Thanks Nananana. I've been wondering about that because I've heard people talk in the past about making sure you don't ff'd through on the DVR and so I was confused about if they counted or not, but now that makes sense. I've been wondering, but never able to find any information online to my answer. |

I don't think it counts for the ratings, but of course they can track the traffic to NBC.com and the shows streaming from there. The number of ads served is going to be important to somebody at NBC. Edited by granolagirl, Dec 16 2015, 04:34 PM.

I've been on the message boards a long time (lurking since 2003, posting since 2005) and it took me a LONG time to understand the perspectives of some fans. I used to have a hard time grasping the idea that any fan could only watch a show for one character or couple or quit watching any show they profess to care about. I used to wonder alot of the same things the original poster is wondering about. However, over time, you start to realize and understand so much about fan perspectives and, also, with each passing year, you grasp the idea that life gets more and more hectic and people have less time so some simply don't feel like wasting time on a show they may care about but they feel is just not appealing TO THEM. I've been watching Days for well over 2 decades and have seen characters I love come and go either voluntarily or by the show's decision. I'm used to it. There have been times I've seen the show make moves I thought were horrible mistakes only to be proven wrong. There have been times the show did something I thought was right only to be proven wrong. None of us can really say what is truly right for the show but we can say what is truly right for each of us. We all are different in what we like and don't like. There is no pleasing everyone. What one fan thinks is the answer another may think is a problem. That is why nothing can really be said in absolutes because time and time again all of us have been proven right at times and proven wrong at times. At the end of the day, the show makes the decision they feel is right and it either works or it doesn't. The cool thing is they can always undo things. It's a soap. Not everyone is like me and some others where they have interests in the majority of the show and it's couples and that is fine because some may have been drawn to the show by a actor or actress or by a particular couple. Personally, I was drawn in by my grandmother and mother and the storytelling. I've been like that since day one. A fan of the show. Most people I know off the boards are the same way because most of them grew up on the show and it was passed down on them by family and I think any time that happens you tend to end up with a fan that is more of a fan of the entire show and not just a couple or certain characters. Some aren't but my feeling is most are. I think the internet and message boards has aired greatly in cultivating fanbases and makes it seem like one couple or character may have more of an impact on ratings or a show than they may actually have. The show just needs to be well-written and/or entertaining to me and I am cool. I've only come close to quitting watching twice in all my years of watching. 2005 during the Iraq storyline and spring of 2015 and, while I didn't quit either time, I was pretty much down on the entire show and only watching out of habit. Thankfully, it got better. The show is not perfect under Griffley but it is SOOOO much better than the final year and a half under Tomsell. I was a fan of Tomsell too. Loved them from 2009-2011 and loved 2013-mid 2014. They just lost it and were horrible at the end there. A change was needed. Griffley have been great and while not perfect and very jarring with some of the changes they made, they have done wonders for the show along with Alarr in production. Daytime needs to change and evolve to survive, just like primetime has and does, and Griffley and Alarr are at least acting in accordance with that. Edited by PhoenixRising05, Dec 16 2015, 04:36 PM.

I haven't watched since Bo's funeral. I didn't stop watching to try and make a statement, I just... stopped. It happened very naturally, I kept putting off watching that week's episodes and the next, and then one day I just realized that I didn't feel like catching up. I don't want the show to be cancelled. I check in here from time to time to see if any actors are leaving or coming back. I don't think there's anything wrong with being active on DR even if you're not currently watching the show. |

Losing Bo broke my heart. I still watch and want to see who was behind Bo's torture and kidnapping. Would love to see some anger from Bo's siblings, but will take Hope's need to find answers. Would love to see Hope grieving with Ciara once they get answers. But I am not counting on any of it. This team, while doing a wonderful jobs with some episodes for Bo, Bo and Hope, really seems weak with "aftermath" and repercussions and connections. The show still has a jumpy feel to me. I watch via DVR but FF certain characters. I have no interest in Rafe with or without Hope. That simple. No interest in Brady or Theresa. I think I would have liked Eric and will watch what happens for his exit. I like Kay and Steve and so far Chad and Abby. The teens are OK. I loved Ciara's scenes with Bo the most. Not so much with Chase. He has no appeal to me. He's a cute kid and all but that's not the kind of guy Bo's daughter would find appealing. I think Chase to needs to go live with his aunt. The Dimeras are just OK to me....I still enjoy Marlena, John and I like Belle. But overall the quality of the storylines, the ability to connect characters disappoints me. No way Bo should have not even had a scene with John and Marlena. Sigh. I hope the show can stay on the air. But I will not be surprised if ALL the remaining shows are gone in a few years. Corporate media cares little for anything that is not considered "premium for pay". It's their whole scheme.....they have destroyed basic entertainment by making the free airwaves nothing but talk shows and cheap reality cr*p. Only people who can afford it now can get good continuing drama. Good entertainment is for those with money. :soapbox: :soapbox: |

