really relate to these female characters? The young women I know who are in the 18-25 range are focused about college, careers, and paying back student loans than starting a family, even those that are in relationships. Amazingly, the young female characters in the 80s were far more progressive in terms of balancing work and life than today's characters. It's like someone several years ago decided that the show needed to go back to the 60s when it came to sending a message about what women want in life -- and that message has no relation to the world in which we actually live.

The head writers and several producers are males in their late 50s and early 60s. That could have something to do with the old-fashioned idea of what a woman's place in life should be.

Yes, the young women should have careers. But having a career is not the only yardstick of feminism, it just happens to be one of the more prominent ones of second wave white western feminism. I wouldn't say that it erases the 80s' ridiculous penchance for having practically every single female character a victim of sexual assault. You can't just point to one thing and say it makes the whole era more progressive. At least, I don't see how. It's a very multi-variable thing.
ETA: I just noticed you qualified your assessment strictly to the work-family balance, I'm sorry I didn't notice that before. I still think it's kinda ironic to see "Abby's best recent incarnation was when she was obsessed with Austin" and "It's the writers' fault for being misogynistic, look at how they deprive the women of career ambitions and make them revolve around chasing dick as proof" in the same thread, but then I realize that there are a lot of different people talking here too.

And defrocked sounds super-sexy. I think I'm conflating "defrocked" and "unclothed" or "de-pantsed." Or "naked and rumpled and ready for action."
See you all at the gate.

So, I'm guessing the reason the modeling agency, is giving Gabi the fairy tale contact is because they believe she's going to bring in a boat load of cash as THE model for Kate's cosmetic company
But why spend all the money on relocating her to New York when the cosmetic agency that supposedly wants her is located in Salem? It would be cheaper for them. I know this is a soap and we should not expect anything resembling reality but no agency will spend that much money on someone without any national name recognition. I agree with Carly that this whole thing might be Nick's work. He did not seem surprised about how generous the contract was. He looked like someone who was trying to act surprised. Also, maybe that's why Nick panics and attacks Gabi when she backs down. Maybe he spent too much money and is running out of options. Because once she's finished modeling for Kate's company in Salem, then they are going to try her out for bigger things in NYC. IIRC, that's the gist of what the lady from sparkle told Gabi. As to Nick not seeming surprised, I'm sure he's been back in contact w/ the agency pretending to be Lucas pushing for them to fill his cosmetics company's needs by doing whatever it takes. Besides, the Sparkle rep. specifically mentioned reading Gabi's story [that's posted on line]. She knew exactly what it would take - contract wise - to secure what she believes will be a cash cow. As for reality, I learned a long time to not get bogged down in the writers' employment of artistic license.

I didn't use the phrase feminism and don't intend to turn this thread into a debate about white western feminism, though, since nearly every leading female character is white and western, I'm not sure why careers isn't a reasonable yardstick to use. Regardless of whether you consider it feminism or modern life, younger women have far more career opportunities today than they had in the 60s and 70s, and most young women today plan on having jobs and careers. Yet the idea of planning for a future career seems foreign to the young women on Days -- something that (1) is different between the women and the men; and (2) is quite a contrast even to how the women in the 1980s viewed work. I remember a scene in 1990 when Kayla, shortly after having Stephanie returned from being kidnapped, told Kim that she wanted to return to work because it was so important to her. It wasn't that she needed the money; it was that Kayla didn't feel completely fulfilled by being a stay-at-home mother. I can't imagine today's Days ever suggesting that motherhood is not 100% fulfilling for any young woman. It would probably cause Ken Corday and Bruce Evans to stroke out if someone had a female character say that she has no desire to have children and is quite satisfied without them -- unless she is an evil bitch, because then it she doesn't "deserve" them.
As for sexual assault and abuse, that has hardly disappeared from the show. Sami was raped, Nicole was forced to do porn by her stepfather, we recently had Chloe being forced into prostitution, Stephanie was raped. Gabi will soon be attacked by Nick. And I hardly find it a sign of progress that the women are now doing the raping, e.g., Sami raping Austin and Kristen raping Eric.

