if Dena is really the one who wrote January (as a lot of posters were/are speculating) we might get her back LOL because whether we like it or not the ratings are decent, they had the best week of the regime and other weeks aren't bad either.
I suspect there's more to her being let go than ratings and story. If past BTS stories are accurate, she is hell to work with. Sony may have just gotten sick of her antics.
Of course it wasn't ratings why she "took" LOA. They had no idea what the numbers will be. Griffith/Higley failed as a team and they decided to keep JG.

Speaking of soap ratings in general, IMO there's a tendency which could be described as the more "action" the better ratings. (It's become very obvious with Pratt's material on Y&R) That's why long-term viewers complain about OOC writing. Nobody cares anymore about deeper psychological characterizations, integrity of the characters etc. Soaps are now trying to attract "accidental" viewers with their plots and surprises and it's working (that's why Days' January worked). And it looks like it's the only way for soaps to stay on air. I doubt we'll get good ratings with more traditional style of soap writing these days.
You make some good points, and I see where you're coming from.

I would also argue, however, that the plot-driven, even-style writing is not sustainable. It may grab viewers for a while, but it's not enough to hook them long term. And I think that's the bigger problem. To hook viewers long term, you have to make them care about the characters, and if you're just jumping from plot to plot or event to event, there really is no time to develop characters.

Maybe. Surely they know these things aren't immediate though. Especially when you have big things like a car crash and a murder and a kidnapping happening. It didn't play out well but things were timed well to keep an audience.
That´s what I´m saying. From what I see Dena is following JER and tries to create conflict. It pisses the supercouple fans off but honestly I don´t think they are a large portion of the audience anymore. And for people like me who is not particulary invested in any of these couples what I´m seeing now is more interesting than what Josh wrote in fall when I thought the show is truly boring until Chabby and the SK storyline took over. I´m not saying I like Higley but atleast she is trying to write stories. Josh was more like a fanfiction writer, just doing things to make hardcore fans and actors happy.
That might be what you're saying, but it wasn't what I was saying at all. It's actually the exact opposite.

Quoting limited to 3 levels deep

I agree, that the shows need loyal fans (fans who watch no matter what are their ideal audience). I personally am not a fan of short-term plots and characters, I need to see their development, I need time to fall in love with characters and pairings.

But the reality is (and ratings show it) that the audience (especially, in the younger demos) is getting more selective and less and less loyal to shows, networks or even medium (TV) because of the availability of numerous alternatives. So every show needs every viewer they can get - be it religiously loyal fans or viewers who only watch if they're interested in particular plots (it would be nice if they ended up hooked long-term but it's not always realistic to expect it). They have to try to please both. I think the solution may be in the balance between the plot- and character-driven writing.

Well. Thursday sounds remotely watchable. I'm looking forward to Kayla finding out Steve was raped, and John & Marlena - FINALLY - are on-screen again, this time with lines & everything!!

Does ANYONE have a clue on when Higley's garbage is permanently over & done with??!! Please!!!
This may have already been answered, but I think Jason suggested that this next week maybe be it and then we should start seeing JG and BM's stuff.

I'm looking forward to Steve/Kayla scenes as well. Hoping for some emotional stuff.

I wonder has John told Brady/Belle, and I guess Paul now about their new grandma. LOL.

Theresa, Nicole, Abigail, Rafe, Ciara, and Ava have very telling, cinematic dreams about their various romantic predicaments, with a different genre of movie serving as the backdrop for each one.

Hopefully this will be a case of I see dead people.

Theresa: Kristen visits her to tell her to give up on Brady.
Nicole: Her vision of Daniel just turns into EJ taunting her that she's being overly melodramatic and its time to move on.
Abigail: Jack returning to tell her its just as important to follow her head as her heart.
Rafe: Bo to tell him that he's doing a lousy job of looking after Hope and he no longer needed.
Ciara: Aiden to remind Ciara she wasn't so great at picking guys for her mum and maybe she should lay off.
Ava: Dead baby telling her to give up and leave her/his Dad and the woman he loves alone and try and find happiness somewhere else.
