I don't mind losing the pre-defined good/bad roles, but for me it has become too much about making the psychos look like sympathetic woobies and "good" characters look like harpies, shrews, and hypocrites, and I really couldn't give a shit about any of that.

I also hate the implication that this is something that is new to DAYS, because that is so out of touch with the history of the show.
I would add that because there is pain, it doesn't mean they aren't the bad guy.
Agreed. I also agree with what he said about Will and Sonny. But I'm not seeing complexity in any character, and I haven't in a long time. And that includes both Nick and Kristen. Any complexity is being communicated by the actors through interviews. It's not in the stories at all, IMO.
I don't particularly agree or disagree. I think, there are no more really very complex and well developed characters on soaps. Idk why, maybe because all these remaining daytime shows feel the pressure to have plot-driven (not character-driven) stories because they think that that's what their target (young) audience will watch, so they don't have longer scenes anymore, characters are barely talking to each other (they are either in bed, or plotting, or having cat fights).

Having said that, Nick and Kristen are the characters I enjoy(ed) most on "Days" during 2012-2014. Their stories were far from perfect but still they felt much more real to me (I mean, the psychological aspect) than any of the other stories or characters. Both actors did an excellent job portraying the characters. It was somehow possible to see/feel the vulnerable side (and the need for professional help etc) of those "dark" characters. And I really appreciate what I can get ;) .
Agreeeeeed. :D

Well put :P

Berris had the ability and the acting chops to infuse Nick with so many nuances, and he delivered in scenes again, and again, and again. We pitied Nick, despised Nick, and felt sorry for Nick all rolled into one, and to make an audience feel that is no easy task, my friends.

"Amen".

I found Kristen pretty cartoonish. Nick too but they smashed all his complexity into one day.

I very much agree with these statements.
Especially the idea: Just because there is pain, doesn't mean they aren't the bad guy.
or BeingInPain doesn't automatically negate BadGuy-ness.

I had to write a comment of my own, because the thumbs up option said 'you like this' and that is not really true, I love this. Being troubled and in pain may put reasons to a character's actions, but it should not make right or excuse their wrongdoing. It should not make the people that they wrong or the people that dislike them and their actions 'bad guys' because they refuse to take their pain as an excuse for their actions.

I hate to be this thread's contrarian...but I didn't see any nuances in BB's acting after he came back from the drowning. For months, all he did was walk around HTS and do stuff with his mouth. But he mostly looked smarmy. And that got tiring very fast. He mostly annoyed or bored me. There were few times that the character either angered me or I felt sorry for him. His last scenes with Gabi, Abby, Sami and Julie were the only Nick scenes I've enjoyed or showed any nuanced acting. IMHO, BB's 2012/2013 acting was much better. There was subtlety and charm to his acting. He was despicable but he was also warm, showed fear and was really heart breaking after the rape reveal. This time around he was a full on cartoon villain, except the last day.

Yes, I thought there was a humanity is his first run. When he came back IDK if was the acting, writing, both or what but it was just how you posted about.
