ERIC LAWSON BECOMES SECOND "DAYS" ACTOR WHO PLAYED MARLBORO MAN TO DIE FROM SMOKING-RELATED ILLNESS

On Friday, Jan. 10, Eric Lawson became the third Marlboro man from the popular cigarette ads to die from a smoking-related illness. Lawson passed away of respiratory failure due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); he was 72. Fellow Marlboro men David Millar and David McLean died of emphysema and lung cancer in 1987 and 1995, respectively.

Lawson recurred on "Days" in 1978 for 7 episodes as Police Sergeant Ferraro. Original cast member David McLean (who played Craig Merritt from 1965-1967), also played the Marlboro Man and died of lung cancer in 1995.

According to Lawson's wife, Susan, he began smoking at 14, but quit the habit once he was diagnosed with COPD. “He knew the cigarettes had a hold on him,” she told AP. “He knew, yet he still couldn’t stop.”

In addition to his Marlboro ads, which ran from 1978-1981, the actor also did anti-smoking commercials and filmed a segment with Entertainment Tonight discussing the dangerous side effects of smoking.

Though cigarette ads made him famous, Lawson also had acting roles on popular TV shows like Charlie’s Angels, Dynasty, and Baywatch. His acting career was cut short due to injuries he sustained on the set of a Western film in 1997.

Born in Glendale, California on December 28, 1941, Lawson was an avid professional photographer and enjoyed camping and metal detecting.

Lawson is survived by his wife, Susan; his children Scott Lawson, Sheri Mendon, Don Lawson, Erica Walian, Chanda Brown and Corey Lawson; eighteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

I had the good fortune to meet and spend time with the Winston man. He also had the same problems and I believe he has also passed away.
