All, or almost all of the recently canceled soaps have gone off the air in September. So if there's a chance the show isn't renewed, Ali's announcement is probably moot.
This.

I wish Ali good luck, I think she deserves it. She's a very intelligent, beautiful, abitious and talented young woman who can retire at 37 and spend the rest of her live with her family on the money earned and work only if she wants to. She lives the true American dream.

Personally I do hope that she goes out Breaking Bad style. It would be poetic justice IMO.
Yep, I want Sami to go out DEAD. Really DEAD. Isabella DEAD!

I always figured that if they ended the character of Sami and didnt want to kill her off they would go the route of letting her lose her mind. Go on a killing spree, make it look like someone else, and in the end lock her in a padded room away from all good people of Salem.

Or be the victim of a serial killer like Marlena sister and Sami's Aunt, Samantha. She was killed by the Salem Strangler mistaken for Marlena.

Apparently AS doesn't want a recast for her character and this could be a good outing.

So like, obviously she's not leaving to spend more time with her kids. She hasn't cared much about spending time with them in the past.

What are the possibilities?

1) NBC is giving her a new show and removing her from Days.

2) NBC is renewing Days but cutting funds which lowers Ali's salary enough that she wants/is forced to leave.

3) An entity other than NBC has pressured Days to cut Ali as a contingency of the (probable) renewal.

4) Ali has another career plan (movies?) and wants to leave.

Any other ideas? The fact that she mentions her kids makes it very clear to me that there's some other reason behind it.
Dear god, I hope NBC doesn't have a crazy plan to cancel DOOL and do a SAMI spinoff. :'(

I'll miss the character of Sami, they'll need to replace a bad girl, troublemaker.
I think that's what they are trying to do with Theresa and maybe even Abby. It's too bad because they have a natural in Ciara but if the show lasts I hope they take her darker because that little girl is too creepy to waste on simple boyfriend stealing.
I definitely see Theresa as Sami's successor. She's even got herself a hot frenemy that she alternately schemes with or blackmails.

Abby, not so much. She does way too much hand-wringing to ever be a bad girl. The only thing she may inherit from Sami is EJ's penis.
LOL why do I picture this being said at her will reading?

I was at work when I read this news and it was a LONG day but thinking about it for awhile....this IS some big news! As much as I never thought AS would be so front burner for 21 years, I still never thought I'd read "ALISON SWEENEY OUT!!" Like it or not, she was chosen for whatever reason to be the modern day face of Days and she's done that. I don't blame her at all for leaving and I'd bet my sack she will come back some time down the road even if it's just for a small arc when the show goes off the air. They will not recast this character....yes this is Days but noooo they aren't that stupid. I do wonder what will happen with all her children. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out but as I said earlier in this thread, I really do appreciate that AS gave 21 years of her life to this show and character. I literally watched her grow and as much as I get annoyed with Sami (and not so much in a good way anymore), it has been a huge part of my life I've "shared" with her. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the writing room to hear what they plan for this exit!

I kind of blame Corday for using sami too much. he should have known that someday she might want to leave. They shouldn't have relied so much on sami. I think the show will survive though don't worry. she might be bak she just needs a break. I kind of wish she had this vacation or left along time ago. This wasn't the sami i liked. It seems like she has been phoning in her scenes as well. she just doesn't seem to have the energy like she use to.
I think this show will flourish without her. I have never bought into the notion that Sami/AS is all that and a box of Bon Bons.

I really don't care how she leaves. My preference would be for her to be treated like all the other vets when they leave, but she hasn't been treated like a vet yet, so I doubt they'll start then.
Oh man, you're bringing out my evil side. I would love it if she did a Don Craig!

Also...I really can't see an ending where Sami just leaves town. Sami wouldn't move because she loves the Salem drama. Sami would only move if she had to...like something happened and she had to enter a witness protection program. Or maybe end game WILL be Ejami and they move to Europe together. Then there's also prison which would crack me up because WTF could Sami do to actually GET in prison considering the things she's done that hasn't fully sent her there. OR...what if the dude that played Stan returns and we get THAT?! Lol.

Does anyone know when James Scott's contract is up?
I think May.
I think it's in November now. It shifted when he had those contract negotiations in 2011. I think.
All this James Scott contract talk has me worried.

Now that I actually give a fig about EJ, I don't want him disappearing.
I wonder though, does Elvis have a place on this show without his evil counterpart? Has he ever had a story without her in it?

I hope Days doesn't pull a Chandler Massey on her!!!
She probably discussed it with them before announcing the news.

But they probably could just decide to let her go at anytime if that is a clause in her contract. Unless she has a better contract than Chandler did. It is the "Sami Brady Show" is it not?