I don't think any of that would stop them from counting traffic to their website and knowing how many times the show was watched. They're probably less interested, though, if you aren't being served ads. I thought I would stop watching in 2009 after SN and MBE left, but I kept it up (here and there) through Stephanie's stories, Alice's funeral, MBE's returns, Nighttime Hope, etc., until Higley's tenure lost all steam in 2011... Tuned in again, sort of, for MarDar, and finally really tuned out when it became the Kristen show, except for scenes here and there, until Griffley. If I wasn't keeping up with Days on the web when I wasn't really watching the show, I wouldn't have known to start again. |

Ditto. I got my first VCR in 1985 and have missed perhaps 1-3 episodes a year since then, due to tape malfunction or local preemption. I watched 1975-1985 only on days off from school and summer breaks. There have been tedious times all along, but there's never been a reason to STOP watching. As someone confirmed earlier, ratings are driven only by TIVO boxes and voluntary participation/inclusion in the Nielsen sampling. Whether a few hundred folks participating on a message board watch is immaterial, to any program, daytime/nighttime/primetime. One thing that has become more and more obvious to me is that this board appears to include many, many individuals who are (or think they are) members of "the soap industry". Whether bloggers or erstwhile production assistants or one-time scripting staff or fanfiction fanatics or magazine article authors, these posters often seem to have both the best inside info and the most vociferous (borderline obstinate) commentary. They swear off the show, vow to never watch again, claim to haven't been watching, call existing staff writers "hacks" (Q: WTF does that mean? A: Usually someone who beat them out for a job and actually makes money). I am just a fan of the show. The show and I both turned 50 this year. I don't dwell on how wonderful the show "used to be", because, frankly, there have always been peaks and valleys. No one wants to recall the OMG or WTF or eyerolling parts that involve nearly every storyline. A couple years ago, I found a VHS tape that had a full DOOL episode from the early 90s. There was no major storyline going on and the show was just "bleh". I also found a full unedited episode from The Possession Years. It too was more dreck than awesome. I'll continue to watch until cancellation happens --- and I think the show has 10 years or more left, mostly because NBC and Sony make enough money to keep it on the air. Will it change? Sure it will. |

I don't know if tuning out "the Kristen" show means you dislike the character but I really disliked that character, and glad I was not watching her second time around. Hated the whole five faces farce back in the day. But glad to know another person who did not care for the character or for her taking over the show either time. |

I enjoyed Kristen's story the first time around. The final twist is one of my favorite things that happened on Days in the 90's. But the second time, there was too much focus on that one story, and not enough other interesting things happening on the show. Plus the other characters in the story weren't getting enough POV, and they were playing up her being a vixen, which I don't really remember from the 90's. It just wasn't my cup of tea... and Eric's rape happened, it seemed like the right call. |

And that's been Days (and US Daytime's) problem all along, their refusal to evolve. It's still 1980/1990 in daytime land, to where they're now just bad telenovellas. Weekday serialized storytelling around the world has proven you don't need science fiction, super villains, and end of the world plots. Just three dimensional characters in a setting living interesting lives. (like the 70s used to do) |

I started watching DAYS in March of 1984. The few times I've missed in the first five years or so was because of power outages. I hated coming home to a flashing VCR which indicated my timer recording was interrupted. I was forced to build a safety net by having family members record and provide their tapes if mother nature messed with father time. I watch every episode without the FF button because I'm entertained most of the time. Plus, if things aren't that exciting I simply mull over what should be done and/or could develop in the storylines. There always seems to be at least one diamond in the rough pertaining to all the episodes. Fast forwarding could make it harder to see that one character and/or storyline that makes the investment worthwhile. I'm entertained and loyal. Just look at my username. |

