GH is in serious need of a cast cut. So many newbies the show has become unrecognizable. I sure hope it isn't Days.

I'm excited for this. He's only done very short interviews during the 50th Anniversary party, so it'll be great to see/listen to a more in depth interview and learn some more about him.

He's such a cutie :wub2:

I'm sure there will be cuts at Days but they already have made some cuts prior to the renewal (KDP, GV, SC, etc). I could see there being more but I always tend to lean more toward GH because they have yet to reach the kind of budget restrictions Days has and I keep thinking they will have to head in that direction if they don't get their numbers back in an upward direction soon because ABC isn't nearly as patient when it comes to ratings with GH as NBC is with Days.
When was the last time any soap but Days really had a real cast cut?
Wow...it's been so long I can't remember :blulaugh: .

Here's the thing...no one has had more regime changes, cast overhauls, direction changes than Days. No one. That is why the whole "Plan to Save Days" deal that happens almost yearly has become a punchline. Sure, soaps have changed head writers and producers here and there but nowhere near as much as Days. I almost feel like Days should just change writers/producers yearly since they always seem to have issues and it's gotta be one of the big reasons why so many writers do not want to work for Days.

You think back to 2000-2010 and every soap was going through a round of cast cuts every few years but that seemed to calm down in 2010 for everyone but Days. And, when you consider during that 2000-2010 period that most of the soaps only made 1-2 regime changes, it makes Days' pattern stick out even more.

Then again, Days changed writers quite frequently in the 80's/early 90's too. Every year or 2 it seemed they changed writers:

November 8 – December 31, 1965 Peggy Phillips and Kenneth Rosen
January 3 – July 4, 1966 Peggy Phillips
July 5, 1966 – May 6, 1975 William J. Bell
May 7, 1975 – April 19, 1977 Pat Falken Smith
April 20, 1977 – February 26, 1979 Ann Marcus
February 27, 1979 – March 14, 1980 Elizabeth Harrower
March 17 – April 18, 1980 Ruth Brooks Flippen
April 21 – October 9, 1980 Nina Laemmle
October 10 – 17, 1980 Michelle Poteet Lisanti
October 20, 1980 – October 20, 1981 Gary Tomlin and Michelle Poteet Lisanti
October 21, 1981 – April 16, 1982 Pat Falken Smith
April 19, 1982 – September 21, 1984 Margaret DePriest and Sheri Anderson
September 24 – October 25, 1984 Margaret DePriest, Sheri Anderson, and Thom Racina
October 26 – November 30, 1984 Sheri Anderson and Thom Racina
December 3, 1984 – November 10, 1986 Sheri Anderson, Thom Racina, Leah Laiman
November 11 – 18, 1986 Thom Racina and Leah Laiman
November 19, 1986 – March 16, 1989 Leah Laiman
March 17, 1989 – January 19, 1990 Anne Howard Bailey
January 22, 1990 – June 18, 1991 Richard J. Allen and Anne Schoettle
June 19, 1991 – January 30, 1992 Gene Palumbo
January 31 – June 12, 1992 Richard J. Allen and Beth Milstein
June 12 – July 9, 1992 Sheri Anderson
July 10 – August 6, 1992 Sheri Anderson and Gene Palumbo
August 7 – December 18, 1992 Sheri Anderson
December 21, 1992 – April 28, 1993 Sheri Anderson and James E. Reilly
April 29, 1993 – November 20, 1997 James E. Reilly

But if we look at what happened after JER left in 1997, this is what you have:

November 21, 1997 – January 5, 1998 James E. Reilly and Sally Sussman Morina
January 8, 1998 – October 14, 1999 Sally Sussman Morina
October 15 – November 10, 1999 Lorraine Broderick
November 11, 1999 – March 28, 2002 Tom Langan
March 29, 2002 – March 6, 2003 Peter Brash and Paula Cwikly
March 7 – August 8, 2003 Dena Higley
August 11 – 15, 2003 Dena Higley and James E. Reilly
August 18, 2003 – August 9, 2006 James E. Reilly
August 10, 2006 – October 4, 2006 Beth Milstein
October 5, 2006 – January 24, 2008 Hogan Sheffer and Meg Kelly
January 25 – April 22, 2008 None listed
April 23 – June 30, 2008 Dena Higley and Victor Gialanella
July 1 – October 10, 2008 Dena Higley and Rick Draughon
October 13, 2008 – June 13, 2011 Dena Higley and Christopher Whitesell
June 14 – August 25, 2011 Dena Higley
August 26, 2011 – August 16, 2012 Marlene Clark Poulter and Darrell Ray Thomas Jr.
August 17, 2012 – August 18, 2015 Gary Tomlin and Christopher Whitesell
August 19, 2015 – February 19, 2016 Josh Griffith and Dena Higley
February 22, 2016 – TBA 2016 Josh Griffith, Dena Higley, and Beth Milstein
TBA 2016 Dena Higley and Ryan Quan

Copied and pasted all that from Wikipedia. Sorry for the long post but I figured in light of the discussion it would be good to post the HW list. The show has always shown instability with the head writer position, which is rather interesting especially when you consider that happened in the 80's as well.