Ha. I was just going to post this exact thing. Especially if she did this announcement without the blessing of the network/executives.

I am not worried about NOT hearing a renewal announcement. NBC has been working hard to rebuild its primetime (with some degree of success). Right now, the network is likely obsessed with the upcoming Winter Olympics, especially since there is so much concern that something dramatic could happen, terrorism-wise.

Plus, NBC Late Night is going through a major revamp and the Today Show is still failing to meet expectations. Those late night and early morning hours are substantially more critical to the network. Starting up a new daytime hour is expensive and risky, especially given the recent high-profile failures. I do think NBC wants to get in the business of a View-style or Talk-style chat show. I don't watch the third hour of Today, but apparently that is their new angle.

Getting back to the AS departure: I do think this change was part of the renewal negotiations. The show was likely going to need to cut its most expensive actor. I also think that AS wants to do other things and recognized that her departure would free up money that could be used to keep the show going. She saw what happened to the DH's a few years ago. She understands how the business works. She has written scripts (to some disdain/horror) and directed episodes (to some merit). Most actors aren't into those aspects of the business.

Since she is allegedly filming all the way until December 2014, it's possible we could see pre-taped scenes of her well into 2015......sitting quietly in Safe House II or as she is held captive on some remote island, watching Salem from a DiMera laptop, waiting for the Three Amigos to rescue her.

Elvis should be able to have massive story without Sami. It's amazing to me that the character of Elvis Dimera's adult onscreen history has revolved totally around Sami. I'm hoping thanks to AS's decision, we can finally see who EJ really is! Or he can go too and we can utilize characters that have long been needed on the front portion of the stove.

I do think they should bring back Carrie and Austin to help beef this age group up. I could see James Scott leaving as well.

Weren't there rumors awhile back of Ali getting her own talk show or at least a seat on a new show, something akin to The View or The Talk?
OMG, no. She never shuts up. The nation's ears would be a bloody mess. I got annoyed just listening to her blabbing on Ellen today.

Another psrson steals my idea.... I actually think it would be a riot to have a scene at the end where she announces that she has a letter to mail and exits. As everyone does a doubletake and muses "who writes letters anymore", she returns through the door and complains about some old bum who was camped out at the mailbox, yammering about being a forgotten lawyer.

There was a 4 month period from July 2011 to November 2011 when he wasn't involved in some way, shape or form with Sami. That's it. 4 months in the 92 months he's been on the show.

I dont think her leaving had to do with a renewal guarantee. The show will probably be renewed 1-2 years and therefore they are starting to brainstorm into 2015 and beyond (they have already taped almost half of 2014). I think Sweeney just wanted out and knew the show would probably need a good notice to end her story properly and to make the necessary creative changes.

I think we are in for some big changes for this show in the next year, especially towards the second half when they start filming 2015. Aren't there alot of contracts up this year? (Deidre, James, Kristian, etc.)

I'm no Sami/AS fan but this reeks of doom for Days, IMO.
I definitely don't think it is a good sign. No renewal information and now their biggest star is leaving. I hope we get more information soon.
NBC really needs to announce whether or not they are renewing Days.

While AS leaving the show doesn't mean the show won't survive but.
maybe she is privy to info about Days future.
What I want to know is why is she announcing this on Ellen ?
I wondered about that too. Did she just use her scheduled appearance on Ellen as an opportunity to make the announcement or did she and her reps arrange for her to appear on Ellen for this purpose. To me it smells of a publicity stunt. Most soap stars announce they're leaving with a blurb in the soap mags and websites. But she needs to announce it on a show watched by millions? Is she hoping Hollywood will send out the big offers?

I am a Sami fan so I will be very sad to see AS leave but as I posted about Kimberley Mc leaving GH yesterday, nothing stays the same forever and I wish Alison every success for her future projects.

As for Days I am sure it will be renewed. I feel as if that the announcement by Alison on Ellen along with the story feature in Soap Opera Digest is all part of a well managed and well planned media event. There is plenty of buzz to all this which of course brings plenty of free publicity so I expect ( and I am only speculating) that there will be an annoucement soon about what is happenning for the future of Days of Our Lives and I am sure it will be positive news.

( Lol I hope so anyway!!!! )

^ My face watching DAYS

From a time when I LOVED to hate Sami...her best wedding to date...when she finally lost Austin for good! The last minute was YEARS AND YEARS of payoff for me! Watching Sami beg in a screaming heap on the floor with Marlena and Roman...Kate's smug satisfied face...Austin being totally and absolutely done with her....JUSTICE!
