I fail to see how Ali leaving automatically means James is leaving. It's not like James only likes working with Ali. He's been pretty vocal about enjoying working with his other female co-stars as well. I don't think it automatically means anything. But JS has often said that he plans on leaving acting in the very near future. He had difficult contract negotiations a couple years ago. And he's said on more than one occasion that he wants EJ and Sami to end up together. Put that all together and I don't think it's weird that people are at least discussing the possibility of him leaving too. I still think it's more likely that he stays rather than goes, but it's not like the speculation is baseless.

The renewal announcement usually comes during the NBC Winter Press Tour (that was last week), and there was NO announcement made about renewal at this years event (while other networks DID make announcements for their shows during their Winter Press Tours)
Actually, the "Days" renewal announcement has NEVER came during the Winter Press Tour. As my history of contracts page shows: http://www.jason47.com/days/dayscontracts.htmlLast year, January 2013, was the first time a renewal ever happened in January, and it was announced during the 12,000th episode week on a Wednesday, not during the TCA itself. UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – January 09, 2013 – On the heels of celebrating its 12,000th episode, NBC has extended its long-running daytime drama "Days of our Lives" for an additional year, taking the show through September 2014 and past its 48th year anniversary in November 2013. The extension was announced today by Jennifer Salke, President, NBC Entertainment. The 12,000th episode will air this Friday, January 11. The other recent contract renewals were announced in November 2010, March 2010 (the pickup of the option year), November 2008, June 2003 and September 1998: UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. November 8, 2010 NBC has picked up its daytime drama "Days of our Lives" which is celebrating its 45th season today on NBC -- for two more years through the 2012-13 season. The announcement was made today by Jeff Gaspin, Chairman, NBC Universal Television Entertainment. "Days of our Lives" remains vitally creative through the years as it continues to draw new generations of viewers, especially among its loyal female audience" said Gaspin. NBC Press Release: (3/19/10) NBC has picked up hit daytime drama "Days of our Lives" for its 45th season, keeping the long-running show on the network through the 2010-11 television season, it was announced today by Marc Graboff, Chairman, NBC Entertainment and Universal Media Studios. "'Days of our Lives' continues to be a favorite of the daytime audience and we are thrilled to keep it going through its 45th season," said Graboff. "'Days' has shown year-to-year increases in key female demographics and remains both relevant and fresh creatively." Bruce Evans, Senior Vice President, Drama Programming, NBC Entertainment, added, "The producers, cast and crew have worked tirelessly to make 'Days' the ratings success it is today. Today's renewal is a true testament to all of their hard work. We could not be more delighted for them and for the multiple generations of fiercely loyal 'Days of our Lives' fans." The acclaimed daytime drama will celebrate its 45th anniversary on Monday, November 8. Variety Article (11/11/08) NBC has inked a deal with Sony Pictures TV to extend its run of daytime sudser "Days of Our Lives." But in a sign of uncertain times for the daytime soap biz, the Peacock's pickup runs just 18 months. The previous renewal pact between Sony and Corday Prods. had a five-year term. NBC's current deal for "Days of Our Lives" was set to expire in March, which means the new arrangement will keep the soap on the network only through September 2010. However, it's understood that another year will be triggered if certain perameters on the show are met. That would keep "Days" on the air through September 2011. Variety Article: (6/2/03) NBC and Sony Pictures Television have inked a five-year deal worth nearly $500 million to keep hit sudser "Days of Our Lives" on the Peacock through May 2009. In addition, former "Days" head scribe Jim Reilly -- who left to create NBC sudser "Passions" -- has signed on to oversee writing on both skeins. Ken Corday will continue to exec produce "Days," the saga of the Horton and Brady families created by his parents