I guess I'm confused about whether there is truth to the report about them wanting to cut down the production timetable. I would certainly prefer that and it seems like it would be beneficial in terms of ending stories that aren't working. I guess it's just a matter of WHO wants to reduce their production schedule?

I do appreciate Michael an awful let for letting us know that we shouldn't worry. I'm not sure why anyone would intentionally want fans to worry. That doesn't seem very nice, but maybe that wasn't the intention.
I think everyone WANTS to. But anyone in that industry should know that it's not that simple. Even to cut back to a three month lag time, they'd have some major issues to work out with the crew...who they'd basically have to lay off and risk losing. The gaps don't affect NBC nearly as much as they affect Corday Productions.
But they need to do something. If they let things go on like that, they will keep getting further ahead every year. Are they going to tape Christmas in May this year? Instead of taking a big break, I think they should try to close the gap gradually.

What is really sad is that I'm so much more interested in this drama than what is airing.

But closing the gap probably doesn't help them financially. And if it doesn't make dollars...it doesn't make cents (sense).

That's how I interpreted it cause no one in their right mind would think that scene was "drama".

ETA: Sounds like he's mocking the whole heart-transplant storyline...if so, I'm glad he recognizes tripe when he sees it. If not...well... :glare: :drunk:

Quoting limited to 3 levels deepI find it very sad to worry people like this. How different is this post from the day before? And I think Jamey is great, a good guy, and would tell him the same thing myself. He has always been very nice to me. I do have a soft spot for DAYS of course, and that may be my issue.

I know I do blind items, but I find this to be much different when it comes to causing people to freak out about the show getting renewed or not.

I think news like that has some positive impact as well, it makes us appreciate more what we have - our show. ;)
That is a great way to look at things! :)
Ditto!! :) :D

No, but it helps them to gain & utilize audience reaction to what works & doesn't work and write more of what viewers want to see and less of what they don't which can greatly effect ratings. The taping schedule has bit them in the ass more than a few times.

I understand that, but if the schedule is the only way to make Days profitable with the cuts, they'll have to keep it at this point. I don't think the ad dollars would start pouring in unless Days started getting, like, Y&R numbers. Even if the writing drastically improves, I don't see Days getting those kinds of numbers again.

I'd love for production to be halted so that it allows the gap between filming and airing to decrease. However, like others have said, I'm not exactly sure how they're going to be able to pull this off with the crew.

What saves them money is not that they're 6 months ahead but that they tape more (during the weeks they tape) and have dark weeks. More dark weeks will save them money as well and they won't be getting more and more ahead. The problem/question is what will happen with their crew.

And the last thing this show needs is another transition period with new people replacing old people. Whether it be writing or production.

They could always just simply slow down the rate at which they tape - switch to 5 episodes per week as opposed to 8 or 9 (or whatever the crazy number they do per week is). That way, they'd naturally lessen the gap each time they have a dark week.

Days' biggest issue in terms of tape-to-air is the fact that Days not airing during the Olympics instantly puts them 2 weeks farther ahead, unless they take extra time off.

This would increase their costs. I'm not sure they can afford it.

I think this would be beneficial for many reasons. They'd also be able to improve the quality of what they're doing. Heck, do four a week and use Friday as a day to either reshoot or do pick-ups. But I think it would be viewed as very cost inefficient.

They can put the crew on hiatus with a plan for them to come back in three months, or have two-week dark periods. The crew would take a hit to their income, but most crew members in the entertainment industry work sporadically. Most crew members will do a TV series or motion picture for several weeks and then look for a new job. So that kind of downtime isn't unusual. The kind of steady, multi-year job like Days is the exception, not the rule and I suspect most of the crew would probably choose to stay with Days than take another job that may last a few months, but leave them with a lot of uncertainty when that ends.

This past year could have been a disaster. It took more than 6 months for TomSell's episodes to go off the air after they got fired and it seemed like viewers were giving up in the spring. They got lucky because Chabby was a hit in the summer, it probably helped them to stay afloat until the real fixes in the fall with Steve and Bo's returns and the serial killer story. If they go through another rough patch like this and they can't fix it soon enough, it will be bad. Affiliates could start dropping the show if they go below certain numbers.

It's the only possible way to shorten the gap between taping and airing IMO .

Right.

You know what is interesting? The past few months we've had chunks of story cut out of episodes. The amount of cut scenes has been ridiculous and it seems this was the show's way of making adjustments on the fly rather than letting it air and waiting to get to the better material. Given all that and now seeing this report, it almost would make me think this was some sort of compromise by Days to show NBC they could "fix" things to an extent without going back to the old model.

However, as you and others noted, I think this is all very overblown. The less I say about Jamey (I've already made my feelings known about him over the past year) the better. It's likely about the licensing fee and that's it. There is no way NBC would try to force the old model on Days when Days is more profitable under this model. It makes no sense. Now, do they seem more involved with the show creatively since 2009. Yes. However, NBC has been able to be involved with the current model and if it was that much of an issue for them they would've done something sooner. It's not like Days has had steady ratings over the years. They have been up and down had some really rough periods so NBC could've easily pushed for this sooner if it were an issue. The issue is always about money and keeping the show profitable. That is it.