To be clear I hardly think that Days is a great example of progressive storytelling, not now, and not in the past. I think Dena Higley and JER had extremely anti-progressive (and unfeminist, feminism generally falls under the umbrella of progressivism) streaks and they came on in the 90's and onwards (personally my biggest grudge when it comes to depiction of female characters has always been with JER, but that has more to do with sexual politics than careers ... not that I considered him great on that front either).. I just don't like whittling it down to one issue, as far as I've been able to suss out every decade of soaps have had their issues while probably thinking at the time that they were doing a really good job. But like I added to my previous post, I noticed that you had qualified your assessment and apologized for not reading your post carefully enough.
I've always been generally favorable of the young women on the show getting career ambitions. FWIW, and this is tangential now, but I do think that the 80s were worse when it comes to sexual violence, for all that things are far from perfect now. Two women raping men does not equal the number of men who have raped women, not that rape should be used as some kind of equalizer, but interestingly enough I saw a comment on the board a few days ago that commended DAYS for pointing out that rape does happen to men too and that it's still wrong. So, looks like there's a few ways to parse that development.

Okay, so today's show:
The good * More Carver/Walker connections! * Ericole :wub2: * Sassy yet concerned Nicole! * Victor's Snark and Marlena's Slap :fight: * Sonny's apology * Will trying to train Sami -- "No, no. Drop that! Sit! Heel!" Okay, maybe not those last two. * Abby/EJ vibes. Please let her turn her Austin-level obsessions to EJ. It would be kind of amazing. * That baby!
The bad * Anything involving the sound of Abby's voice. She does need something to do -- if not a career, then a hobby or a passion or a cause. She was so much better when she was actively seen going to college. * Magniel/Daggie * Dan's constipation.
Special mention: * Sami's inability to read EJ. I used to be a big Sami fan. Not so much anymore. I wish she'd learn how to read EJ a little better. She was pretty sharp yesterday, but she still hasn't figured out how to play him. He was so upset at the thought of her leaving him. Now he has the upper hand because he knows his indifference drives her insane. I'd love for her to wake up and walk out. He'd pursue her once he realized she wasn't playing him.
Note: I'm not actually rooting for them, but it aggravates me to see him be so smug. I'd much rather see him fall on his ass, even if it means Sami wins.
* Dan/Nicole kiss. I was okay with this if it meant Nicole was being pursued. I am not cool with her being the kisser and him being the kissee. Tomorrow he had better get into it and be the kisser, then let her pull back and decide it's better not to repeat old patterns. :headbang:

I feel like "defrocked" will be next year's "flashdrive".
only "defrocked" is 1000x sexier than "flashdrive". lol. (and i'm definitely gonna need Ciara's views on Father Eric's temporary defrocking. lol. writers, i hope you're not gonna disappoint me! ;) )
Well, since the whole flower-girl-at-Kristen's-wedding thing fell through, maybe Eric getting a step closer to marrying her will be a good consolation. :) And defrocked sounds super-sexy. I think I'm conflating "defrocked" and "unclothed" or "de-pantsed." Or "naked and rumpled and ready for action." See you all at the gate. I'll bring Dr. Pepper for us. Big Gulp, of course.
This is the sort of thing that makes me love Days: the chance to use the word "defrocked." Just like when I had the chance to use the word defenestration in reference to Emilio's death.
Women being "focused" on getting a particular man is a staple of soaps. I get that. It's can get annoying, the same way that having every man who enters the zip code fall madly in love with, say Reva on Guiding Light, gets annoying.
I don't find Sami as a cosmetics executive all that outrageous given that this is Salem and the whole town should be doing serious jail time. This is the same place where Lexie went from being a police officer to being a full-on doctor without any hint of medical school or a medical internship. The same place where Kim Brady Donovan - hooking, multi-personality, man-killing, brother-shooting Kim - was a therapist. I loved Lexie and Kim but really? I also can't imagine anyone trusting their psychological well-being to Satan's former vessel but darn it, Mar's the only psychiatrist in Salem and this town NEEDS one.
And let's not forget Austin who has been (drum-roll please) a jazz pianist, a bookie, a boxer, a graduate student, the host of a talk show with Jennifer (that was all in his first year, btw), the inventor of a non-gas car and a forensic accountant. You go, multi-careered-Austin.
The only character I find even vaguely believable in their profession is Eric. I could totally understand why he'd want to avoid marriage after growing up in Salem.

Yes, I know the difference and never said otherwise, and yet here we are. :) If it was okay for Marlena to show the video, then it should also be okay for Victor to let Marlena show the video.

Brady has given Victor a pass already. Too bad he can't do the same for the woman who raised him from toddlerhood.... Yes he has, and it is, but I'm not talking about Brady. I'm talking about the idea that Marlena doesn't deserve any of the scorn that Victor supposedly does. If there was no time and the video had to come out at the time it did, then Victor shouldn't be expected to have told Marlena who was in the video in advance.