nearly 40 years ago. Both pacts were engineered on the Peacock side by NBC senior VP of daytime Sheraton Kalouria, who's also been doing some dealmaking on his own behalf: Exec has just reupped for another three years as head of the daytime unit. Deal for "Days" was negotiated quietly over the past few months -- a dramatic departure from five years ago, when NBC and Sony engaged in a prolonged license fee battle that had Sony and Corday Prods. seriously considering moving the skein to another network. The two sides ultimately inked a deal that hiked the show's license fee nearly 50%. This time around, the changing economics of daytime TV -- specifically, declining Nielsen numbers for almost all sudsers -- resulted in a less contentious dealmaking process. Indeed, NBC's business affairs team, led by topper Marc Graboff, managed to strike a deal with Sony calling for a reduced license fee. Peacock now will shell out roughly $1.7 million-$1.8 million per week for "Days," down from the nearly $1.9 million the net had been paying. That figure still makes "Days" the most expensive sudser in daytime and is well above the $1.2 million NBC paid for "Days" years ago. Net also agreed to another five-year deal -- a big guarantee of security for Sony and Corday Prods. in a universe of shrinking sudser auds. Variety Article: (9/25/98) SAN ANTONIO -- Columbia TriStar and NBC will announce today that "Days of Our Lives" will be staying at the Peacock for many days to come, barring any last-minute snags. While a deal had not been signed late Thursday, the studio and the web have hammered out most of the details of a five-year agreement that will keep the long-running soap on NBC until 2004, ending months of media reports speculating that "Days" might jump networks. Insiders estimate NBC will pay a license fee of between $1.6 and $1.8 million per week -- about $360,000 per hourlong epi-sode -- for the right to broadcast the daily shenanigans that take place in the show's fictional town of Salem. That's an increase of approximately 50% from the roughly $1.2 million per week NBC has reportedly been paying. NBC also has an option to renew the show, which has been with the Peacock since its 1965 bow, for another five years. While both sides always indicated a desire to keep "Days" on NBC, both ABC and CBS had expressed interest in stealing away the sudser, with the Alphabet web making the most serious play for the show. ABC's bid for "Days" may have been hampered, according to sources, by the web's refusal to give Columbia TriStar a financial stake in All My Soaps, an all-suds cabler now being tested by ABC in several markets. Still, ABC remained a wild card in the negotiations right up to the end of the renewal saga, and could reemerge as a player should there be some unexpected hitch before a deal is inked. In addition to money, a major area of contention had been exclusivity. The Peacock and its affiliates have been upset over Columbia TriStar's decision earlier this year to begin offering same-day repeats of "Days" to DirecTV satellite subscribers. It's unclear whether the studio will drop its DirecTV offer as part of the new agreement, though sources at the studio have said for months that the satellite repeats were not lucrative enough to stand in the way of a deal with NBC. Any renewal deal for "Days" could spell bad news for NBC's other veteran sudser, "Another World." The Peacock has been actively developing a new soap, and many believe the new soap might replace the low-rated "World" sometime next year. The official press release by NBC came after it was already revealed at the press-tour that the show was being renewed by NBC Boss Robert Greenblatt:
- Quote:
-
Addressing the fate of its only daytime soap, NBC Chairman Robert Greenblatt expressed confidence that Days of Our Lives would remain on the air beyond its current contract cycle, which expires in September.
“I think Days is going to stick around,” Greenblatt told reporters Sunday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour in Pasadena. “I don’t know that I’m at liberty to say that officially yet, but it’s not going anywhere.”
Seems strange that no announcement was made about the show at this years event.
Especially with the show taping so far in advance now.
Hopefully word of a pick-up comes soon...I want to see the show continue...but this Sweeney news 100% set off my "cancellation radar"....I hope I am WAY OFF.
I want to see a Sami-free DAYS OF OUR LIVES again!

