Sami has always been a character I love to hate. I always thought I wanted Sami gone, but now that she will be, I'm strangely sad. Oh dear. Could it be that hating Sami is actually one of the things I love most about watching Days?

Anyway, best of luck to AS.

So like, obviously she's not leaving to spend more time with her kids. She hasn't cared much about spending time with them in the past.

What are the possibilities?

1) NBC is giving her a new show and removing her from Days.

2) NBC is renewing Days but cutting funds which lowers Ali's salary enough that she wants/is forced to leave.

3) An entity other than NBC has pressured Days to cut Ali as a contingency of the (probable) renewal.

4) Ali has another career plan (movies?) and wants to leave.

Any other ideas? The fact that she mentions her kids makes it very clear to me that there's some other reason behind it.
She was caught having sex with the guy who plays Peter Blake and her husband is forcing her to leave?

Also a note, if it is NBC dictating this, it's not necessarily a good sign, much as I'm thrilled to see Ali go. It could be a sign that they're kind of shutting down the show gradually. I am NOT saying the show needs her - I don't think it does. But NBC doesn't agree with me on that!

Does anyone know when James Scott's contract is up?
I think May.
I think it's in November now. It shifted when he had those contract negotiations in 2011. I think.
That would mean he extended for 6 months or something in 2011 until they could agree on a longer contract. Could happen. Somehow Camila's contract was up at the 3.5 year mark instead of 4 years. Unless she negotiated a 6-month early release. They always keep the contract stuff so mysterious, but November would be another possible point since it's 6 months after May.

Oooo I like the way you think!

#1 and #2 are the strongest possibilities. This announcement definitely seems tied to the renewal negotiations. I'd guess NBC/Universal might want to build a daytime talk show around Alison. Salary negotiations could also be the culprit.

In any case, the "biggest winner" in all of this may just end up being Jen Lilley.

I think this is a break for her. Apparently the only way she can get one. This show will get a 50th and mark my words Sami Brady will be a part of it. I don't believe any other alternative.

It would be interesting to see EJ on the show without Sami. Sure he's had stories with others before but he has never really been free of Sami.

Quoting limited to 4 levels deep

Just checked the DR archives. His contracts are still ending in May. It's just that the news was announced in October 2011.

Here's the DR post from October 2011:

"No sooner did Digest hear that James Scott (EJ) would be written out of Salem after he was unable to come to terms on a new deal with the show came word that negotiations had begun again. Now, it's all set and the actor has agreed to a new, one-year deal to stay in Salem until April 2013."

His contract was up in May 2012, so the head writers usually need to know many months in advance if an actor is staying or has to be written out (since they write their main story arcs much earlier than the dialogue scripts are written). So they were getting ready to write him out in May 2012, but then he upped for another year, and obviously has upped for another year (or two) since his May 2013 contract ended.

She didn't negotiate an early release. She has said in interviews that her contract was up last summer and she negotiated a 6 month extension.

Only if the happy ending is one killing the other and the police killing the survivor.

I can actually see that happening from NBC's perspective. We know that they think Ali carries the show, more or less. We've all heard about how they make exceptions for her, whether those claims are true or not.

I'm also kind of worried about where the storylines go now. I'm so glad that the show won't revolve around Sami, but I'm also sort of worried that those in charge won't find the show worth carrying without her. Most of the stories for the better part of the past 10 years have revolved around her. Where do they go from here? Do they even know how to write stories that don't go back to her? They don't know how to distribute stories as it is, so this is my only concern.

Woah. I am stunned. And surprisingly conflicted about this. I figured AS would stick it out to the bitter end; never in my wildest dreams did I think she would ever leave the show. I mean, they've made Sami Brady such a central figure to the show.

I wonder how they will transition her? I would love a "Who Killed Sami" s/l, as PP have mentioned, but a small part of me is sad that Salem will be without Sami Brady. I grew up watching her antics and have some fond Sami memories, even though I haven't been a Sami fan in a long time.

If anything, I think #3 is likely -- Sony being forced to cut budget as contingent to NBC renewal. But if TPTB had asked Ali to take a salary cut, it would make sense for her to just say "it's time for me to go out while I'm on top" instead. That way AS leaves on her own terms. With this much notice, it doesn't sound like she's leaving on bad terms. They are making it a win-win for both parties.

Also, Alison is nearing her 40s. She already stated she colored her hair because she needed a change. Being in ANY job for 21 years--let alone since being a teenager--is a miracle these days. I can believe she's at the stage of her life where she just wants a break. She's finally got to be famous enough from primetime tv, books, magazine covers that she's no longer seen as "Sami Brady'. To most of the country now, she's the woman on The Biggest Loser.

Whatever my personal feelings about her aside, I admire the fact that she's taking time for her family & herself.

Unfortunately, I see the handwriting on the wall. I am thrilled Sami will no longer be on the screen but TPTB think AS is the bees knees, so something must be happening at NBC.

I just hope and pray the idiotic writers bring back Bo, Steve and Shane for the ending of the show. So many of us longtime viewers remember when Days used to be great and not having those three around wouldn't be the same if the show went off the air.
