I think it had to be a timing fluke. Meanwhile, the rating for the 18-49 demo tied a low, but the demo's total is still higher than the lowest that they hit last year. That's not particularly important, but I think it's interesting. |

What is concerning is that Days usually hit their lowest numbers in the spring or summer. So I'm wondering how low they will get in the next few months. |

My biggest confusion about this whole thing is that looking at the numbers, they should have dumped TomSell in the summer. The show has been dropping, but it was dropping 8 months ago too, and that's actually when they should have made a change. It's just weird that they waited until now. |

Right after Sami and Kristen left would have been the perfect moment to switch the writers but I guess TomSell convinced Corday with their "brillant" ideas: bring Melanie back and pair her with Brady, make Will cheat on Sonny, make Eve and JJ sleep together for months, add a mystery about Aiden's wife, introduce Serena and her elephant statue, make Nicole beg for forgivness in all of her scenes... The only storyline that didn't tank is the one with Will/Sonny/Paul but I think a lot of the credit goes to the casting of CS, more than the writing. Anyway, Corday should have recognize those stories were bad and TomSell needed to be replaced sooner. Now we're stuck with them for half a year. |

I think you are right. They wanted to give them a chance with their plans for after EJami/Kristen's existed. They gave them 4 months to see how it played out. It obviously didn't play out well. So they are making the change. I also agree that the Will/Sonny/Paul success is do to Christopher and that people have wanted a shake up in the WilSon s/l, because it had gotten so boring. On paper, the actors they have in place are good, but even they can't pull off the stories. The problem is, with them waiting and the 5 month lag, there is no telling how much damage will be done by the time the new writers material is seen on the screen. |

Maybe after the next 5 months we'll know exactly why this change happened. |

Hasn't DOOL had ratings lower than this and still been renewed? Unless they continue to drop I wouldn't worry about it. Their budget is so low as it is. |

I agree that the Sonny/Paul/Will storyline is the only one working at the moment, but I feel it is going to crash and burn real quick. The only reason that storyline is working is because of Christopher Sean and Freddie Smith. Guy Wilson has been pretty atrocious in his scenes. I'm hoping they take the character of Will in a more "villainous" direction. Maybe he could pull that off more. Overall, this show is creatively uninspired, they need a shot in the arm. I just don't think that should be in the form of Dena Higley AT ALL. I'm expecting even worse material come July and August. I hope I can be proven wrong. While this may be true, it also doesn't make sense. The stories WITH those characters were failing too. I don't think days is in any more danger of cancellation now than any other time though. The show is still profitable. They may be creative idiots, but they're not going to let themselves lose money. Ratings have to get pretty low to lose money, and I don't think they've ever let them reach that level. They know where that point is, and they make changes long before hitting it. I do wonder if waiting so long will come back to bite them but I kind of doubt it. The 50th should bring in viewers and that will happen as they're negotiating the renewal. |

I give the execs a little more credit. They aren't going to let a blip from the 50th sway their decision. We don't usually hear until Jan/Feb. It will be interesting to see what the ratings look like over the next 5 months. I wouldn't be surprised if some might check out and come back when the new writers material starts. |

I am sorry but these numbers are deserved...the show is in shambles....the writing change came way to late and the show ins likely never going to recover. |

I agree with Lysie that the show is no more in danger now than it has ever been since 2009 when they slashed the budget. The show is still profitable even with the current numbers. And, as has been mentioned, the show was actually doing worse last summer over a longer period of time. I expect the show to go up next week and even with the inevitable spring and summer horrible numbers, the show will be fine because the 50th will see some increase. The true test for the show will be after the 50th. The challenge will be there. The show needs to have story that will keep viewers after the 50th. They would be wise to start a few new stories in the midst of the 50th to keep viewers after the fact. September-February is when to hook viewers and the 50th falls right in the midst of that. They need to be smart and I think they will be. They were NOT smart this Fall but I blame that more on the network than anything else. I think without the level of interference that saw story after story gutted in 2014, the show would've likely been in better shape after AS, JS, and ED left. That was the key. If the show was moving story like it was now back in November, it may have seen a much better few months. It likely wouldn't have seen results like 2013 but it would've been better. Days is always the soap that withstands the odds. Time and time again it gets written off only to come up big in the 11th hour. I won't believe they are done until we see the final episode air. They are just that good at overcoming the odds. Besides, NBC is still in a mess. They were seeing progress in primetime but now their two biggest hits (The Blacklist and The Voice) are seeing ratings erosion and they are an even bigger mess outside those shows. It also doesn't appear they have any new daytime projects in the pipeline for anytime soon and they do not want to give another hour of programming back to the affiliates. They also are clearly more involved with Days creatively than they have ever been IMO so given all this, I would be shocked if Days was cancelled anytime soon (meaning over the next 2 years). I think it is here at least into 2017. |

LOL Days is just a pathetic show at this point, and in a way I want them to get cancelled because I would love to see some of those actors on Y&R like Arianne Zucker, who I adore from when I was watching the show. |

Speaking of ratings. Is there anybody on DR who belongs to the "Nielsen homes" (sample)? Edited by thepadange, Feb 24 2015, 07:18 AM.

I don't think the show is in grave danger either, given their budget. I think they'd have to sink below 2M viewers for that to happen. But make no mistake, the ratings now are very bad. You really can't compare them to summer ratings, say that they are about the same, and then assume that the show is in no less trouble now then they were over the summer. The context of the season matters. It's winter, and it's been a brutal one at that for the northeast in terms of snow and temperature. The fact that Days can only muster 2.3 million viewers at this time of year is very troubling. People are inside and clicking through the channels. But they're clicking right past Days. They're not stopping on the channel because in those 10 seconds that they land on the show, they're not seeing anything that interests them, for whatever reason. In a season like this, their absolute lowest rating should be 2.5 million viewers, and that would be on a bad day. Right now, and for most of the winter, they can't seem to crack 2.5M on most episodes. This is why the writing change happened. They are seeing these numbers, and they had to react. |

The summer has a sweeps months too, and the ratings have been more up and down the last few weeks. They look worse compared to last year, though. I was hoping that them looking worse would be enough. Maybe it was. They still should have done something in the summer. I don't think anyone is claiming the ratings are good, lol. They're obviously not. They tied a low. |