If there was a strong chance Days wasn't going to be renewed, doesn't it seem... impolitic of Ali not to keep her plans under wraps longer? Didn't ABC lead OLTL/AMC to believe they had a lot longer than they actually did, just before cancelling them? I sort of remember something about TSJ quitting a few months before the network cancelled the show, then offering to stay until the show ended.

Im sorry, but there is no way Sweeney would be leaving if she thought the show would cease production in April or May. If anything she is leaving because they were mapping out the next year or two of story and she decided it would be better to announce she was leaving now than further in the year when her contract negotiations would start. Honestly she is probably announcing this early to HELP TPTB give a proper exit and and time.
I wouldn't be surprised if the show receives more than a one year renewal. It makes no sense that she would leave if the show was getting canned. Why even bother announcing it since everyone would be leaving.

Seems strange that no announcement was made about the show at this years event. That was partly due to the reporters I guess, who cared more about other shows this year. NBC executives held one "free-for-all" session at the TCA, where reporters could ask basically about any shows, as they did with Parks and Recreation, Celebrity Apprentice, Community, etc.... If a reporter had simply asked something about "Days", we would have had some sort of response at the TCA. He unofficially talked about the show's future at last year's TCA because someone asked him about it, but I guess this year no one did. The actual announcement came afterwards, so it's more likely we'd hear something later this week (or maybe not until next week since Days is dark this week).

Im bummed because in the back of my mind, I just always thought and hoped I would get to see Lumi together again. For real together. sigh... You know a year is a long time when it comes to it and we really don't know how long Days has known about this already...it just can't be a coincidence that Rafe is moving on to Jordan while Sheryl is only going to be around for a little while and EJ is doing Abby now, so who knows what will happen in regards to any of her pairings....including Lumi

Alison Sweeney leaving 'Days of Our Lives,' says Sami Brady 'probably deserves' 'Breaking Bad'-style ending After 21 years playing the sometimes-villainous, sometimes-heroic Sami Brady on "Days of Our Lives," "Biggest Loser" host Alison Sweeney tells "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" that it's time to say goodbye. "I decided that it's going to be my last year with the show," says Sweeney. " ... I've been on 'Days of Our Lives' since I was 16 years old and I have never had more than a two-week vacation in that whole time. I mean, it's so awesome. I love Sami, I love Salem, I love my job, I love daytime, I love the fans, I love everything about it." "[But] my daughter just turned five and my son is nine and I just want to be with them and enjoy my last year," Sweeney continues. "I'm going to be on 'Days' all this year. ... We don't have a specific time yet [for when I'm leaving], but I'm going to be on all this year and we'll see what happens." As for the ending, Sweeney says that while she thinks it would be awesome to have "some kind of happy ending," she also thinks Sami "probably deserves some sort of very twisted, like 'Breaking Bad' ending." "Well, she's caused a lot of people a lot of problems," says Sweeney. " ... Sami has certainly caused her fair share of drama over the last 21 years." How do you think Sami should be sent off, "Days of Our Lives" fans? http://blog.zap2it.com/pop2it/2014/01/alison-sweeney-leaving-days-of-our-lives-says-sami-brady-probably-deserves-breaking-bad-style-ending.html Omg! I can't believe it! Are you people pulling my leg? Never thought this day would come! :applause:
In all honesty, I never wished for AS to leave the show for good. I just wished for like a 6 month break, so eventually, I'll probably miss her. She was one of my favorite characters for a good 15 years. So IF they killed her off, I'm sure it would be a good SL, but I'm kinda hoping she goes to be with her REAL TRUE LOVE Brandon Walker. :wub2: Come on Days, make it happen! I don't think Matt Cedeno is doing anything at the moment.
I do not think going to happened with kids no matter how shitty mother Sami was written it either Sami being kill off or Sami run with one her baby daddy and kidnap the kid of whoever man she not with or being sent to jail I'm pretty sure Brandon is supposed to be in Chicago, so the kids could still be around to visit with Lucas & EJ.

I just feel if the show is getting cancelled that Sami will get her happy ending, whether with Ej, Rafe, or Lucas...but if they get a 2 year renewal and the show makes it to 50, then the chances of her dying so she can return later are very high. Sort of like Robin at GH.....

IDK, I just remember going through the nail-biting in 2005 (?), and 2008 or 9 when the trends and buzz for the show were much worse, and it's still here.
One day it really will be the end, but not because any of us didn't worry about it enough. ;)

If she gets killed off, her body is definitely going to be mysteriously missing.

Count me among those who will be sad to see Sami go. I thought for sure AS would go down with the ship whenever that happens. I was not always a fan of the character. For a very long time she was the one I loved to hate. Then EJ showed up in Salem and those two sucked me in. I have rooted for her (and them) ever since. In a way I hope she gets her happy ending, but her death would also affect almost everyone onscreen and could be super soapy. Whatever they decide to do I hope it's given a lot of thought and the character gets an epic send off and a great story for the fans. Good luck Ali! You will be missed by this fan!