I hope the show stays on air but i'm not gonna sit through something that I don't find entertaining. Time is the most precious commodity there is I ain't gonna set around and wish it away pining for my favorites to return. I don't blame any actor/actress that would tell the big chief's that fired them hey why don't you blow it out your ass. I'm not gonna get pissed and say oh you should come back your letting your fans down. No the dumb asses that fired them let the fans down. |

I THINK it's been suggested that if you don't watch you don't have a right to an opinion. I tend to think if you read the PBP you have at least a faint idea of what is happening onscreen and therefore can give your opinion. So that is why even if I don't watch I still post. I don't post much in the daily thread, but if something hits me I do. |

I am going to disagree with your timeline....but just a little bit. I do not think the early 80s were, for DAYS anyway, overtaken by gimmicky/scifi cr*p. Yes there were a few gimmicks used but they were basically background to people driven stories. And what worked in the first half of the 80s, for me, anyway, was the slow build of relationships. Writers allowed the viewers to get to know new character in many ways, other than just their romantic relationships. I will use Bo as an example. We got to know Bo, through his relationship with his big brother Roman first; then with some flirtations with Hope and the back story of them having know each other as children but had not see each other since she left for boarding school and she for the merchant marines. We got to know Bo through with his need to prove himself to Shawn Brady, see his level of hurt thinking Shawn preferred Roman over him which of course then tied into the Caroline/Victor story. We saw Bo's relationship with Kayla, their closeness, her protectiveness. Ditto Kim. We saw his humor with Eugene. I could do the same for Hope but I think I made my point. Bo and Hope became popular not because of some gimmick (whether it crazy Andre framing Roman); or the baca that Eugene needed to prevent Stefano from causing an explosion, but because viewers got to know both Bo and Hope as individuals first who but then who displayed the romantic chemistry with each other, so strong it could not be denied. We knew Stefano was the villain, clear and simple, and while he hated Roman, we also saw how he lusted after, wanted Marlena to be his queen but he never acted on it. He did his evil, and disappeared. When we though he was gone and everyone was safe, slowly and eerily clues add up to the return. He was a villain, not Mr. Resident and Neighbor rich guy whose very victims and eye witnesses to his crimes were incapable of getting justice. In between crime/adventure stories we saw the friendship of Caroline and Alice. We saw Doug and Julies conflicts over Hope. Gimmicks were background.......characters and their relationships drove stories, characters between believable friends and families. Villain were brought and motives were explored (e.g Patch going after Bo). Background and aftermath were not ignored. I believe things started to change in the 90s.......maybe late, late 80s. Definitely when JER took over in the 90s, the GIMMICK was the star, the characters were mixed and matched with characteristics as if the audience did not care who was loyal, who had a sense of humor, who was always suspicious, who was always trusting, who committed heinous crimes. To me that started the downfall......suddenly "actor proof" writing was the rage because characters did not matter and couples/romance did not matter. Gimmick driven, shock the audience stories, bed hopping became the norm and the shows were trying to outdo each other with sensationalistism. Crazy plot drive stories ruled and IMO the sillier they got the more unwatchable the shows became and what kept me tuned in to stories I sometimes hated was loyalty to the actors/characters/families I loved and cared about. I know many will disagree but that is how I saw it. |

No, it was not suggested that if you don't watch you don't have a right to an opinion. You always have a right to an opinion. It was stated, by me, that if you tell me you're not watching and then tell me just how bad what you're not watching is, I'm going to be casting some side eye your direction. Because yes, you can get the gist from reading but you can't get the full context. So, I'm not suggesting that you (or anybody else) can't or shouldn't post your opinions about what you're not watching. I'm just saying that I, personally - not speaking for anyone else, don't tend to take those opinions too seriously. Not that you (or anyone else) does or should care what I think. |