I think it was Y&R in 2012 after Jill Farren Phelps and Josh Griffith took over.

It’s that time of year again. Rumor has it that one of the core 4 soaps is about to experience some cast cuts from its bloated cast. No word on when/if this will occur, but I am sure it will get the Interwebs talking.

Keep it locked at The BUZZ when we learn more…
Didn't Voldy run this BI a few months ago? I think GH and Days are really the only two options here. Both Y&R and B&B keep pretty tight casts.

Days makes the most sense given the renewal, but...

They had this BI twice or even three times.

I know it looks like a lot of turnover in the 80's, but if you really look it's seven years of the same . . . writing tree, I guess.

It starts with Maggie DePriest and Sheri Anderson in 1982 and goes through the end of Leah Laiman's tenure in March of 1989 and it's a direct line of writers who had worked together. I'm not saying they were all the same, just that I think they all came from the same basic writing philosophy so there was a ton of continuity through those changes. I think that's why, despite the changes, the writing was really pretty consistently good during that era.

That's actually a good point.

I wish it was like that now where you had writers who learned under other writers or were on the writing team and got promoted getting these positions because you would get far more consistency. That is a big issue IMO. There is just too much turnover of cast, writers, producers, etc.

I'm torn. On one hand, I think I would be fine with Xander and Theresa pairing up to start trouble. On the other hand, Theresa falsely accused him of rape and he was sent to prison, so I would be okay with him getting out and getting revenge on her, while also interacting with Nicole. Xcole had decent chemistry. :)
I'd be happy to have Xander back purely to torment Theresa.

I'd also be happy to have Vargas back purely to torment Theresa.

I can't see Nicole forgiving Xander for trying to kill Eric.
I think she could. ;)

Nicole is very forgiving & knows what it's like to fuck up. She forgave EJ for the whole Fafe debacle which ended up resulting in her mother's death. Also, Eric was driving the car that hit Danny-boy, her twu wuv, so that could definitely change the dynamic.

I just asked Jonathon McClendon on Periscope if he'll go on Dishin Days, but he said that they want him to stay "lowkey" while this storyline unfolds. He thinks he'll be aloud to do interviews in a few weeks or something.
I hope that the reason he will be "allowed" to give interviews in a few weeks is because JCM and Chase are no longer on the show and it is his exit interview! Sorry, not sorry, but after his periscope crap I want him gone!
I wonder if that's exactly what the reason is

The new head writer just went and followed a bunch of fans on Twitter. Even some who have tweeted a bunch of anti-Higley stuff. :mutley:

Guesses on how long he lasts before he shuts down that account?
The fact he is doing that is interesting because stuff like that could easily get him in trouble or worse. He must feel he can do that if he is doing something like that, to that extent.

That almost makes me wonder if he feels as though his position is secure and her's is not or may be temporary. Given it looks like Josh quit to avoid working with Dena and Dena was already on a LOA and given the fact we have heard so many like Quan while Jason is hinting at something in his weekly thread, I do have to wonder if Dena is only a placeholder and she is going to be gone or will be gone in the near future. Just starting to get a feeling there is something more going on.
He worked for Mr. Ego himself for years. :D And he was his writing assistant, that's like lowest of the low position in the writing room. There is probably no one more qualified to work with Dena than him.
Mr. Ego?

Jonathon did another Periscope video (shocker, i know). In this one, someone asked him who his fave person to work with on Days was. His response was Vivian, since she's the main person he works with. But then added "Vivian, Olivia, and Daniel" to the end of his response.

Means we'll be getting Chase and Claire scenes. Creepy. I think Jonathon is done at Days and probably filmed his final scenes when DC filmed again.

Copied and pasted all that from Wikipedia. Sorry for the long post but I figured in light of the discussion it would be good to post the HW list.
All of those pre-1990 dates on the Wiki list were taken from my site and added to Wiki by others. However, the list isn't totally accurate in regards to some of the co-heads being listed, which is not the same as head writer. For instance, Whitesell was not the head writer with Dena from 2008-2011, he was in a secondary position.

Here's the list as per the scripts and credits, with Higley's start date adjusted to the beginning of the writers strike:

Writer(s)...........................................Start Date-End Date.........Episodes (Total)
Peggy Phillips & Kenneth Rosen...........11/8/65-12/31/65.............0001-0038 (38)

Wait, I'm a bit confused. You say Whitesell wasn't a HW but was in a "secondary position?" He was referred to as a co-head writer and credited when Tomlin came in as EP in October 2008 right up until he was fired in early 2011. That is no different than when he was credited as co-HW with Tomlin from 2012-2015. Not understanding that. You have Dena listed as by herself from 2008-2011 and the credits, mags, and such indicated otherwise. I even think your site used to indicate otherwise too, Jason. What am I missing?