I am also wondering why everyone seems certain NBC will see this show to its 50th anniversary....I know it is only 2 years away...but if the show is losing money for NBC, no way in hell they just give it a pass for 2 years to get it to 50. Has NBC ever commented about getting it to 50? Or are we all just assuming NBC will be that nice :) (and if that is the case...you know what they say about assuming!)
I don't think it's assuming, I call it confidence. Also, the fact is that the ratings are up, and if the show wasn't cancelled in 2011 when they were actually horrible and abysmal, I don't think they'll do it now. It also cannot be forgotten that no matter the ratings the show garnered extreme praise for it's improvement last year. Even though ratings are the eventual clincher, the portion of positive media cannot be underestimated. Like take GH for instance, yes they have had gains but they have been slow, yet the show is doing better than ever and just last week the head of ABC something said that he wants for GH to be on a long time. I believe at least half of GH's success and reneissance has been due to the positive and highly profiled press and media. Mitch, I believe the show is doing better than it has been for some time although not raking in a ton of money.
That said, the bigger issue is does NBC have a viable replacement in DAYS timeslot??? Launching daytime tvshows is extremely difficult--look at the high rate of shows failing every season. It's also extremely expensive to launch a new show successfully. So until NBC has an option that it thinks can outperform DAYS financially, I think they'll stick with the show.
Nothing coming out in the entertainment trades or TCA has indicated that NBC is developing new programming for daytime. That doesn't mean it isn't happening, but the financial trade off has to be worth it to cancel. And NBC has seen the other networks struggle to find replacements for their cancelled soaps. . .so I don't think they'll be rushing to ax DAYS until after the 50th.
EVEN if NBC cancelled DAYS, Sony owns the show and could shop it to another network or even cable channel to continue. But the network wouldn't continue with fan events like DAY OF DAYS if they were thinking of pulling the plug. Once they decide a show is dead, they basically stop spending ANY money on promoting it. . .

Of course there is a chance this show could cease production in May and stop airing in September but this just doesnt seem likely with this announcement. She is contracted to December 2014 and even if the show was cancelled it would stop taping this spring. Doesn't make sense that she would announce an exit if she was going to film until the show would end.

Once they decide a show is dead, they basically stop spending ANY money on promoting it. . . Which I agree with...a cancellation at this point would be certainly against the grain...especially considering we got previous renewals (someone mentioned the one in 2008/2009...that WAS a nail biter and realistically should have ended with DAYS cancellation) during what probably SHOULD HAVE ended up with DAYS getting the axe.
I am just nervous we have not gotten an announcement yet and this exit by Sweeney has only exacerbated that....I can't even be totally happy about this exit until I know the show is not going down with its precious Samanther.

Honestly, I don't think Ali Sweeney has any knowledge about whether Days of our Lives is gonna be renewed or cancelled. Usually the actors know about these kind of things pretty much at the same time as the rest of the world, unless they are producing the show. She probably assumes that DAYS will keep going but she doesn't really know.

" ... Sami has certainly caused her fair share of drama over the last 21 years." How do you think Sami should be sent off, "Days of Our Lives" fans? http://blog.zap2it.com/pop2it/2014/01/alison-sweeney-leaving-days-of-our-lives-says-sami-brady-probably-deserves-breaking-bad-style-ending.html My first thought was...
My Heart Is Full! LOL
After that I think it's about that time, I hope she spreads her wings into movies I think she could. I can imagine it's been hard to embrace motherhood going 90 to nothing. I hope the fans still tune in because I think JS has the acting skills to spread his wings and fly. I've watched favs come in and favs go out, and I think there are potential women on this show that could really act and hopefully will be given a true shot at it. I know her fans will truley miss her, and who can blame them. I lost my Sami Brady years ago, and I missed the woman she was, I hoped she could be again, but good luck to AS.
No gruesome death unless it's someone she's scourned, nah, maybe a car crash, or another baby and she dies in child birth. She goes to prison for all the wrong she's done. Really, lets not kill her off.
Wait I got it...give Alison Sweeney her own talk show....ooh that's good!!

I think I'm going to have to start whipping out my Lumi banners ya'll...and I so didn't want to do that but this announcement has thrown me for a loop...I still need the real Sami to return after this doppelganger Sami dies...but I'm all nostalgic for Lumi all of a sudden... *sniff* I may have to follow your lead LL.