Very true, although you can still do the over the top kind of stuff too. Just depends on how you do it. Soaps used to evolve with the times. Every decade would show a change in style/tone/storytelling. After the teen movement in the late 90's/early 2000's, soaps stopped evolving and it seemed out desperation for survival they resorted to stunts which hurt the histories and legacies of many soaps and then, when they realized the damage they had done, they tried to reclaim the magic of previous eras instead of starting a whole new golden era. As a result, they may have gotten some longtime fans back here and there but they never were able to grab new fans and tap into the mainstream audience anymore. That is why there is, essentially, a cap now on soap viewership. One of the big issues is the recycling of the same writers too. Alot of these trends started when the same writers started moving from soap to soap. Results have been mixed the few times soaps have promoted from within and/or given us someone fresh from maybe even outside of soaps but at least there was a fresh energy and an attempt at something new and different. I would love to see new writers get a chance or see someone with no soap experience at all bring something new to the table. Most of these writers seem completely burnt out and just rely on the same old because they are merely being told to hang on to the viewers they have and get back as many lapsed viewers as possible. Why not try for more? Why not try to bring in new fans with something different? I wasn't the biggest JER fan but what he did brought in new viewers. It doesn't have to be cheap stunts or something over the top. Just someone who brings something different, takes risks, and commits 100% to whatever it is they want to do. If it doesn't work, fine. At least you tried. The current regime at Days, I can say, is at least taking chances and has tried to do some different things production-wise, pacing-wise, and story-wise. They are getting younger with the cast too so there is alot of positive there. I would feel alot better if they got rid of Higley completely and gave Griffith a co-HW who is new and fresh but I would say Days and B&B are the only soaps at least trying to be more contemporary and modern in some ways. |

I think B&B being centered around a fashion industry helps it keep up with the times. Days for the most part can still feel very conservative in their storytelling which is why I find these characters so hard to relate at times because they write perspectives appropriate for 30+ years ago. I thought MarDar brought a fresh energy to the characters. They were awful at plots but their characters didn't have the old & jaded feel Tomsell and Higley's had. It was espcially evident among the 20-30 age group. They actually felt hip and modern. |

I'm generalizing and appreciate your take but I still maintain my general stance. The 80s are known as the era of Stefano DiMera, prisms, underground cities, world freezing mad men, sweeping adventure stories that went beyond the fantastic. Then you have the 90s which perfected the perpetual triangle hampster wheel. Those worked for their eras but it's not 1985 or 1996 anymore. They don't have the money to tell those stories, they don't work in the modern age, and they look horrendous in HD television. So what in the 80s would have been a great story becomes the 2010s Hope takes ZZZQuil. The audience is also too sophisticated to believe John/Marlena/Interloper round 2373. Many of the people that I know that have quit watching don't truly want the show cancelled, but sometimes tuning out & a,ratings drop are the only way to get TPTB's attention that viewers are not happy with some of the trash being written. They may not care if they get 10,000 angry tweets a day, but losing 300,000+ viewers in a week will probably get someone's attention, especially if it's a trend that continues. I get that the show tapes 5-6 months ahead, but I think many upset viewers would be patient & tune back in if they thought some of the ridiculous story direction were going to be turned around. This regime seems very much about what THEY want instead of what the fans want with a few exceptions. I don't think they give a damn how many tweets, emails, letters come their way, but a nose dive in the ratings will get someone's attention. If people don't tune out then they will continue to run their agenda of making Rope the new Salem supercouple, turning Rafe into Daniel Jonas 2.0, replacing the Brady's with the Hernandez clan as the core Salem family, throwing every popular fan base it can get it's hands on under the bus (Wilson, Haiden, Ericole), letting talented actors like DC, GV, & KDP go & bringing on a bunch of useless newbies. Even many of the things done during the 50th that fans tuned in for were just to launch their agendas into orbit (turning the Bope reunion into a launch pad for Rope). I think Stayla fans are just lucky that JG is a huge Kayla fan. Like I said, Griffley only seems concerned with running their agenda & really give less than a shit about the fans & even actor input. Unfortunately with this regime only numbers will inspire change. I saw this coming when GG & his wife were practically orgasmic when Dena the hack's return was announced, he new that Days of Rafe's Life was a go, be damned what viewers thought. Fortunately people are able to keep tabs on the show through social media, etc. so they can decide if they want to tune in. I don't think you have to watch the show itself in order to have thoughts, opinions that are relevant, & making a dent in the ratings is the only way to communicate with this crew.
