I was born January of '79 and this was in 1993 so I was 14 and had been watching Days faithfully for about 3 years. As a kid I was a horror junkie so having that kind of craziness on the only soap I watched was just COOL to me! However, I can understand how other viewers who supported the show during the 80s could've been like WTF is this!?!?! Needless to say, as we all know, it was only the beginning! But then again, Days had some crazy moments before ...Hope's "death" in a vat of acid was pretty extreme! ;)
Even the 80s had some off-the-wall moments too. But as you said, things got more extreme as time went on in the 90s. I probably would have liked it more if I had been younger because I loved Dark Shadows when I was a kid, lol.

I really, really, REALLY liked Crystal Chappell's Carly the first time around (either with PR's Bo or RKK's Bo. I thought she work rather well with either actor). I kinda hated how she and Lawrence were just written out, however. If I remember correctly, she still had partial amnesia & left town with Lawrence thinking he was the love of her life or something. And I don't believe that Lawrence's part in Steve's "death" has EVER been followed through on satisfactorily. Meanwhile, after Hope returned and Billie had long run her course as an obstacle (and I do mean LOOOOOONG), I really wanted Carly to come back because she was the one serious love interest of Bo's who Hope had never had to compete with. And then it happened. I they wrote Carly SO horrible that it was like a giant monkey's paw. Carly's last stint was fucking wretched. THAT said, I actually liked the promise of Carly & Daniel together. I thought SC & CC had really good chemistry.

Man you aren't just whistling Dixie about the looooooong Bo/Billie situation. I only really loved Bo/Billie when it was Lisa Rinna's initial stint. I also was disappointed with the end of Carly 1.0...seemed rushed and there was a great deal missing from it but I was upset anyway because I hated losing the character. The exit was strange but it was what it was. Carly 2.0...well, yea we've talked it to death but it obviously wasn't up to par and it's a damn shame. I wonder what would've been had CC agreed to return when TomSell returned after MarDar. As for Carniel (my Carly/Daniel name lol), dare I say I agree...that could've worked! May have been the only way I'd tolerate his character. Carly is a strong presence and not all ooey gooey so it had potential, unlike Dannifer, to be a mature and balanced relationship. Oh well. If those behind the scenes, Crystal included, could chill, Id be here for a return...even just an arc to see how she is after the ridiculousness that was her last stint.

With JER at the helm, three weeks could have been only 1 day in Salem time. This storyline was at the beginning of my daily Days addiction, so I don't remember how long it really lasted. I had just finished high school and actually planned my afternoon classes in college around Days, or would tape it on my vcr.

JER definitely had the most Gothic and intriguing storylines! I loved how by the end of his mysteries, almost every character was somehow involved and all of Salem present for the big reveal. He was the master of Cliffhanger Fridays, but that also left us with three days of of filler in the middle of the week. This was my biggest criticism of Reilly's work, it stretched on for days and days! And if you thought the recent stuff with Nicole and Eric took forever to get to the big reveal and characters would talk in circles for days, that's what JER's work did too. I also remember times where a conversation would last all day long, start in the morning over coffee, then it would abruptly change from day to night in the middle of the conversation and then nighttime would last for at least 10 episodes. That being said, his mysteries had a nice slow build and there was always a payoff at the end (except for Melaswen).

Does anyone remember that during Bo and Billie's stint, Carly was never mentioned at all? Billie's entire character was based on her fear that Bo could never love her as much as he loved his one and only true love, Hope. Never once was Carly brought up as part of Bo's past until she came back a few years ago. The only time she was referenced was when grown up Nicholas on, and whenever they needed to remind Vivian of her past dirty deeds.

I couldn't stand Carly from beginning to end. She just seemed to show up one day and eat the show. I'd never heard of her or seen this actress before and it seemed like everything revolved around her until she finally left in '93. Good riddance.

I don't remember much about Carly's first run other than what I've gone back and watched. But CC at that time was a certain kind of actress that I don't quite know how to describe. But those actresses were pretty popular back then. I think Staci Greason was similar, too. It was a style that I still find incredibly dull. I actually liked CC better as an actress when she returned, but my goodness her story was dreadful. When CC was fired I was mostly apathetic because it came with the news of big changes, but by the time she actually went offscreen, I was thrilled. She was TERRIBLE in that drug story that somehow managed to get her an Emmy nomination.

somehow = people she casts for her webseries voted for her as a way of saying "Thanks for keeping me employed!"

I wonder what would've been had CC agreed to return when TomSell returned after MarDar.
We probably would've ended up with some sort of contrived situation that would result in Bo ending up with Carly again and trying to turn Hope into the villain in the situation, not much unlike when Higley was technically penning things.

(I've said it before - the fact that Hope's been written so well since Bo's exit surprises me, given that Tomlin isn't really much of a fan of Kristian's.)

I am also one of the people who really liked "Carniel" and I thought they had eons better chemistry than Dannifer, then again, who doesn't though, lol. But any case, it also took Carly away from the Bope situation which had hurt her during her coming back as Carly 2.0, and it also meant she finally had something new and real outside of both Bo and Lawrence (who I hated btw, lol). I thought they had a good premise and really even liked *Melanie* as their daughter, lol. There was just something organic in them as a family imo, and chemistry-wise aswell. I also have to say I kinda liked Chappell's style at that point better with her hair lighter........

If they really had to have Daniel as a leading man, I would have much rather taken Carly as his leading woman instead of Jen Jen............

Yes! I remember rolling my eyes every single time Bo said that Hope was the only woman he'd ever loved. Carly and Bo were amongst my earliest memories so it was always annoying that no one ever remembered her. I was excited to see her again and for her to spook Hope a little but they wrote both women atrociously. I know that fans tend to side with one or the other but both women were such horse beasts. Hope was mad at Bo for being with Carly while she was DEAD and she was mad at Carly for being with her husband and helping with Shawn-D while she was DEAD. And they made Carly so smug. Such a wasted opportunity. There was no winner in that storyline.

we're 1.5 years past Bo's exit and Hope's still being written in character (& has probably been the most consistently written character over the last year or so (if not longer)). and if Hope & Aiden's story is a slow burning one, then i can't see her going too far OOC any time soon (the only real variable being how they write an actual concrete conclusion to Hope's marriage to Bo - whether it be via death or via divorce).

Gotta love Twilight Zone...my kids & I watched a number of episodes during a marathon over the holidays. The were amazed at how creepy they were since most of them were in black & white. One of my faves was when a young, beautiful Robert Redford played death.
I just saw that Redford episode of Twilight Zone on late night ME TV. I do think the early Twilight Zone episodes hold up really well. The later Serling show Night Gallery, not so much, IMO.

She'll be fine until they give her a real story. Right now, she's basically ericole in the rectory.

What translated onscreen between darly was a reflection of their real life friendship. Shawn has been on. Crystal's web soap for several years and tweet eachother from time to time.

Yep. They'll wreck it eventually. Especially when they decide it's time to give them a story with Dannifer. Then they're really in trouble.
