I'm no Sami/AS fan but this reeks of doom for Days, IMO.
I definitely don't think it is a good sign. No renewal information and now their biggest star is leaving. I hope we get more information soon.
NBC really needs to announce whether or not they are renewing Days. While AS leaving the show doesn't mean the show won't survive but. maybe she is privy to info about Days future. What I want to know is why is she announcing this on Ellen ? I agree, they need to announce the renewal soon.
AS is a regular guest on ELLEN. They're friends. ELLEN's audience fits right in with AS core fan base. It makes sense. She's talked about her life and family on Ellen several times in the past, so it seems like a natural place. She didn't have to do a press release that went through the Sony or NBC political crap.

I can see Days getting it's 50th Anniversary show as a fond farewell and being replaced by the Ali Sweeney show. Many people, tho not so much on this board, relate to her thru Days or TBL and I can see NBC thinking it will smooth over the bad feelings that will come with the show's cancellation.
that wont smooth things over
Not to be misunderstood, I don't think Days needs AS to be a successful show. I just think their time is running out...they've been last in demos, last in share, the overall numbers are up, but other soaps are up more, NBC is moving out of the building, the renewal announcement hasn't come yet... i agree with some of wat u said.

So assuming there are no underlying reasons for Ali leaving this free up some money to bring back other people.Of course I want to see Bryan offered a contract but I'd love to see Carrie and Belle back. I truly hope that we see headlines about some past characters returning in the coming weeks.

I don't think the Ellen announcement is strange. They had Deidre announce her return, and the entire 'reset', on some obscure TV Guide Network show. Ali has a relationship with the Ellen Show. It may have even been her request.

This is a huge blow for Days of Our Lives. Like Sami or not, she's the most recognizable character/actor the show has. Wow, just wow...They better get Christie Clark back ASAP to fill the void.

In the 2000s, who was the obvious lead of the show? It wasn't Alison.

I do want to see Sami go out with a bang. It would be a great murder mystery and not to mention, I don't want us to lose Johnny or Allie or Sydney.
If Alison Sweeney wants Sami to leave Breaking Bad style, you better bet they'll make it happen. Even Renee Jones got to dictate how Lexie left the show... certainly they would let Ali choose Sami's departure...

This is a huge blow for Days of Our Lives. Like Sami or not, she's the most recognizable character/actor the show has. Wow, just wow...They better get Christie Clark back ASAP to fill the void. I'd even give you that she's the current star, but I think Deidre (and then Kristian) are the most recognizable faces of Days by far. I don't see Christie in that group at all. There are so many blog posts and the like where people say they've turned on Days after years away "and Marlena's still up to something." Did you watch that Top Chef thing where the people who knew Days knew Marlena? I agree with those saying that Days will have to learn how to structure stories around characters other than Sami, but I think the show as a whole still has many 'spokeswomen' to choose from other than her.

I don't think so. When Ali was on maternity leave last time, DAYS was just fine without her.

I will miss Sami, but Sweeney's salary alone could probably bring back 2-3 other characters. I would imagine she's the highest paid actress on the show.
I see this thread is bringing out the big guns.I have never seen a founder post on this site in the years I have lurked then posted.I look forward to interesting week or so in this thread. :run: I rarely comment or discuss the show anymore due to time issues. Also, watching the show spoiler free makes it so much better. Further proof that adages do have a real life basis. You do learn something new every day:There is a founder group which includes a person who will miss Sami.Who knew. Nice to meet you.:)

stop thinking so negatively. I for one would love to have carrie bak. the leading lady spot should have been given to her instead. Agreed. But CC did make the choice to leave Days the first time on her own. Ali has stuck with the show for 21 years, that's huge. Hey I'm not even a huge Sami fan anymore. She used to be my favorite character, but now that's Nicole...I do think the show will survive, as they survived without Steve, Kayla, Marlena, John, Bo, Hope, Jack, and Jennifer at times..But still a huge blow.
